What it is

sec-Butylamine at a glance

sec-Butylamine, also written as butan-2-amine or 2-aminobutane, is a clear, colourless, flammable liquid that boils at about 63 °C, mixes with water in all proportions and carries the ammoniacal odour of the lower alkyl amines. CAS 13952-84-6 refers to the racemic material, which is what commercial supply normally means.

Its defining feature is the stereocentre. The carbon holding the nitrogen carries a methyl group, an ethyl group, a hydrogen and the amine, so the molecule exists as two enantiomers. Where a downstream active is itself chiral, that matters a great deal: the racemic amine gives a mixture of diastereomers, and a resolved enantiomer may be needed instead. This is normally decided long before purchasing, but it is worth confirming on the enquiry.

In use it is best known in crop protection. sec-Butylamine has a long history as a post-harvest fungicide for citrus and other stored produce, and it supplies the sec-butylamino group in triazine herbicides such as secbumeton and in several sulfonylurea and urea actives. Pharmaceutical and specialty chemical users take it for the same reason: a compact chiral primary amine that is easy to acylate.

It is manufactured by reductive amination of methyl ethyl ketone with ammonia and hydrogen over a supported metal catalyst, or by amination of sec-butanol. Both routes produce di-sec-butylamine alongside the primary amine, and traces of the ketone can survive into the product, so both are controlled in the specification.

Why buyers choose sec-butylamine

  • A compact chiral building block. The stereocentre sits directly on the amine carbon, where it influences the whole downstream molecule.
  • Proven in crop protection. A long record as a post-harvest fungicide and as the amine in triazine and urea herbicide chemistry.
  • Reactive despite the branch. The nitrogen is hindered less than in a secondary or tertiary amine, so acylation and alkylation run cleanly.
  • Controlled impurity profile. Di-sec-butylamine, methyl ethyl ketone, other butylamine isomers, ammonia and water are all specified.

Chemistry and reactivity

How sec-butylamine behaves in a reaction

sec-Butylamine behaves as a moderately hindered primary amine: reactive enough for routine acylation and substitution, bulky enough to give the selectivity that many actives depend on, and chiral, which becomes the dominant consideration once the downstream molecule is itself chiral.

Triazine substitution

Displaces chloride on cyanuric chloride derivatives to install the sec-butylamino group of secbumeton and related triazine herbicides.

Ar–Cl + sBuNH₂ → Ar–NHsBu

Amide formation

Reacts with acid chlorides, anhydrides and esters to give N-sec-butyl amides used in pharmaceutical and agrochemical synthesis.

RCOCl + sBuNH₂ → amide

Sulfonamide and sulfonylurea chemistry

Gives N-sec-butyl sulfonamides and feeds sulfonylurea herbicide and drug intermediates.

RSO₂Cl + sBuNH₂ → sulfonamide

Urea and carbamate chemistry

Adds across isocyanates to give substituted ureas, several of which are crop-protection actives in their own right.

RNCO + sBuNH₂ → urea

Fungicidal salt formation

Neutralises organic and mineral acids to give sec-butylammonium salts, the form used in post-harvest treatment of stored produce.

acid + sBuNH₂ → salt

Reductive amination

Condenses with aldehydes and ketones and is reduced in situ to secondary amines carrying a chiral centre next to nitrogen.

R₂C=O + sBuNH₂ → amine

Chiral resolution

Used as a resolving agent and as a chiral auxiliary, where its stereocentre separates a racemic acid into diastereomeric salts.

racemic acid + sBuNH₂ → salts

Acid scavenging

With a conjugate acid pKa near 10.6 it holds pH steady during a reaction and is easy to remove afterwards.

pKa ≈ 10.6 at 25 °C

Process notes. Additions are exothermic and the amine boils at about 63 °C, so dose under control with reflux or cooling rather than heating a closed vessel. Where stereochemistry matters, confirm at the enquiry stage whether the racemate is acceptable, because resolving it afterwards is far more expensive than specifying it up front. Excess amine strips cleanly under vacuum.

How it is made

From methyl ethyl ketone and ammonia to a finished drum

sec-Butylamine is made by catalytic amination, and the route sets the impurity profile: di-sec-butylamine from over-reaction, and residual methyl ethyl ketone or sec-butanol from incomplete conversion.

Stage 1

Feedstock

Methyl ethyl ketone, or sec-butanol on the alcohol route, is mixed with a large excess of ammonia, with hydrogen fed in for the reductive route.

Stage 2

Catalytic amination

The mixture passes over a supported nickel, cobalt or copper catalyst at elevated temperature and pressure, producing the racemic amine.

Stage 3

Mixed amines

The reactor delivers sec-butylamine with di-sec-butylamine, water, unreacted ammonia and traces of unconverted ketone or alcohol.

Stage 4

Separation

Ammonia is recovered and recycled, and distillation separates the primary amine from the secondary amine and heavier fractions, with off-spec cuts returned to the reactor.

Stage 5

Finishing

Product is dried, tested for assay, isomers, ketone, water and colour, then filled under nitrogen into carboys, drums, totes or bulk containers.

Why the impurity profile matters

Di-sec-butylamine is the principal by-product and a strongly hindered secondary amine, so it neither reacts like the product nor separates easily from some reaction mixtures. Residual methyl ethyl ketone is the other name to watch, because it condenses with the amine to give an imine that shows up as colour and can consume reagent in a downstream coupling.

The other butylamine isomers can also carry through at low levels where a plant makes more than one. Where a registration dossier or a validated process names limits, send them with the enquiry and we will match the batch rather than send the standard commercial cut.

Storage life and colour

Twelve months in sealed original packing, kept cool and out of sunlight, is the normal working figure, with a re-check of assay, water and colour before a critical batch from older stock. Carbon dioxide pickup and residual ketone are the two usual causes of a rising APHA number.

Keep drums closed between draws, blanket tanks with nitrogen where you can, and keep packs away from heat and sunlight. A retained sample of every batch is held here so a later query can be settled against the original material.

Know the difference

sec-Butylamine against the other butylamines

Four isomers share the formula C₄H₁₁N, and only one of them is chiral. That single difference decides whether a downstream active is a clean single compound or a mixture of diastereomers, so this is not a family where substitution is safe.

Handling, storage and safety

Flammable, corrosive and worth respecting

sec-Butylamine is a highly flammable, corrosive base with a flash point around −20 °C, and in several countries its use as a post-harvest treatment is separately regulated. The notes below are a summary for planning only — work to the Safety Data Sheet supplied with your consignment and to your own site risk assessment.

Storage

  • Cool, dry, well-ventilated store away from direct sun, heat and every ignition source.
  • Keep containers tightly closed; nitrogen blanketing is preferred for tanks and part-used drums.
  • Segregate from acids, oxidising agents, halogens, hypochlorites and isocyanates.
  • Bund the area, earth the racking, and keep a spill kit with absorbent and neutralising material nearby.

Materials of construction

  • Stainless steel, carbon steel, HDPE and PTFE are generally suitable.
  • Avoid copper, copper alloys, brass, bronze, zinc and galvanised surfaces — amines attack them.
  • Use gaskets and seals rated for amines; PTFE and some fluoroelastomers work, natural rubber does not.
  • Earth and bond equipment during every transfer, because the vapour is flammable and heavier than air.

Personal protection

  • Chemical splash goggles and a face shield when decanting, sampling or connecting hoses.
  • Chemical-resistant gloves, apron or suit and closed footwear.
  • Local exhaust ventilation at the transfer point; respiratory protection where vapour may build up.
  • Eyewash and safety shower within ten seconds' reach of the handling point.

Testing

What we check, and how

The numbers on a Certificate of Analysis are only useful if you know how they were produced. These are the methods behind the figures on ours, and the checks worth repeating at your own goods-inward.

Gas chromatography

Separates sec-butylamine from its isomers, homologues and residual ammonia in one run, and gives both the assay and the impurity profile that matter to your reaction.

Acid–base titration

An independent check on total amine content, useful as a quick goods-inward confirmation before a drum is released to production.

Karl Fischer

Water determination, which matters wherever the next step is moisture sensitive or the amine feeds an anhydrous reaction.

APHA colour

A visual platinum–cobalt comparison. A rising colour value is the earliest sign that a pack has been exposed to air or held too long.

Density and refractive index

Fast confirmation of identity and strength, and a simple way to spot a wrong pack or a contaminated drum.

Non-volatile matter and iron

Gravimetric residue and trace metal checks, which matter for catalytic steps and for any product going into a regulated formulation.

Retained samples

A sample from every dispatched batch is held here, so a query months later can be settled against the original material rather than an argument.

Batch traceability

The batch number on the label ties back to the COA, the test record and the supply lot, which is what your auditor will ask to see.

Third-party testing

Where your customer or regulator needs an independent result, we can arrange analysis at a NABL-accredited laboratory before dispatch.

Why buy from us

What you get besides the chemical

sec-butylamine is a line on a price list and a headache in a warehouse. What separates suppliers is the grade flexibility, the paperwork and the answer you get when something is not routine.

One source for the whole amine list

sec-Butylamine sits alongside the rest of our amine range, from ethanolamines to fatty amines. Your purchase team raises one enquiry, compares one quote and manages one vendor record instead of six.

Grades, not just the standard cut

Commercial, LR and AR material is available, so you are not forced to redesign a step around the only grade your supplier happens to carry.

Paperwork that clears first time

COA, SDS, correct HSN and HS codes, dangerous goods declarations and certificates of origin are prepared with the consignment, not chased afterwards by your logistics team.

Specification matching

Tell us your limits on isomers, water, ammonia or colour and we quote against them, rather than sending the standard cut and letting your QC department find out.

Scheduled repeat supply

Once we know your monthly draw we hold and release material on a schedule, so you carry less inventory of a flammable, corrosive product than you otherwise would.

Someone who knows the chemistry

Describe the reaction rather than the product code and we will tell you which grade fits — and say so plainly when a different amine would serve you better.

Buying guide

How to write an enquiry that gets a firm price

Most delays in quoting sec-butylamine come from a missing line in the enquiry, not from availability. Send these details and a firm price usually comes back the same day.

Include in your enquiry

  • Full name and CAS. sec-Butylamine, CAS 13952-84-6 — never just the initials.
  • Grade. Commercial, LR or AR, plus any tighter limit your process needs.
  • Quantity and frequency. Trial pack, monthly offtake or an annual contract.
  • Pack size. Carboy, drum, IBC or bulk, and whether packs are returnable.
  • Destination. Delivery address for road, or port and Incoterm for export.
  • Key limits. Water, colour, isomer or ammonia limits your step is sensitive to.
  • Documents. Anything beyond COA and SDS that your site or customs needs.
  • Application. One line on the reaction helps us confirm the right grade.

Mistakes that cost money

  • Not saying whether the racemate is acceptable. Where the downstream molecule is chiral, this decides the whole process.
  • Ignoring the isomer. Two quotes at the same price can carry very different isomer and homologue content.
  • Using brass or copper fittings. Amines attack copper alloys; the pump fails, not the chemical.
  • Storing part-used drums open. Air and carbon dioxide raise colour and form carbamate solids.
  • Heating a sealed container. The low boiling point means pressure builds far faster than operators expect.
  • Leaving out the end use. Dangerous goods and monitored chemicals cannot ship without it, so the order simply stops.
  • Ordering at the last minute. DG bookings, packaging and permits take longer than ordinary freight.
  • Skipping the sample. A 25 litre trial pack costs far less than a failed production batch.

Not sure of some of it yet? Send what you have. A description of the reaction step and an approximate monthly volume is enough for us to come back with a recommended grade, a pack plan and an indicative price.

Glossary

Terms used on this page

Plain definitions of the words that appear on a sec-butylamine specification, label and shipping document.

Assay
The measured amount of the amine in the material, given as a percentage by weight or by GC area.
Anhydrous
Without water. Most alkyl amines are supplied neat, so water is controlled by Karl Fischer rather than by dilution.
APHA colour
A platinum-cobalt scale for how colourless a liquid is. Lower is better, and a rising number is the first sign of air exposure.
Primary amine
A nitrogen carrying one carbon group and two hydrogens, which leaves two N-H bonds free to react.
COA
Certificate of Analysis - the tested results for the specific batch you received.
SDS
Safety Data Sheet - hazards, handling, storage, spill response, first aid and disposal.
HSN and HS code
Tariff classification. HSN 2921 19 is used on Indian invoices for acyclic monoamines; the matching HS code appears on export papers.
IBC
Intermediate bulk container - the caged 1000 litre tote moved by forklift.
UN number
The four-digit transport identifier that fixes the label, packaging and segregation rules.
Packing group
The degree of transport danger within a hazard class. Group I is high, II medium and III low danger.
LR and AR grade
Laboratory reagent and analytical reagent - tighter impurity limits for laboratory and analytical work.
Karl Fischer
The standard titration for measuring water content in a chemical.
pKa
A measure of acid strength. For an amine it is quoted for the conjugate acid; a higher value means a stronger base.
Reductive amination
Making a larger amine from a carbonyl compound by forming an imine and reducing it in the same pot.
Acid scavenger
A base added to neutralise acid released during a reaction so the pH stays workable.
Flash point
The lowest temperature at which the liquid gives off enough vapour to ignite. Below room temperature means flammable-liquid controls apply.
Questions buyers ask

sec-Butylamine FAQ

Short answers to what purchase, plant and QC teams ask us most about this product. Anything else, ask us directly.

What is sec-butylamine used for?
Its best known use is in crop protection: as a post-harvest fungicidal treatment for citrus and stored produce in countries that permit it, and as the source of the sec-butylamino group in triazine herbicides such as secbumeton and in sulfonylurea and urea actives. It is also used for pharmaceutical intermediates, as a chiral auxiliary and resolving agent, and in rubber chemicals, corrosion inhibitors and surfactants.
Is sec-butylamine chiral, and which form do you supply?
Yes. The carbon carrying the nitrogen has four different substituents, so the molecule exists as (R)- and (S)-enantiomers. Commercial material under CAS 13952-84-6 is the racemate, and that is what we supply by default. Resolved (R)- or (S)-sec-butylamine can be quoted separately, with a longer lead time and a higher price, so tell us at enquiry stage which you need.
How is sec-butylamine different from n-butylamine and isobutylamine?
All three are primary amines with the formula C₄H₁₁N. In sec-butylamine the nitrogen sits on the second carbon, making the molecule chiral and the nitrogen more hindered; n-butylamine is the straight chain and the most reactive; isobutylamine is branched but keeps the nitrogen on a terminal carbon. Boiling points and derivative behaviour differ, so they are not interchangeable.
How pure is your sec-butylamine, and what is controlled?
Commercial grade is typically 99.0% and above by GC, with di-sec-butylamine at 0.5% maximum, other butylamine isomers at 0.3% maximum in total, residual methyl ethyl ketone at 0.1% maximum, free ammonia at 0.2% maximum, water at 0.5% maximum by Karl Fischer and APHA colour of 15 or less. LR and AR grades carry tighter limits.
Which pack sizes are available?
25 litre HDPE carboys for trials and laboratory work, 160 kg MS or HDPE drums as the standard production pack, 1000 litre IBC totes for regular consumers, and bulk or ISO tank loads for larger campaigns.
How should sec-butylamine be stored and handled?
Store cool, dry, ventilated and bunded, away from sunlight, heat and ignition sources, with containers closed and preferably nitrogen blanketed, and segregated from acids, oxidisers, halogens and hypochlorites. Use stainless steel, carbon steel or HDPE with PTFE seals and avoid copper, brass, zinc and galvanised surfaces. Handle with splash goggles, chemical-resistant gloves and an apron, with local exhaust ventilation, an eyewash and a safety shower nearby.
Is sec-butylamine hazardous to transport?
Yes. It ships under UN 2733 as a Class 3 flammable liquid with a subsidiary Class 8 corrosive risk, packing group II, with the technical name shown alongside the proper shipping name. Export consignments move in UN-specification packaging with the dangerous goods declaration prepared with the shipment.
Do I need a pesticide registration to buy it?
If the material is going into a pesticidal use, then national registration, labelling and residue rules apply and they sit with the user or the formulator, not with the supplier of the raw material. For synthesis and intermediate use no pesticide registration is involved, but we still ask for a signed end-use declaration before the first shipment.
What is the HS code for sec-butylamine?
It falls under harmonised heading 2921 19, covering acyclic monoamines and their derivatives. That heading is the basis for national codes worldwide and appears as HSN 2921 19 on Indian invoices. The destination country's full code is stated on the export documents.
What documents come with an order?
A batch-wise Certificate of Analysis, the Safety Data Sheet, HSN details on the invoice, and labels showing net weight, batch number, manufacturing date and UN number. Export orders also carry the commercial invoice, packing list, certificate of origin, dangerous goods declaration and bill of lading.
Do you supply trial quantities?
Yes. A 25 litre carboy or a smaller laboratory pack can be arranged so your team can qualify the material before a production order. Request a sample with your application and specification details.
What is the shelf life of sec-butylamine?
Twelve months in sealed original packing kept cool and out of sunlight is the normal working figure. Carbon dioxide pickup and residual ketone raise the APHA colour over time, so keep drums closed between draws and re-check assay, water and colour before a critical batch.
Which materials can I use for pumps, pipework and storage?
Stainless steel, carbon steel and HDPE with PTFE gaskets and seals. Avoid copper, brass, bronze, zinc and galvanised surfaces because amines attack copper alloys. Earth and bond equipment during transfer, because the vapour is flammable at ambient temperature.
Can you supply against our own specification?
Yes. Send the parameters that matter — typically assay, di-sec-butylamine, other isomers, ketone, ammonia, water and colour, plus any enantiomeric requirement — and we will confirm whether we can meet them from stock or need to select or source a batch.
Which countries do you supply sec-butylamine to?
We ship worldwide, with regular destinations across the Middle East and Africa, South and South East Asia, East Asia, Australia and New Zealand, Europe and the CIS, and North and South America, alongside domestic supply throughout India. Shipments move through Nhava Sheva and Mundra on EXW, FOB, CFR, CIF or DAP terms, subject to the destination country's rules on pesticidal uses.
What is the minimum order quantity and the usual lead time?
A single 25 litre carboy is enough for trial and qualification work, while production orders move in drums, totes or container loads. Ex-stock domestic dispatches typically leave within a few working days of confirmation; export, resolved-enantiomer and made-to-specification campaigns take longer.
Which Indian states do you deliver to?
