What it is

Aminoethylethanolamine at a glance

Aminoethylethanolamine, usually shortened to AEEA and also called HEEDA, N-(2-hydroxyethyl)ethylenediamine or 2-[(2-aminoethyl)amino]ethanol, carries a primary amine, a secondary amine and a primary hydroxyl on a short chain. That makes it more reactive and more versatile than either an ethanolamine or a simple ethyleneamine.

It is a clear, colourless to pale yellow, viscous, hygroscopic liquid with a mild ammoniacal odour, boiling at about 240 °C and miscible with water. It absorbs carbon dioxide and water from the air, so sealed packing and nitrogen blanketing help keep colour and assay stable.

AEEA is made industrially either by reacting ethylenediamine with ethylene oxide, or as a co-product of ethyleneamine manufacture from monoethanolamine and ammonia; it is purified by vacuum distillation. Piperazine-type by-products, especially hydroxyethylpiperazine, are the impurities that specifications control.

Why buyers choose aminoethylethanolamine

  • Imidazoline former. With fatty acids, AEEA cyclises to hydroxyethyl imidazolines — the basis of softeners and oilfield corrosion inhibitors.
  • Three reactive sites. Primary amine, secondary amine and hydroxyl give amides, imidazolines, chelants and resins.
  • Low volatility. Boiling around 240 °C keeps losses and odour low in hot reactions.
  • Chelant raw material. The route to HEDTA, a chelating agent for iron and other metals.

Chemistry and reactivity

How aminoethylethanolamine behaves in a formulation or reaction

Two different nitrogens and a hydroxyl explain what AEEA is used for: building imidazoline rings, amides and chelants, and curing resins. These are the jobs formulators and process chemists reach for it to do.

Imidazoline formation

Condenses with fatty acids first to an amide, then with further heating and water removal to a 1-hydroxyethyl-2-alkyl imidazoline.

RCOOH + AEEA → imidazoline + 2 H₂O

Amidoamine formation

At lower temperatures with fatty acids it stops at the amidoamine, an intermediate for softeners and asphalt emulsifiers.

RCOOH + AEEA → RCONHCH₂CH₂NHCH₂CH₂OH

Quaternisation

Imidazolines and amidoamines from AEEA are quaternised to make cationic fabric softeners and hair conditioners.

imidazoline + R′X → imidazolinium salt

Carboxymethylation to HEDTA

Reacts with formaldehyde and cyanide, or chloroacetic acid, to give hydroxyethylethylenediaminetriacetic acid, a chelating agent.

AEEA → HEDTA

Epoxy curing

The two amine nitrogens react with epoxy groups, so AEEA is used as or in epoxy hardeners and as a resin modifier.

R–NH₂ + epoxide → amino alcohol

Salt formation

Neutralises acids and forms salts used in lubricant and fuel additives.

RCOOH + AEEA → salt

Corrosion inhibition

Imidazoline and amidoamine derivatives film metal surfaces, protecting pipelines and equipment in oilfield and refinery systems.

imidazoline film on steel

Cyclisation by-products

Under harsh conditions AEEA can cyclise to hydroxyethylpiperazine — the reason specifications cap piperazine-type impurities.

AEEA → HEP + H₂O

Process notes. Imidazoline synthesis needs good water removal and temperature control to convert the amide fully to the ring. AEEA is corrosive and can cause skin sensitisation — keep skin contact to a minimum. Keep drums closed to avoid CO₂ pick-up, which forms carbamate and raises colour.

Discuss your process
How it is made

From ethylenediamine or ethanolamine to a finished drum

AEEA is made by two related routes. Both explain why the specification controls piperazine-type by-products, related ethyleneamines, water and colour.

Stage 1

Feedstock

Either ethylenediamine is reacted with ethylene oxide, or monoethanolamine is aminated with ammonia over a catalyst.

Stage 2

Reaction

The reaction runs under controlled temperature and pressure to favour AEEA over higher products.

Stage 3

Mixed products

The crude contains AEEA with ethyleneamines, hydroxyethylpiperazine and water.

Stage 4

Separation

A vacuum distillation train separates AEEA from lighter amines and heavier by-products.

Stage 5

Finishing

AEEA is tested for purity, piperazines, water and colour, then filled into drums or totes under nitrogen.

Why the impurity profile matters

The real quality question is "what else came with it". Hydroxyethylpiperazine and other cyclic amines do not form imidazolines properly, and water slows the cyclisation. Related ethyleneamines change the amine value and the product distribution in your reaction.

For softener and corrosion-inhibitor producers, a consistent amine value and low colour matter most. If your process is sensitive, say so at enquiry stage and we will match the batch.

Storage life and colour

In sealed original packing, stored cool and out of sunlight, AEEA is normally used within twelve months, and we recommend a re-check of assay and colour after that before a critical batch. Air and carbon dioxide ingress form carbamate and raise colour.

Keep drums closed between draws and blanket bulk tanks with dry nitrogen. A retained sample of each batch is held here, so any query can be tested against the original material.

Choosing the right grade

AEEA or a different amine for your imidazoline?

Imidazoline and amidoamine producers choose between AEEA and polyethyleneamines such as DETA. The choice decides whether the product carries a hydroxyethyl or an aminoethyl side chain.

Pick AEEA if…

  • You make hydroxyethyl imidazoline softeners or conditioners.
  • You want a hydroxyl for later ethoxylation or esterification.
  • You make HEDTA chelants.
  • Pale product colour matters.

Pick DETA if…

  • You need a free amine on the side chain.
  • You make bis-amide or polyamide corrosion inhibitors.
  • You formulate epoxy curing agents.
  • Your process already specifies an ethyleneamine.

AEEA, monoethanolamine and ethylenediamine

AEEA sits between two better-known products: it carries the hydroxyethyl group of an ethanolamine and the two nitrogens of an ethyleneamine. That combination is why it forms imidazolines so readily.

Handling, storage and safety

Corrosive, sensitising and worth respecting

Aminoethylethanolamine causes severe skin burns and eye damage, may cause an allergic skin reaction, and carries further health classifications listed on the SDS. The notes below are a summary for planning only — always work to the Safety Data Sheet supplied with your consignment and your own site risk assessment.

Storage

  • Cool, dry, ventilated store away from heat and direct sun.
  • Keep containers closed; nitrogen blanketing is preferred for bulk tanks.
  • Segregate from acids, oxidising agents and nitrites.
  • Bund the area and keep a spill kit with absorbent material nearby.

Materials of construction

  • Stainless steel and carbon steel are generally suitable; HDPE for drums.
  • Avoid copper, copper alloys, brass, zinc, galvanised surfaces and aluminium.
  • Use gaskets and seals rated for amines, such as PTFE.
  • Use closed transfer where possible to limit skin contact.

Personal protection

  • Chemical splash goggles and a face shield when decanting or sampling.
  • Chemical-resistant gloves, apron and closed footwear — avoid all skin contact.
  • Local exhaust ventilation where hot product or mists are handled.
  • Eyewash and safety shower within reach of the handling point.

What we need from a new buyer

  • Company registration and tax details — VAT, EIN, GST or the equivalent in your country.
  • Consignee and delivery-site details, with a named technical or purchase contact.
  • The application the material goes into, so we can match the grade.
  • Any import permit or registration the destination country requires.

Who we supply

  • Manufacturers, formulators and processors buying for industrial use.
  • Research institutions, universities and accredited testing laboratories.
  • Registered traders and distributors serving the same industrial base.
  • Supply is business to business only — we do not sell to individuals.

Documentation we can issue

  • Dangerous goods declaration where applicable, or a non-hazardous transport statement.
  • Certificate of origin and chamber-attested export documents.
  • REACH, non-GMO, allergen and animal-origin-free statements on request.
  • Country-specific declarations where your customs broker asks for them.

Because AEEA is a dangerous good with health classifications, export bookings need correct UN packaging, labelling and a dangerous goods declaration, and some destinations require importer registration or inventory listing such as REACH. Tell us the destination at enquiry stage and we will confirm what is needed before the shipment is booked.

Testing

What we check, and how

The numbers on a Certificate of Analysis are only useful if you know how they were produced. These are the methods behind the figures on ours, and the checks worth repeating at your own goods-inward.

Gas chromatography

Separates aminoethylethanolamine from the related amines made in the same reactor, and gives the assay and impurity profile that matter most to your formulation.

Acid–base titration

An independent check on total amine content, useful as a quick goods-inward confirmation before a drum is released to production.

Karl Fischer

Water determination, which matters for anhydrous grades and confirms strength on aqueous grades.

APHA colour

A visual platinum–cobalt comparison. A rising colour value is the earliest sign that a pack has been exposed to air, heat or held too long.

Density and refractive index

Fast confirmation that the material is what the label says, and a simple way to spot dilution or the wrong pack.

Amine value

Titration of total amine value confirms the active content that imidazoline and softener producers dose against.

Retained samples

A sample from every dispatched batch is held here, so a query months later can be settled against the original material rather than an argument.

Batch traceability

Batch number on the label ties back to the COA, the test record and the supply lot, which is what your auditor will ask to see.

Third-party testing

Where your customer or regulator needs an independent result, we can arrange analysis at a NABL-accredited laboratory before dispatch.

Why buy from us

What you get besides the chemical

Aminoethylethanolamine is a commodity on a price list. What separates suppliers is grade flexibility, the paperwork and the answer you get when something is not routine.

One source for the whole amine list

Aminoethylethanolamine sits alongside more than fifty other amines we stock, from ethanolamines to fatty amines. Your purchase team raises one enquiry, compares one quote and manages one vendor record instead of six.

The grade you need, not just the easy one

Different purities and supply forms of aminoethylethanolamine are available, so you are not forced to redesign a formulation around the only grade your supplier happens to carry.

Paperwork that clears first time

COA, SDS, correct HSN and HS codes, transport declarations and certificates of origin are prepared with the consignment, not chased afterwards by your logistics team.

Specification matching

Tell us your limits on purity, related amines, water or colour and we quote against them, rather than sending the standard cut and letting your QC department find out.

Scheduled repeat supply

Once we know your monthly draw we hold and release material on a schedule, so you carry less inventory than you otherwise would.

Someone who knows the chemistry

Describe the application rather than the product code and we will tell you which grade fits — and say so plainly when a different amine would serve you better.

How to write an enquiry that gets a firm price

Most delays in quoting aminoethylethanolamine come from a missing line in the enquiry, not from availability. Send these eight details and a firm price usually comes back the same day.

Include in your enquiry

  • Full name and CAS. Aminoethylethanolamine, CAS 111-41-1 — never just the initials.
  • Grade. Commercial ≥ 99%, low-colour, or LR / AR.
  • Quantity and basis. State whether the tonnage is on product weight or on 100% active basis.
  • Specification limits. Any tighter limit on related amines, water or colour your process needs.
  • Pack size. Drum, IBC, tanker or ISO tank.
  • Destination. Delivery address for road, or port and Incoterm for export.
  • Documents. Anything beyond COA and SDS that your site, customer or customs needs.
  • Frequency. One-off trial, monthly offtake or an annual contract.

Mistakes that cost money

  • Writing just "AEEA". Write the full name and CAS 111-41-1; HEEDA and similar names are used too.
  • Confusing AEEA with AEP or DETA. Aminoethylpiperazine and diethylenetriamine are different ethyleneamines.
  • Ignoring piperazine content. Cyclic by-products do not form imidazolines properly.
  • Skimping on water removal. Imidazoline ring closure needs water driven off.
  • Using brass or copper fittings. Amines attack copper alloys.
  • Allowing skin contact. AEEA is corrosive and can sensitise skin.
  • Storing part-used drums open. Air and CO₂ raise colour and form carbamate.
  • Ordering at the last minute. Dangerous goods bookings take longer than ordinary freight.

Not sure of some of it yet? Send what you have. A description of the application and an approximate monthly volume is enough for us to come back with a recommended grade, a pack plan and an indicative price.

Questions buyers ask

Aminoethylethanolamine FAQ

Short answers to what purchase, plant and QC teams ask us most about this product. Anything else, ask us directly.

What is aminoethylethanolamine used for?
Mainly to make hydroxyethyl imidazolines and amidoamines for fabric softeners, hair conditioners and oilfield corrosion inhibitors, and to make the chelating agent HEDTA. It is also used in lubricant and fuel additives, epoxy curing agents, resins, asphalt emulsifiers and fine-chemical intermediates.
Is AEEA the same as HEEDA?
Yes. AEEA, HEEDA, N-(2-hydroxyethyl)ethylenediamine and 2-[(2-aminoethyl)amino]ethanol are names for the same compound, CAS 111-41-1.
Which grades of AEEA do you supply?
A commercial grade of 99% minimum, a low-colour grade for personal care and pale softeners, and LR and AR laboratory grades. Tell us your application and we will confirm the right one.
How is an imidazoline made from AEEA?
AEEA is heated with a fatty acid. The first step forms an amidoamine and releases water; with further heating and water removal, the amide closes into a 1-hydroxyethyl-2-alkyl imidazoline ring. The imidazoline can then be quaternised to make cationic softeners.
How pure is your aminoethylethanolamine?
Commercial grade is typically 99.0% minimum by GC, with hydroxyethylpiperazine at 0.5% maximum, water at 0.5% maximum and APHA colour of 30 or less. Tighter limits can be quoted against your specification.
How should AEEA be stored and handled?
Store in a cool, dry, ventilated area with containers closed and bulk tanks nitrogen blanketed, away from acids, oxidisers and nitrites. Use stainless or carbon steel and avoid copper, brass, zinc, galvanised surfaces and aluminium. Avoid all skin contact: wear splash goggles, a face shield, chemical-resistant gloves and an apron, with an eyewash and safety shower nearby.
Is aminoethylethanolamine hazardous to transport?
AEEA is typically shipped as a Class 8 corrosive, for example under UN 3267, Corrosive liquid, basic, organic, n.o.s., Packing Group III. The SDS for your batch confirms the exact entry.
Which pack sizes are available?
Aminoethylethanolamine is supplied in about 200 kg HDPE or MS drums, 1000 kg IBC totes, road tankers and ISO tanks. Laboratory grades are available from 500 mL to 25 L.
What is the HS code for aminoethylethanolamine?
Aminoethylethanolamine is classified under harmonised heading 2922 19, the heading for other amino-alcohols and their salts. The same heading is the basis for national codes worldwide and appears as HSN 2922 19 on Indian invoices. Your country's full eight or ten digit code is stated on the export documents so customs clearance is not held up.
What documents come with an order?
Every dispatch carries a batch-wise Certificate of Analysis, the Safety Data Sheet, HSN details on the invoice, and labels showing the grade, net weight, batch number, manufacturing date and any transport hazard marking. Export orders also carry the shipping documentation for the destination.
Do you supply trial quantities of aminoethylethanolamine?
Yes. A single drum or a small laboratory pack can be arranged so your team can qualify the material before placing a regular order. Request a sample with your application details.
Which countries do you supply aminoethylethanolamine to?
We ship worldwide. Regular destinations include the Middle East and Africa, South and South East Asia, East Asia, Australia and New Zealand, Europe and the CIS, and North and South America, alongside domestic supply throughout India. Shipments move in container loads through Nhava Sheva and Mundra, and we quote on EXW, FOB, CFR, CIF or DAP terms. Send the grade, quantity and destination port and we will confirm lead time, freight and documentation.
What export documents do you provide?
A commercial invoice, packing list, certificate of origin, batch-wise Certificate of Analysis, Safety Data Sheet, any dangerous goods or non-hazardous transport declaration, and the bill of lading or airway bill. Country-specific declarations such as REACH, non-GMO or allergen statements can be issued on request — tell us what your customs broker needs at enquiry stage.
What is the minimum order quantity and the usual lead time?
A single drum is enough to start for trial and qualification work; production orders normally move in drums, IBC totes or container loads. Ex-stock domestic dispatches typically leave within a few working days of order confirmation, and export or made-to-specification orders need longer depending on packing, documentation and shipping schedules. We confirm the lead time on the quotation.
