What it is

Dodecylamine at a glance

Dodecylamine, also called laurylamine or 1-dodecanamine, is a straight-chain primary amine derived from lauric acid — the dominant fatty acid in coconut oil. Its C12 chain sits at the intersection of surface activity and reactivity: long enough to anchor to surfaces and self-assemble at interfaces, short enough to remain liquid near room temperature and to dissolve in organic process streams.

At room temperature it is a waxy off-white solid melting at around 27–29 °C, becoming a mobile liquid just above that. It has a characteristic amine odour and is insoluble in water but freely soluble in alcohols, esters, and aromatic and aliphatic solvents. Its flash point is around 104 °C — it is combustible but not classified as flammable.

Dodecylamine is made by reductive amination of dodecanal or by the reduction of dodecanenitrile derived from lauric acid. The primary amine content, colour, and related secondary and tertiary amine levels are the key quality parameters for downstream processes.

Why buyers choose dodecylamine

  • Flotation collector. Adsorbs on silica and quartz surfaces by electrostatic interaction, making it the standard collector for non-sulphide ore flotation.
  • Quaternisation feedstock. Reacts with alkylating agents to give dodecyltrimethylammonium and similar quats for fabric softeners, biocides and antistatic agents.
  • Corrosion inhibitor. Forms a protective monolayer on metal surfaces in industrial water treatment and oilfield applications.
  • Emulsifier intermediate. Condensed with fatty acids or ethoxylated to give cationic and nonionic emulsifiers.

Chemistry and reactivity

How dodecylamine behaves in a formulation or reaction

A primary amino group and a C12 hydrophobic tail explain what DDA is used for: anchoring to surfaces, reacting at the nitrogen, and assembling at water–oil interfaces.

Ore flotation collecting

Protonated dodecylammonium ion adsorbs on negatively charged silica and quartz surfaces, making them hydrophobic so air bubbles carry them to the froth layer.

DDA + H⁺ → C₁₂H₂₅NH₃⁺ (collector)

Quaternisation

Alkylation of the nitrogen gives dodecyltrimethylammonium, benzalkonium and other quats used as fabric softeners, biocides and phase-transfer catalysts.

RNH₂ + 3 CH₃X → RN⁺(CH₃)₃ X⁻

Amide formation

Reacts with fatty acids, acid chlorides and esters to give dodecyl amides — building blocks for waxes, lubricants and release agents.

RNH₂ + R′COOH → R′CONHR + H₂O

Schiff base (imine) formation

Condenses with aldehydes and ketones to give imines — intermediates for agrochemicals, corrosion inhibitors and resin curatives.

RNH₂ + R′CHO → RN=CHR′ + H₂O

Ethoxylation

Reacts with ethylene oxide to give ethoxylated dodecylamine — a nonionic to cationic surfactant used in emulsification, wetting and antistatic formulations.

RNH₂ + n EO → RN(CH₂CH₂OH)₂

Corrosion inhibitor films

The amine anchor binds to metal oxide surfaces while the C12 tail repels water — forming a protective monolayer in oilfield and water-treatment systems.

Fe–OH + RNH₂ → Fe–O–NH₂R (monolayer)

Acid salt emulsifiers

Reacts with acetic or other organic acids to form amine salts that are water-dispersible and used as emulsifiers in agrochemical and textile formulations.

RNH₂ + AcOH → RNH₃⁺ AcO⁻

Epoxy curing agent

The primary amine adds across epoxide rings, cross-linking epoxy resins in coatings, adhesives and encapsulants.

RNH₂ + epoxide → β-hydroxyamine adduct

Process notes. Dodecylamine is a corrosive base. It attacks copper and copper alloys; use stainless steel, carbon steel or HDPE. The solid melts near room temperature — drum storage in heated bays or use lined totes. Keep away from strong acids, oxidising agents and nitrosating compounds.

Discuss your process
How it is made

From lauric acid to a finished drum

Commercial dodecylamine follows a well-established fatty nitrile route. The chain length is fixed by the feedstock — purified lauric acid or its methyl ester.

Stage 1

Feedstock

Lauric acid from coconut or palm kernel oil is purified to narrow the chain-length distribution.

Stage 2

Nitrile synthesis

Ammonia is reacted with lauric acid at high temperature to give dodecanenitrile (lauronitrile).

Stage 3

Hydrogenation

The nitrile is hydrogenated over a catalyst under pressure, yielding a crude primary amine with minor secondary (didodecylamine) and tertiary (tridodecylamine) components.

Stage 4

Distillation

Fractional distillation separates primary-rich from secondary- and tertiary-rich cuts. Conditions are tuned to maximise primary amine purity.

Stage 5

Finishing

DDA is tested for primary amine content, colour and related amines, then drummed under nitrogen to prevent moisture and CO₂ absorption.

Why the primary amine content matters

The reactivity of dodecylamine depends on how much of it is the primary amine. Secondary (didodecylamine) and tertiary (tridodecylamine) impurities react differently — secondary amines can form nitrosamines in the presence of nitrosating agents, and tertiary amines cannot form amides. For flotation reagents, the amine acetate is made in situ: a high primary content gives sharper performance.

Storage and handling of a waxy solid

DDA melts at 27–29 °C. In temperate climates it may arrive semi-solid or solid; a heated storage bay or drum heater is needed before use. Once melted it is stable for twelve months in sealed containers under nitrogen. Do not store open-mouthed — the amine absorbs CO₂ and moisture, which can form a surface carbonate layer that slows amine availability.

Questions buyers ask

Dodecylamine FAQ

Short answers to what purchase, plant and QC teams ask us most. Anything else, ask us directly.

What is dodecylamine used for?
Mainly as a cationic collector in mineral flotation (as its acetate salt), as a feedstock for quaternary ammonium compounds (softeners, biocides), as a corrosion inhibitor, and as an intermediate for ethoxylated amines, amides and agrochemical emulsifiers. It is also used in epoxy curing, asphalt additives and specialty synthesis.
Is DDA the same as laurylamine?
Yes. Dodecylamine (DDA), laurylamine, 1-dodecanamine and n-dodecylamine are all names for the same compound, CAS 124-22-2 — a straight C12 primary amine derived from lauric acid.
What grades of dodecylamine do you supply?
A commercial grade of ≥ 99% primary amine content, a higher-purity synthesis grade with tighter secondary-amine limits, and LR and AR laboratory grades. Tell us your application and we will confirm the right one.
Is dodecylamine a solid or a liquid?
Dodecylamine is a waxy off-white solid at room temperature, melting at about 27–29 °C. Above that it is a mobile, clear to pale yellow liquid. Drums may arrive solid or semi-solid depending on ambient temperature — a drum heater or heated storage bay brings it to a pourable state.
How should DDA be stored?
Store in a cool, dry, corrosive-liquid or solid store with containers sealed and bulk tanks nitrogen blanketed. Keep away from strong acids, oxidising agents and nitrosating compounds. If ambient temperature may fall below 28 °C, provide drum heaters or a heated bay to keep the material pourable.
Is dodecylamine hazardous to transport?
Yes. It ships under UN 2733, Amines, flammable, corrosive, n.o.s., Class 8 with a Class 3 subsidiary risk, Packing Group II. Packs carry corrosion and flame pictograms and export consignments go in UN-specification packaging with a dangerous goods declaration.
Which pack sizes are available?
Dodecylamine is supplied in approximately 170 kg UN-approved steel drums, IBC totes of approximately 850 kg, and laboratory packs from 500 g to 25 kg for R&D and qualification work.
What is the HS code for dodecylamine?
Dodecylamine is classified under heading 2921 19 — acyclic monoamines and their derivatives. HSN 2921 19 appears on Indian invoices, and the matching eight- or ten-digit national code appears on export documents. Your customs broker can confirm the full code for the destination country.
What documents come with an order?
Every dispatch carries a batch-wise Certificate of Analysis, the Safety Data Sheet, HSN details on the invoice, and labels showing grade, net weight, batch number, manufacturing date and hazard marking. Export orders carry the full shipping documentation for the destination.
Do you supply trial quantities?
Yes. A single drum or a laboratory pack can be arranged so your team can qualify the material before placing a regular order. Request a sample with your application details through our contact page.
Which countries do you supply dodecylamine to?
We ship worldwide — Middle East and Africa, South and South East Asia, East Asia, Australia and New Zealand, Europe and the CIS, and the Americas — plus domestic supply throughout India by road from Mumbai. Send the grade, quantity and destination port and we will confirm lead time, freight and documentation.
How do I get a price?
Send the grade, quantity, pack size and delivery location through our contact page, by email to source@cheloraamines.com or by phone on +91 98191 11179. A complete enquiry usually gets a quote within 24 hours.
