2,4-Toluenediamine (TDA) supplier and exporter

2,4-Diaminotoluene · 4-methyl-1,3-phenylenediamine · MTD · Flakes and molten supply

2,4-Toluenediamine is a methylated aromatic diamine with its two amino groups meta to each other on a toluene ring. It sits at the head of the TDI chain — nitrate toluene, hydrogenate the dinitrotoluene, and you have TDA, which phosgenation turns into the toluene diisocyanate behind the world's flexible foam. Away from that chain it is an amine-functional polyol initiator, a dye and pigment intermediate, and a building block for the diethyl-substituted chain extenders used in fast polyurethane systems. It is also a category 1B carcinogen on the REACH Candidate List, supplied only against a confirmed end use. Chelora Amines supplies TDA in flake and molten form, with a batch-wise COA and SDS on every dispatch.

2,4-Diaminotoluene, CH₃C₆H₃(NH₂)₂ — an unsymmetrical aromatic diamine The two amino groups are not equivalent. One sits next to the methyl group and is sterically hindered by it; the other has an open neighbourhood. That difference in accessibility is what makes TDI reactive in two distinct stages, which in turn is what gives flexible foam formulators the processing latitude they rely on. Hydrogens on ring carbons are omitted from the drawing for clarity.

What it is

2,4-Toluenediamine at a glance

2,4-Toluenediamine — also written 2,4-diaminotoluene, 4-methyl-1,3-phenylenediamine or simply 2,4-TDA — is a toluene ring carrying amino groups at the 2 and 4 positions. It is a colourless to light tan crystalline solid, melting at about 99 °C, that darkens towards red-brown on exposure to air and light. Most industrial volume moves molten.

Its dominant role is as the intermediate between dinitrotoluene and toluene diisocyanate. Toluene is nitrated to dinitrotoluene, the dinitrotoluene is hydrogenated to toluenediamine, and the diamine is phosgenated to TDI — the isocyanate behind flexible slabstock and moulded foam. The second significant use is quite different: TDA is an initiator for amine-functional polyether polyols, where the aromatic ring carries straight through into rigid insulation foam and brings both reactivity and fire performance with it.

TDA carries a serious health classification. It is a category 1B carcinogen, a suspected mutagen and reproductive toxicant, acutely toxic and damaging to the liver on repeated exposure, and it is listed on the REACH Candidate List. It is also prohibited in cosmetic products in a number of jurisdictions. It is supplied here for industrial use under closed handling, with end-use and regulatory checks before an order is accepted.

What makes the 2,4-isomer specific

  • Two non-equivalent amines. The 2-position amine is crowded by the methyl group; the 4-position amine is not. The reactivity difference carries through into TDI.
  • Isomer ratio is a specification, not a detail. TDI plants run the 80/20 mixture; formulators of polyols, dyes and specialty intermediates usually want the isolated 2,4-isomer.
  • A ready polyol initiator. Four active hydrogens and an aromatic ring make TDA an efficient starter for rigid polyether polyols.
  • A platform for chain extenders. Alkylation of the ring gives the diethyl- and dimethylthio-substituted toluenediamines used as liquid curatives.

Chemistry and reactivity

How TDA behaves in a reaction

Two primary aromatic amines, strongly activating, on an unsymmetrical ring. Nearly everything TDA does commercially comes from one of the reactions below.

Phosgenation to TDI

Both amino groups are converted to isocyanate groups, giving toluene diisocyanate. This is the single largest consumer of TDA worldwide and the reason the 80/20 isomer mixture exists as a commercial grade.

TDA → TDI (–NH₂ → –NCO)

Alkoxylation to polyols

The four active hydrogens are propoxylated or ethoxylated to give an aromatic amine-initiated polyether polyol — autocatalytic, high in functionality and built for rigid foam.

TDA + n PO → aromatic polyol

Diazotisation and coupling

Both amines diazotise and couple, giving bis-azo dyes and pigment intermediates. TDA chemistry sits behind several classical direct and sulphur dye families.

2 × ArNH₂ → bis-diazonium

Epoxy curing

Each N–H adds across an epoxide ring, so one TDA molecule ties four chains together at an AHEW of about 30.5 — a very low mix ratio and a hard, high-temperature network.

AHEW ≈ 30.5 · 4 active H

Ring alkylation

Alkylating the positions flanking the amines gives hindered diamines — the diethyl and dimethylthio toluenediamines sold as liquid chain extenders for polyurethane and polyurea.

TDA → DETDA, DMTDA

Amide and polyamide formation

Condensation with dicarboxylic acids or acid chlorides gives aromatic polyamides and polyamide-imides where thermal stability is the design requirement.

H₂N–Ar–NH₂ + diacid → polyamide

Urea and urethane formation

Reacts directly with isocyanates to give substituted ureas, which is both the basis of its use as a chain extender and the reason moisture and amine control matter in TDI plants.

R–NCO + H₂N–Ar → urea

Oxidation and colour

Oxidises readily in air and light, moving from near-colourless to red-brown. Colour has limited effect on reactivity but carries into pale products, so packs are sealed and nitrogen-blanketed.

air + light → darkening

Tell us the isomer you need. The isolated 2,4-isomer and the 80/20 2,4 / 2,6 mixture are different products with different prices, different handling and different downstream behaviour. Specify which your process requires at enquiry stage, along with the 2,6 limit if you are buying the pure isomer.

Discuss your process
How it is made

From toluene to a finished bag

TDA is made by nitrating toluene twice and then hydrogenating the result. The isomer pattern is set at the nitration step and can only be separated afterwards, never corrected.

Stage 1

Nitration

Toluene is nitrated with mixed acid to mononitrotoluene and then to dinitrotoluene, giving roughly an 80:20 ratio of the 2,4 and 2,6 isomers.

Stage 2

Hydrogenation

Dinitrotoluene is hydrogenated over a supported catalyst, reducing both nitro groups to amines and giving crude toluenediamine and water.

Stage 3

Dehydration

Water and light ends are stripped under vacuum, and the catalyst is separated and recycled.

Stage 4

Isomer separation

Vacuum distillation and crystallisation isolate the 2,4-isomer from the 2,6-isomer and the ortho isomers, taking purity above 99%.

Stage 5

Flaking and filling

Molten product is flaked or pastillated under nitrogen and bagged in a contained plant, or loaded hot into heated tankers for molten delivery.

The 80/20 mixture versus the pure 2,4-isomer

TDI plants take the mixture. The 80:20 ratio of 2,4 to 2,6 comes straight out of the nitration step, and the isocyanate made from it is the familiar TDI 80/20 that the flexible foam industry has run on for decades — separating the isomers before phosgenation would add cost for no benefit. Everyone else usually wants the pure 2,4-isomer: polyol producers, because a defined initiator gives a defined polyol structure; dye and pigment makers, because the 2,6-isomer couples to a different shade; and specialty chemical manufacturers, because a mixed feed means a mixed product. If you are buying TDA for anything other than isocyanate manufacture, specify the 2,4 content and the 2,6 limit explicitly.

Colour, oxidation and storage

TDA oxidises more readily than most aromatic diamines. Freshly made flake is close to colourless; left exposed to air and light it moves through yellow and pink to a deep red-brown within days. The change costs very little reactivity — the amine value barely moves — but it carries into the colour of polyols, dyes and finished foam, so colour-sensitive users should specify a limit and order against their own draw-down. Sealed, opaque packs stored cool and dry normally hold specification for twenty-four months. Molten storage should be nitrogen-blanketed throughout and not held hot longer than the process requires, since hot storage accelerates both darkening and vapour exposure.

Applications

Where TDA is used

One very large outlet, a second substantial one in rigid foam, and a long tail of intermediates and colourants.

Toluene diisocyanate (TDI)

The dominant outlet by volume. Phosgenation of the 80/20 isomer mixture gives TDI for flexible slabstock and moulded foam, coatings, adhesives and elastomers.

Amine-initiated rigid polyols

Alkoxylated to give aromatic amine-initiated polyether polyols — autocatalytic, high-functionality starters for rigid polyurethane and polyisocyanurate insulation.

Dyes and pigments

Diazotised and coupled to give azo, direct and sulphur dyes and pigment intermediates for textiles, leather, paper and inks.

Epoxy curing agent

A low-ratio aromatic hardener at an AHEW of about 30.5, giving hard, chemically resistant, high-temperature networks in specialty and electrical systems.

Chain extender intermediates

Ring alkylation gives the hindered liquid diamines — DETDA and DMTDA — used as curatives in polyurea spray, RIM and cast elastomer systems.

Polyamides and polyimides

Condensed with aromatic diacids and dianhydrides for high-temperature resins, films and engineering polymers.

Antioxidants and inhibitors

An intermediate for aromatic amine antioxidants, Schiff bases and corrosion inhibitor packages used in lubricants and process chemicals.

Research and reference use

A standard aromatic diamine in polymer and dye chemistry research and as an analytical reference material under laboratory containment.

Not for cosmetic use. 2,4-Toluenediamine appears in older hair dye literature, but it is prohibited in cosmetic products in the European Union and restricted or banned in a number of other jurisdictions. We do not supply it for cosmetic applications. If you are sourcing for a personal care formulation, the compliant chemistry is a different substance entirely — tell us what you are trying to achieve and we will point you at it.

Handling, storage and safety

A category 1B carcinogen — containment first

TDA may cause cancer, is suspected of causing genetic defects and of damaging fertility or the unborn child, is toxic if swallowed and harmful by other routes, and causes damage to the liver through prolonged or repeated exposure. It is absorbed through intact skin. The notes below are a summary for planning only — always work to the Safety Data Sheet, your own site risk assessment and the regulations that apply where you operate.

Containment and engineering controls

  • Charge from a closed system, a bulk-bag discharge station or a melt line — never as loose flake in an open area.
  • Local exhaust ventilation at every transfer, sampling and charging point.
  • Designate and sign the handling area; restrict access and control decontamination at the boundary.
  • No eating, drinking or storage of personal items in the handling area.

Storage and molten handling

  • Store cool, dry and dark in sealed, opaque packaging; segregate from oxidisers, acids and food or feed.
  • Hold melt tanks and traced lines above about 105 °C; blanket with dry nitrogen throughout.
  • Do not hold molten material hot for extended periods — colour and vapour exposure both rise sharply.
  • Stainless or carbon steel construction; insulate and label hot lines against thermal burns.

Personal protection and surveillance

  • Impervious chemical-resistant gloves with a defined change-out interval, plus a disposable oversuit.
  • Goggles and face shield; respiratory protection appropriate to the task where dust or vapour may be present.
  • Health surveillance including liver function monitoring where required by local regulation.
  • Eyewash, safety shower and a written decontamination and spill procedure before the material arrives on site.

Questions buyers ask

2,4-Toluenediamine FAQ

Short answers to what purchase, lab, EHS and plant teams ask us most. Anything else, ask us directly.

What is 2,4-toluenediamine used for?
Overwhelmingly as the intermediate to toluene diisocyanate, where the 80/20 isomer mixture is phosgenated to the TDI used in flexible foam, coatings, adhesives and elastomers. The isolated 2,4-isomer is used to initiate aromatic amine polyether polyols for rigid insulation foam, as a dye and pigment intermediate, as a low-ratio epoxy curing agent, and as the starting point for the DETDA and DMTDA chain extenders.
What is the difference between 2,4-TDA and the 80/20 mixture?
The 80/20 grade is the 2,4 and 2,6 isomer mixture as it comes out of nitration and hydrogenation, and it goes to isocyanate plants where separating the isomers would add cost for no benefit. The pure 2,4 grade is the isolated isomer, which is what polyol producers, dye makers and specialty manufacturers need because a mixed feed gives a mixed product. If you are not making isocyanate, specify the 2,4 content and the 2,6 limit explicitly.
Why are the two amino groups in TDA not equivalent?
Because one of them sits directly next to the methyl group and the other does not. The 2-position amine is sterically crowded by that methyl; the 4-position amine has an open neighbourhood and reacts faster. This difference is carried through into TDI, where the two isocyanate groups also react at different rates — which is exactly the processing latitude flexible foam formulators depend on.
Is TDA a restricted substance?
Yes. It is classified as a category 1B carcinogen with suspected mutagenic and reproductive effects, and it is on the REACH Candidate List as a substance of very high concern, which brings notification and supply-chain communication duties. It is prohibited in cosmetic products in the European Union and restricted in several other jurisdictions. Listing positions change, so check the current entries that apply where you operate.
Can TDA be used in hair dyes?
No, not where we supply it. 2,4-Toluenediamine appears in older hair dye literature, but it is prohibited in cosmetic products in the European Union and restricted or banned elsewhere, and we do not supply it for cosmetic applications. If you are formulating for personal care, the compliant chemistry is a different substance — tell us the shade and performance you need and we will point you in the right direction.
What is the AHEW of TDA and how much do I use in epoxy?
TDA has four active amine hydrogens and a molecular weight of 122.17, so the amine hydrogen equivalent weight is about 30.5 — one of the lowest of the aromatic hardeners. For a stoichiometric cure, parts of TDA per hundred parts of resin equal 30.5 divided by the resin's epoxy equivalent weight, times 100, so a standard liquid bisphenol-A resin at an EEW of 190 takes roughly 16 parts. Confirm against the resin supplier's data and your own cure trials.
Should I take flake or molten TDA?
Molten supply suits continuous consumers with a nitrogen-blanketed receiving tank: it removes a melting step, eliminates dust exposure and allows metered dosing. Flake or pastille in lined bags suits batch users, and lined bulk bags with a discharge spout keep charging contained. The deciding factor is usually how the material is charged into your process, not the price difference.
Why does TDA darken so quickly?
It oxidises in air and light more readily than most aromatic diamines, moving from near-colourless through yellow and pink to red-brown within days of exposure. Amine value barely changes, so reactivity is essentially unaffected, but the colour carries into polyols, dyes and finished product. Keep packs sealed and opaque, blanket molten storage with nitrogen, and specify a colour limit if your downstream product is pale.
Is TDA hazardous to transport?
Yes. It ships as UN 1709, 2,4-Toluylenediamine solid, Class 6.1, Packing Group III. Packs carry the toxic and health hazard pictograms, and export consignments carry a dangerous goods declaration.
What is the HS code for TDA?
2,4-Toluenediamine falls under heading 2921 51, which covers o-, m- and p-phenylenediamine, diaminotoluenes and their derivatives. HSN 2921 51 appears on Indian invoices, and the matching national code appears on export documents.
Do you supply trial quantities?
Yes, subject to the same end-use and regulatory check as a full order. A single bag or a laboratory pack can be arranged for qualification work. Tell us your application, your containment arrangement and any isomer or colour requirement when you ask.
How do I get a price?
