What it is

N,N-Diethylethanolamine at a glance

N,N-Diethylethanolamine, usually shortened to DEEA and also called DEAE or 2-(diethylamino)ethanol, is a tertiary amine with two ethyl groups and one hydroxyethyl group on the nitrogen. It is a strong base, miscible with water and most organic solvents.

It is a clear, colourless to pale yellow liquid with an amine odour, boiling at about 161 °C and staying liquid far below normal temperatures. Its flash point is about 50 °C, so DEEA is both corrosive and flammable — it ships as Class 8 with a Class 3 subsidiary risk.

DEEA is made by reacting ethylene oxide with diethylamine and purifying by distillation. It is a controlled chemical in several export-control regimes, so supply is business to business against a stated industrial end use — routine for a properly documented supplier.

Why buyers choose N,N-diethylethanolamine

  • Diethylaminoethyl building block. Its hydroxyl forms esters and ethers that carry a diethylaminoethyl group into drugs and monomers.
  • Neutralising amine for steam. Volatile enough to travel with steam and raise condensate pH.
  • Strong, soluble base. Neutralises acids and scavenges HCl without forming amides.
  • Liquid at all normal temperatures. No heated storage needed.

Chemistry and reactivity

How N,N-diethylethanolamine behaves in a formulation or reaction

A tertiary nitrogen and a free hydroxyl explain what DEEA is used for: carrying a diethylaminoethyl group into a molecule, neutralising acids and raising condensate pH, without reacting at the nitrogen.

Esterification

The hydroxyl reacts with acid chlorides and esters to give diethylaminoethyl esters — the structural motif of several local anaesthetics and other drugs.

RCOCl + DEEA → RCOOCH₂CH₂N(C₂H₅)₂

Transesterification to monomers

Reacts with methyl methacrylate to give diethylaminoethyl methacrylate (DEAEMA), used in cationic and pH-responsive polymers.

MMA + DEEA → DEAEMA + MeOH

Neutralising amine

Distils with steam and neutralises carbonic acid in condensate, reducing corrosion in steam lines.

R₃N + H₂CO₃ → R₃NH⁺ HCO₃⁻

Quaternisation

The nitrogen reacts with alkylating agents to give quaternary ammonium compounds for softeners and antistatic agents.

R₃N + R′X → R₃N⁺R′ X⁻

Acid scavenging

Mops up acids generated in reactions without forming amides.

R₃N + HCl → R₃NH⁺Cl⁻

Resin neutralisation

Neutralises acid-functional binders in waterborne coatings, with lower volatility than DMEA.

binder–COOH + DEEA → salt

Etherification

The chloride derivative attaches a diethylaminoethyl group to oxygen or nitrogen in pharmaceutical synthesis.

R–OH + DEAE-Cl → R–OCH₂CH₂NEt₂

Emulsifier and softener intermediates

Ester and amide derivatives are quaternised into textile softeners and emulsifiers.

ester + quaternisation → softener

Process notes. DEEA is flammable as well as corrosive: earth and bond equipment, keep ignition sources away and use flammable-liquid storage. Esterification and quaternisation are exothermic. Keep drums closed to avoid moisture and CO₂ pick-up.

Discuss your process
How it is made

From ethylene oxide and diethylamine to a finished drum

Practically all commercial DEEA comes from the same route. Knowing how it is made explains why the specification controls water, colour and related amines.

Stage 1

Feedstock

Ethylene oxide is fed into diethylamine, with a slight excess of amine.

Stage 2

Reaction

The exothermic reaction runs under pressure and controlled temperature.

Stage 3

Crude product

The reactor delivers DEEA with small amounts of higher ethoxylates, unreacted diethylamine and water.

Stage 4

Separation

Diethylamine is recovered and recycled, and distillation purifies the DEEA.

Stage 5

Finishing

DEEA is tested for purity, water and colour, then filled into UN drums, totes or tankers under nitrogen.

Why the impurity profile matters

The real quality question is "what else came with it". Water interferes with acid chloride and transesterification steps; residual diethylamine is a secondary amine that can form amides or nitrosamines; higher ethoxylates change reactivity.

For pharmaceutical synthesis, tighter limits on water, diethylamine and colour are common. If your step is sensitive, say so at enquiry stage and we will quote against your specification.

Storage life and colour

In sealed original packing, stored cool and away from heat and ignition sources, DEEA is normally used within twelve months, and we recommend a re-check of assay, water and colour after that before a critical batch.

Keep drums closed between draws and blanket bulk tanks with nitrogen. A retained sample of each batch is held here, so any query can be tested against the original.

Choosing the right grade

DEEA or DMEA?

DEEA and DMEA are close neighbours. The ethyl groups on DEEA make it heavier, slightly less volatile and the right choice when your target molecule needs a diethylaminoethyl group.

Pick DEEA if…

  • Your target molecule carries a diethylaminoethyl group.
  • You treat steam condensate with a neutralising amine.
  • You make DEAEMA or diethylaminoethyl esters.
  • You want a slightly less volatile tertiary amine.

Pick DMEA if…

  • You need the amine to leave a paint film quickly.
  • You need a polyurethane catalyst.
  • You make DMAEA or DMAEMA flocculant monomers.
  • Your target molecule carries a dimethylaminoethyl group.
Know the difference

NMEA, DMEA and DEEA

The alkylethanolamines are made by adding ethylene oxide to methylamine, dimethylamine or diethylamine instead of ammonia. The alkyl groups on the nitrogen change basicity, volatility, flammability and what the amine can still react with.

What we check, and how

The numbers on a Certificate of Analysis are only useful if you know how they were produced. These are the methods behind the figures on ours, and the checks worth repeating at your own goods-inward.

Gas chromatography

Separates N,N-diethylethanolamine from the related amines made in the same reactor, and gives the assay and impurity profile that matter most to your formulation.

Acid–base titration

An independent check on total amine content, useful as a quick goods-inward confirmation before a drum is released to production.

Karl Fischer

Water determination, which matters for anhydrous grades and confirms strength on aqueous grades.

APHA colour

A visual platinum–cobalt comparison. A rising colour value is the earliest sign that a pack has been exposed to air, heat or held too long.

Density and refractive index

Fast confirmation that the material is what the label says, and a simple way to spot dilution or the wrong pack.

Distillation range

Confirms the boiling range is tight around 161 °C, which flags light or heavy contaminants before a drum is released.

Retained samples

A sample from every dispatched batch is held here, so a query months later can be settled against the original material rather than an argument.

Batch traceability

Batch number on the label ties back to the COA, the test record and the supply lot, which is what your auditor will ask to see.

Third-party testing

Where your customer or regulator needs an independent result, we can arrange analysis at a NABL-accredited laboratory before dispatch.

Why buy from us

What you get besides the chemical

N,N-Diethylethanolamine is a commodity on a price list. What separates suppliers is grade flexibility, the paperwork and the answer you get when something is not routine.

One source for the whole amine list

N,N-Diethylethanolamine sits alongside more than fifty other amines we stock, from ethanolamines to fatty amines. Your purchase team raises one enquiry, compares one quote and manages one vendor record instead of six.

The grade you need, not just the easy one

Different purities and supply forms of N,N-diethylethanolamine are available, so you are not forced to redesign a formulation around the only grade your supplier happens to carry.

Paperwork that clears first time

COA, SDS, correct HSN and HS codes, transport declarations and certificates of origin are prepared with the consignment, not chased afterwards by your logistics team.

Specification matching

Tell us your limits on purity, related amines, water or colour and we quote against them, rather than sending the standard cut and letting your QC department find out.

Scheduled repeat supply

Once we know your monthly draw we hold and release material on a schedule, so you carry less inventory than you otherwise would.

Someone who knows the chemistry

Describe the application rather than the product code and we will tell you which grade fits — and say so plainly when a different amine would serve you better.

How to write an enquiry that gets a firm price

Most delays in quoting N,N-diethylethanolamine come from a missing line in the enquiry, not from availability. Send these eight details and a firm price usually comes back the same day.

Include in your enquiry

  • Full name and CAS. N,N-Diethylethanolamine, CAS 100-37-8 — never just the initials.
  • Grade. Commercial ≥ 99.5%, high-purity pharma grade, or LR / AR.
  • Quantity and basis. State whether the tonnage is on product weight or on 100% active basis.
  • Specification limits. Any tighter limit on related amines, water or colour your process needs.
  • Pack size. UN drum, IBC or ISO tank.
  • Destination. Delivery address for road, or port and Incoterm for export.
  • Documents. Anything beyond COA and SDS that your site, customer or customs needs.
  • Frequency. One-off trial, monthly offtake or an annual contract.

Mistakes that cost money

  • Writing just "DEEA" or "DEAE". Write the full name and CAS; similar initials cover different amines.
  • Confusing DEEA with DEA. Diethanolamine is a different, non-flammable secondary amine.
  • Ignoring the flash point. DEEA is flammable; store and transfer it as a flammable liquid.
  • Ignoring water content. Water interferes with esterification and acid chloride steps.
  • Using brass or copper fittings. Amines attack copper alloys.
  • Leaving out the end use. DEEA is export-controlled; the order cannot ship without it.
  • Storing part-used drums open. Moisture and CO₂ pick-up change assay and colour.
  • Ordering at the last minute. Licences and dangerous goods bookings take time.

Not sure of some of it yet? Send what you have. A description of the application and an approximate monthly volume is enough for us to come back with a recommended grade, a pack plan and an indicative price.

Questions buyers ask

N,N-Diethylethanolamine FAQ

Short answers to what purchase, plant and QC teams ask us most about this product. Anything else, ask us directly.

What is N,N-diethylethanolamine used for?
Mainly as a building block for pharmaceuticals that carry a diethylaminoethyl group, as a neutralising amine for steam condensate, and as the raw material for diethylaminoethyl methacrylate and quaternary textile softeners. It is also used in coatings, emulsifiers, corrosion inhibitors and specialty chemicals.
Is DEEA the same as DEAE?
Yes. DEEA, DEAE, diethylaminoethanol and 2-(diethylamino)ethanol are names for the same compound, CAS 100-37-8. It should not be confused with diethanolamine (DEA) or diethylamine.
Which grades of DEEA do you supply?
A commercial grade of 99.5% minimum, a high-purity grade for pharmaceutical intermediates, and LR and AR laboratory grades. Tell us your application and we will confirm the right one.
How pure is your N,N-diethylethanolamine?
Commercial grade is typically 99.5% minimum by GC, with diethylamine at 0.1% maximum, water at 0.2% maximum and APHA colour of 15 or less. Tighter limits can be quoted against your specification.
Is DEEA a controlled chemical?
N,N-Diethylethanolamine appears on chemical export-control lists in several jurisdictions. We therefore supply it business to business only, against verified company registration, consignee details and a signed end-use declaration, plus any licence the destination country requires.
How should DEEA be stored and handled?
Store in a cool, ventilated flammable-liquid area with containers closed and bulk tanks nitrogen blanketed, away from acids, oxidisers and nitrites. Use stainless or carbon steel and avoid copper, brass, zinc, galvanised surfaces and aluminium. Handle with splash goggles, a face shield, chemical-resistant gloves and flame-retardant clothing, with an eyewash and safety shower nearby.
Is DEEA hazardous to transport?
Yes. It ships under UN 2686, 2-Diethylaminoethanol, Class 8 with a Class 3 subsidiary risk, Packing Group II. Packs carry corrosion and flame pictograms, and export consignments go in UN-specification packaging with a dangerous goods declaration.
Which pack sizes are available?
N,N-Diethylethanolamine is supplied in about 170 kg UN-approved steel drums, IBC totes of about 850 kg and ISO tanks on request. Laboratory grades are available from 500 mL to 25 L.
What is the HS code for N,N-diethylethanolamine?
N,N-Diethylethanolamine is classified under harmonised heading 2922 19, the heading for other amino-alcohols and their salts. The same heading is the basis for national codes worldwide and appears as HSN 2922 19 on Indian invoices. Your country's full eight or ten digit code is stated on the export documents so customs clearance is not held up.
What documents come with an order?
Every dispatch carries a batch-wise Certificate of Analysis, the Safety Data Sheet, HSN details on the invoice, and labels showing the grade, net weight, batch number, manufacturing date and any transport hazard marking. Export orders also carry the shipping documentation for the destination.
Do you supply trial quantities of N,N-diethylethanolamine?
Yes. A single drum or a small laboratory pack can be arranged so your team can qualify the material before placing a regular order. Request a sample with your application details.
Which countries do you supply N,N-diethylethanolamine to?
We ship worldwide. Regular destinations include the Middle East and Africa, South and South East Asia, East Asia, Australia and New Zealand, Europe and the CIS, and North and South America, alongside domestic supply throughout India. Shipments move in container loads through Nhava Sheva and Mundra, and we quote on EXW, FOB, CFR, CIF or DAP terms. Send the grade, quantity and destination port and we will confirm lead time, freight and documentation.
What export documents do you provide?
A commercial invoice, packing list, certificate of origin, batch-wise Certificate of Analysis, Safety Data Sheet, any dangerous goods or non-hazardous transport declaration, and the bill of lading or airway bill. Country-specific declarations such as REACH, non-GMO or allergen statements can be issued on request — tell us what your customs broker needs at enquiry stage.
What is the minimum order quantity and the usual lead time?
A single drum is enough to start for trial and qualification work; production orders normally move in drums, IBC totes or container loads. Ex-stock domestic dispatches typically leave within a few working days of order confirmation, and export or made-to-specification orders need longer depending on packing, documentation and shipping schedules. We confirm the lead time on the quotation.
