What it is

Hexylamine at a glance

Hexylamine, also called n-hexylamine, 1-aminohexane or hexan-1-amine, is a clear, colourless to pale yellow, flammable liquid with a fishy, ammoniacal odour. It boils at about 131 °C and dissolves only partly in water — around 12 g per litre at 20 °C — but mixes freely with alcohols, ethers and hydrocarbons.

It sits in the middle of the primary alkylamine series. Shorter amines such as n-Butylamine are water-miscible and volatile; longer ones such as Octylamine are oily and barely water-soluble. Hexylamine strikes a useful balance: an unhindered, strongly basic nitrogen with a C6 tail that makes its salts and amides surface-active and film-forming.

It is manufactured by catalytic amination of 1-hexanol with ammonia and hydrogen, or by hydrogenation of hexanenitrile. Di-n-hexylamine, residual hexanol and water are the impurities that matter, and all three are controlled in the specification.

Why buyers choose Hexylamine

  • Unhindered and reactive. The primary amino group acylates, alkylates and condenses cleanly under mild conditions.
  • Balanced hydrophobic tail. The C6 chain gives surface activity and oil solubility without the handling problems of waxy long-chain amines.
  • Liquid in every climate. It freezes around −23 °C, so there is no heated storage or drum melting.
  • Controlled impurity profile. Di-n-hexylamine, hexanol and water are all specified.

Chemistry and reactivity

How Hexylamine behaves in a reaction

Hexylamine is an unhindered, strongly basic primary amine. It reacts quickly with electrophiles, and its C6 chain carries through into products that need oil solubility or surface activity.

Amide formation

Reacts with acid chlorides, anhydrides and esters to give N-hexyl amides used as intermediates and dispersing agents.

RCOCl + C₆H₁₃NH₂ → amide

Dithiocarbamates

Adds to carbon disulfide to give hexyldithiocarbamates for rubber and fungicide chemistry.

CS₂ + C₆H₁₃NH₂ → dithiocarbamate

Imine formation

Condenses with aldehydes and ketones to Schiff bases, which reduce to secondary amines.

RCHO + C₆H₁₃NH₂ → imine

Salt formation

Neutralises fatty, phosphoric and carboxylic acids to hexylammonium salts that film metal surfaces.

acid + C₆H₁₃NH₂ → salt

Urea formation

Adds across isocyanates to give N-hexyl ureas for agro and pharma intermediates.

RNCO + C₆H₁₃NH₂ → urea

Epoxide ring opening

Opens epoxides to amino alcohols and acts as a monofunctional modifier for epoxy resins.

epoxide + C₆H₁₃NH₂ → amino alcohol

Ethoxylation

Takes up ethylene oxide to give ethoxylated hexylamines, non-ionic to cationic surfactants.

C₆H₁₃NH₂ + n EO → ethoxylate

Acid scavenging

With a conjugate-acid pKa near 10.6 it neutralises HCl released in acylation and sulfonylation steps.

pKa ≈ 10.6 at 25 °C

Process notes. Hexylamine has a flash point near 28 °C, so it is flammable at warm ambient temperature. Additions to acid chlorides and isocyanates are strongly exothermic — dose with cooling, keep transfers earthed and blanket vessels with nitrogen.

Discuss your process
How it is made

From feedstock to a finished drum

Hexylamine is made by catalytic amination, and the route sets the impurity profile: higher amines from over-reaction, and residual alcohol or nitrile from incomplete conversion.

Stage 1

Feedstock

1-Hexanol, or hexanenitrile, is fed with ammonia and hydrogen to a fixed-bed reactor.

Stage 2

Catalytic amination

Over a nickel or cobalt catalyst at elevated temperature and pressure, the alcohol is converted to the primary amine; excess ammonia holds down secondary amine.

Stage 3

Crude amine

The reactor delivers hexylamine with ammonia, water, unreacted hexanol and some di- and tri-n-hexylamine.

Stage 4

Separation

Ammonia is recovered and recycled; water is split off and fractional distillation separates mono-, di- and tri-hexylamine.

Stage 5

Finishing

Product is tested for assay, di-hexylamine, hexanol, water and colour, then filled under nitrogen into carboys, drums, totes or bulk containers.

Why the impurity profile matters

Di-n-hexylamine is the main by-product. At high levels it upsets the stoichiometry of an acylation and leaves a secondary-amide impurity. Residual 1-hexanol comes from incomplete conversion; it is inert in most salt-forming work but competes in reactions with acid chlorides and isocyanates.

Water matters wherever the next step is moisture sensitive, and colour matters in surfactant and emulsifier formulations. Where a registration dossier or a validated process names limits, send them with the enquiry and we will match the batch rather than send the standard cut.

Storage life and colour

Twelve months in sealed original packing, kept cool and out of sunlight, is the normal working figure. Hexylamine picks up carbon dioxide from air and forms a carbamate that shows as haze or a white crust at the drum mouth.

Keep drums closed between draws, blanket tanks with nitrogen where you can, and re-check assay, water and colour before a critical batch from older stock. A retained sample of every batch is held here.

Handling, storage and safety

Flammable, corrosive and toxic

Hexylamine is a flammable, corrosive and toxic base with a flash point near 28 °C and limited water solubility. The notes below are a summary for planning only — work to the Safety Data Sheet supplied with your consignment and to your own site risk assessment.

Storage

  • Cool, dry, well-ventilated store away from direct sun, heat and every ignition source.
  • Keep containers tightly closed; nitrogen blanketing limits colour rise and carbamate formation.
  • Segregate from acids, oxidising agents, acid chlorides, isocyanates and halogenated compounds.
  • Bund the area, earth the racking, and keep a spill kit with absorbent and neutralising material nearby.

Materials of construction

  • Stainless steel, carbon steel, HDPE and PTFE are generally suitable.
  • Avoid copper, copper alloys, brass, bronze, zinc and galvanised surfaces — amines attack them.
  • Use gaskets and seals rated for amines; PTFE works, natural rubber and some elastomers swell.
  • Earth and bond equipment during every transfer, because the vapour is flammable and heavier than air.

Personal protection

  • Chemical splash goggles and a face shield when decanting, sampling or connecting hoses.
  • Chemical-resistant gloves (butyl or nitrile rated for amines), apron or suit and closed footwear — skin contact is a significant route of exposure.
  • Local exhaust ventilation at the transfer point; respiratory protection with an amine-rated cartridge where vapour may build up.
  • Eyewash and safety shower within ten seconds' reach of the handling point.

Testing

What we check, and how

The numbers on a Certificate of Analysis are only useful if you know how they were produced. These are the methods behind the figures on ours, and the checks worth repeating at your own goods-inward.

Gas chromatography

Separates the amine from related amines and residual solvents in one run, and gives both the assay and the impurity profile that matter to your reaction.

Acid–base titration

An independent check on total amine content, useful as a quick goods-inward confirmation before a drum is released to production.

Karl Fischer

Water determination, which matters wherever the next step is moisture sensitive or the amine feeds an anhydrous reaction.

APHA colour

A visual platinum–cobalt comparison. A rising colour value is the earliest sign that a pack has been exposed to air or held too long.

Density and refractive index

Fast confirmation of identity and strength, and a simple way to spot a wrong pack or a contaminated drum.

Non-volatile matter and iron

Gravimetric residue and trace metal checks, which matter for catalytic steps and regulated formulations.

Retained samples

A sample from every dispatched batch is held here, so a query months later can be settled against the original material.

Batch traceability

The batch number on the label ties back to the COA, the test record and the supply lot, which is what your auditor will ask to see.

Third-party testing

Where your customer or regulator needs an independent result, we can arrange analysis at a NABL-accredited laboratory before dispatch.

Why buy from us

What you get besides the chemical

Hexylamine is a line on a price list and a headache in a warehouse. What separates suppliers is the grade flexibility, the paperwork and the answer you get when something is not routine.

One source for the whole amine list

Hexylamine sits alongside the rest of our amine range, from ethanolamines to fatty amines. Your purchase team raises one enquiry, compares one quote and manages one vendor record instead of six.

Grades, not just the standard cut

Commercial, LR and AR grades are available, so you are not forced to redesign a step around the only grade your supplier happens to carry.

Paperwork that clears first time

COA, SDS, correct HSN and HS codes, dangerous goods declarations and certificates of origin are prepared with the consignment, not chased afterwards.

Specification matching

Tell us your limits on assay, di-hexylamine, hexanol, water and colour and we quote against them, rather than sending the standard cut and letting your QC find out.

Scheduled repeat supply

Once we know your monthly draw we hold and release material on a schedule, so you carry less inventory of a hazardous product.

Someone who knows the chemistry

Describe the reaction or formulation rather than the product code and we will tell you which grade fits — and say so plainly when a different amine would serve you better.

How to write an enquiry that gets a firm price

Most delays in quoting Hexylamine come from a missing line in the enquiry, not from availability. Send these details and a firm price usually comes back the same day.

Include in your enquiry

  • Full name and CAS. Hexylamine, CAS 111-26-2 — never just an abbreviation.
  • Grade. Commercial, LR and AR, plus any tighter limit your process needs.
  • Quantity and frequency. Trial pack, monthly offtake or an annual contract.
  • Pack size. Carboy, drum, IBC or bulk, and whether packs are returnable.
  • Destination. Delivery address for road, or port and Incoterm for export.
  • Key limits. Limits on assay, di-hexylamine, hexanol, water and colour that your step is sensitive to.
  • Documents. Anything beyond COA and SDS that your site or customs needs.
  • Application. One line on the reaction or formulation helps us confirm the right grade.

Mistakes that cost money

  • Ordering by short name only. The amine family has many near-identical names; always quote the CAS number.
  • Ignoring the impurity profile. Two quotes at the same price can carry very different related-amine and water content.
  • Using brass or copper fittings. Amines attack copper alloys; the pump fails, not the chemical.
  • Storing part-used drums open. Air and carbon dioxide raise colour and form carbamate solids.
  • Heating a sealed container. Pressure builds far faster than operators expect.
  • Leaving out the end use. Dangerous goods cannot ship without it, so the order simply stops.
  • Ordering at the last minute. DG bookings, packaging and permits take longer than ordinary freight.
  • Skipping the sample. A 25 litre trial pack costs far less than a failed production batch.

Not sure of some of it yet? Send what you have. A description of the reaction step and an approximate monthly volume is enough for us to come back with a recommended grade, a pack plan and an indicative price.

Glossary

Terms used on this page

Plain definitions of the words that appear on a Hexylamine specification, label and shipping document.

Assay
The measured amount of the amine in the material, given as a percentage by weight or by GC area.
Anhydrous
Without water. Most amines are supplied neat, so water is controlled by Karl Fischer rather than by dilution.
APHA colour
A platinum-cobalt scale for how colourless a liquid is. Lower is better, and a rising number is the first sign of air exposure.
Amine class
Primary amines carry one carbon group on nitrogen, secondary two, tertiary three. It sets how many N–H bonds are free to react.
COA
Certificate of Analysis - the tested results for the specific batch you received.
SDS
Safety Data Sheet - hazards, handling, storage, spill response, first aid and disposal.
HSN and HS code
Tariff classification. HSN 2921 19 is used on Indian invoices for acyclic monoamines and derivatives; the matching HS code appears on export papers.
IBC
Intermediate bulk container - the caged 1000 litre tote moved by forklift.
UN number
The four-digit transport identifier that fixes the label, packaging and segregation rules.
Packing group
The degree of transport danger within a hazard class. Group I is high, II medium and III low danger.
LR and AR grade
Laboratory reagent and analytical reagent - tighter impurity limits for laboratory and analytical work.
Karl Fischer
The standard titration for measuring water content in a chemical.
pKa
A measure of acid strength. For an amine it is quoted for the conjugate acid; a higher value means a stronger base.
Flash point
The lowest temperature at which the liquid gives off enough vapour to ignite.
Film-forming inhibitor
An amine or amine salt that adsorbs on metal and leaves a thin water-repellent layer that slows corrosion.
Acid scavenger
A base added to neutralise acid released during a reaction so the pH stays workable.
Questions buyers ask

Hexylamine FAQ

Short answers to what purchase, plant and QC teams ask us most about this product. Anything else, ask us directly.

What is hexylamine used for?
Mainly to make corrosion inhibitors, surfactants and emulsifiers, and as an intermediate for pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, rubber chemicals and dyes.
How is it different from n-butylamine and octylamine?
All three are straight-chain primary amines. Hexylamine sits in the middle: less volatile and less water-soluble than n-butylamine, more volatile and more soluble than octylamine. Chain length changes solubility, flash point and the surface activity of derivatives, so they are not interchangeable in a validated process.
How pure is your hexylamine?
Commercial grade is typically 99.0% and above by GC, with di-n-hexylamine at 0.3% maximum, 1-hexanol at 0.2% maximum and water at 0.2% maximum. LR and AR grades carry tighter limits.
Is it hazardous to transport?
Yes. It is normally classed as a corrosive liquid with a flammable subsidiary risk (Class 8, subsidiary 3). The exact UN entry and packing group are stated on the SDS supplied with each batch.
What is the shelf life?
Twelve months in sealed original packing, kept cool, closed and out of sunlight. Re-check assay, water and colour before a critical batch.
Which pack sizes are available?
25 litre HDPE carboys for trials, MS or HDPE drums as the standard production pack, 1000 litre IBC totes for regular consumers, and bulk or ISO tank loads for larger campaigns.
How should it be stored and handled?
Store cool, dry, ventilated and bunded, away from heat and ignition sources, with containers closed and preferably nitrogen blanketed, and segregated from acids, oxidisers, acid chlorides and isocyanates. Use stainless steel, carbon steel or HDPE with PTFE seals; avoid copper, brass and zinc. Wear splash goggles, amine-resistant gloves and an apron — skin contact is a key exposure route.
What documents come with an order?
A batch-wise Certificate of Analysis, the Safety Data Sheet, HSN details on the invoice, and labels showing net weight, batch number, manufacturing date and UN number. Export orders also carry the commercial invoice, packing list, certificate of origin and dangerous goods declaration.
Do you supply trial quantities?
Yes. A 25 litre carboy or a smaller laboratory pack can be arranged so your team can qualify the material before a production order. Request a sample with your application details.
Which countries do you supply?
We ship worldwide — the Middle East and Africa, Asia Pacific, Europe and the CIS and the Americas — alongside road dispatch across India, through Nhava Sheva and Mundra on EXW, FOB, CFR, CIF or DAP terms.
How do I get a price?
Send the grade, quantity, pack size and delivery location through our contact page, by email to source@cheloraamines.com or by phone on +91 98191 11179. A complete enquiry usually gets a quote within 24 hours.
What is the HS code?
It falls under harmonised heading 2921 19, covering other acyclic monoamines and their derivatives, shown as HSN 2921 19 on Indian invoices. The destination country's full code is stated on the export documents.
Which materials can I use for pumps, pipework and storage?
Stainless steel, carbon steel and HDPE with PTFE gaskets and seals. Avoid copper, brass, bronze, zinc and galvanised surfaces because amines attack copper alloys. Earth and bond equipment during transfer.
Can you supply against our own specification?
Yes. Send the parameters that matter — typically assay, di-hexylamine, hexanol, water and colour — and we will confirm whether we can meet them from stock or need to select or source a batch.
What is the minimum order quantity and the usual lead time?
A single 25 litre carboy is enough for trial and qualification work, while production orders move in drums, totes or container loads. Ex-stock domestic dispatches typically leave within a few working days; export and made-to-specification campaigns take longer.
Do I need any permit or declaration to buy it?
