What it is

Diethanolamine at a glance

Diethanolamine, usually shortened to DEA and also called 2,2′-iminodiethanol, is a secondary amine carrying two hydroxyethyl groups. It is a milder base than monoethanolamine, much less volatile, and very soluble in water.

Pure DEA melts at about 28 °C, so depending on the season it arrives as a white crystalline solid or a viscous liquid. Buyers either melt it out of drums, store it in a heated tank, or choose DEA 85% — a low-freeze grade with about 15% water that stays liquid at ordinary temperatures.

Like the other ethanolamines, DEA is made by reacting ethylene oxide with ammonia and separating the MEA, DEA and TEA by vacuum distillation. As a secondary amine it can form N-nitrosodiethanolamine with nitrosating agents, which is why it is restricted in cosmetics in several markets and why nitrite contact should be avoided.

Why buyers choose diethanolamine

  • Selective gas treating. Lower reactivity and heat of reaction than MEA, with less degradation from COS and CS₂ in refinery gases.
  • Low volatility. A boiling point near 269 °C means negligible solvent loss from open systems and hot formulations.
  • Two hydroxyls and one N–H. Gives diethanolamides, morpholine and iminodiacetic acid in a single step.
  • Choice of physical form. Pure molten-grade or 85% low-freeze liquid to suit your storage.

Chemistry and reactivity

How diethanolamine behaves in a formulation or reaction

One N–H and two hydroxyl groups explain what DEA is bought for: a moderate base that absorbs acid gases, forms salts and amides, and cyclises into heterocycles. These are the jobs process chemists and formulators reach for it to do.

Acid gas absorption

Absorbs CO₂ and H₂S reversibly in aqueous solution. Compared with MEA it has a lower heat of reaction and better tolerance of COS and CS₂, so it is common in refinery gas treating.

2 R₂NH + CO₂ ⇌ R₂NCOO⁻ + R₂NH₂⁺

Diethanolamide formation

Condenses with fatty acids or methyl esters to give fatty diethanolamides such as cocamide DEA — thickeners, foam stabilisers and emulsifiers for industrial and household cleaners.

RCOOCH₃ + DEA → RCON(CH₂CH₂OH)₂

Salt formation

Neutralises sulfonic, fatty and acidic herbicide acids to give soluble DEA salts, including the DEA salt of 2,4-D used in liquid herbicide formulations.

RCOOH + DEA → RCOO⁻ DEAH⁺

Cyclisation to morpholine

Acid-catalysed dehydration of DEA closes the ring to morpholine, one of the industrial routes to this corrosion inhibitor and rubber chemical.

DEA → morpholine + H₂O

Dehydrogenation to IDA

Catalytic dehydrogenation converts DEA to iminodiacetic acid, a key intermediate for glyphosate herbicide and chelating resins.

DEA → HN(CH₂COOH)₂

Corrosion inhibition

Raises pH and forms protective soaps and borates in metalworking fluids, coolants and gas-treating circuits.

pKa 8.88 at 25 °C

Alkoxylation

The hydroxyl groups react with ethylene or propylene oxide to give polyols and amine-initiated polyethers used in polyurethane foams.

DEA + n EO → polyol

Nitrosation (to avoid)

As a secondary amine, DEA reacts with nitrites and other nitrosating agents to form N-nitrosodiethanolamine. Keep nitrites out of DEA-containing formulations.

R₂NH + HNO₂ → R₂N–NO

Process notes. DEA is solid below about 28 °C, so melt it gently and evenly — a heated room or low-temperature drum heater — rather than applying local heat, which darkens the product. Neutralisation and amidation are exothermic. If nitrosamine control is part of your specification, keep nitrites and nitrosating agents away from the product and the finished formulation.

Discuss your process
How it is made

From ethylene oxide and ammonia to a finished drum

DEA comes from the same reactor as MEA and TEA. Knowing how it is made explains why the specification controls MEA, TEA, water and colour — they all leave the reactor together.

Stage 1

Feedstock

Ethylene oxide is fed into aqueous ammonia, with the ammonia ratio set to favour the di-substituted product.

Stage 2

Reaction

The exothermic reaction runs in the liquid phase under pressure and controlled temperature.

Stage 3

Mixed ethanolamines

The reactor delivers MEA, DEA and TEA together with unreacted ammonia and water.

Stage 4

Separation

Ammonia and water are stripped, then vacuum distillation separates MEA, DEA and TEA.

Stage 5

Finishing

DEA is tested, then filled molten into drums or heated tankers, or diluted with water to make DEA 85%.

Why the impurity profile matters

The real quality question is not just "how much DEA" but "what else came with it". Residual MEA is a stronger, more reactive primary amine; residual TEA is a tertiary amine that will not form amides; and water dilutes the active and changes the melting behaviour.

Colour matters in surfactants and textile auxiliaries, and nitrite content matters wherever nitrosamines are controlled. If your downstream use is sensitive to any of these, say so at enquiry stage and we will match the batch rather than send the standard commercial cut.

Melting, storage life and colour

In sealed original packing, stored cool and dry, DEA is normally used within twelve months, and we recommend a re-check of assay and colour after that before a critical batch. To use solid product, warm the closed drum evenly to about 40–50 °C and mix before drawing — never apply a flame or local hot plate.

Bulk users usually keep DEA in a heated, insulated tank held a few degrees above its melting point under nitrogen. If heated storage is not practical, DEA 85% stays liquid at normal temperatures. A retained sample of each batch is held here, so any query can be tested against the original.

Grades and specification

Grades matched to your process

Tell us the application and your storage conditions and we will confirm the grade. Pure DEA suits sites with heated storage; DEA 85% suits sites without it.

Choosing the right grade

Pure DEA or DEA 85%?

This is the most common question at enquiry stage. The answer depends on whether your site can melt and keep DEA warm, and on whether water is acceptable in your process.

Pick 99% DEA if…

  • Water interferes with your reaction, such as amidation.
  • You have heated storage or drum-melting capability.
  • You buy in volume and want the most amine per tonne.
  • You run a gas-treating unit and dilute on site.

Pick DEA 85% if…

  • Your store is unheated.
  • Water is already part of your formulation.
  • You dose small quantities by pump.
  • You want to avoid melting drums.

A warning about abbreviations. DEA can mean diethanolamine or diethylamine, and TEA can mean triethanolamine or triethylamine — completely different products with different hazards. Triethanolamine is also sold as TEA 85 (with about 15% DEA) and TEA 99, which behave differently in cosmetics and cement. Always write the full chemical name, CAS number and grade on the enquiry and the purchase order.

Handling, storage and safety

An irritant base that needs careful handling

Diethanolamine is harmful if swallowed, causes skin irritation and serious eye damage, and may cause damage to organs through prolonged or repeated exposure. The notes below are a summary for planning only — always work to the Safety Data Sheet supplied with your consignment and your own site risk assessment.

Storage

  • Cool, dry, ventilated store, or heated tank a few degrees above 28 °C for molten DEA.
  • Keep containers closed; nitrogen blanketing is preferred for bulk tanks.
  • Segregate from acids, oxidising agents and nitrites or other nitrosating agents.
  • Bund the area and keep a spill kit with absorbent material nearby.

Materials of construction

  • Stainless steel and carbon steel are generally suitable; HDPE for drums.
  • Avoid copper, copper alloys, brass, zinc, galvanised surfaces and aluminium.
  • Use gaskets and seals rated for amines, such as PTFE.
  • Use low-temperature, even heating; avoid local hot spots.

Personal protection

  • Chemical splash goggles and a face shield when melting, decanting or sampling.
  • Chemical-resistant gloves, apron and closed footwear.
  • Local exhaust ventilation where hot product or mists are handled.
  • Eyewash and safety shower within reach of the handling point.

Testing

What we check, and how

The numbers on a Certificate of Analysis are only useful if you know how they were produced. These are the methods behind the figures on ours, and the checks worth repeating at your own goods-inward.

Gas chromatography

Separates diethanolamine from the related amines made in the same reactor, and gives the assay and impurity profile that matter most to your formulation.

Acid–base titration

An independent check on total amine content, useful as a quick goods-inward confirmation before a drum is released to production.

Karl Fischer

Water determination, which matters for anhydrous grades and confirms strength on aqueous grades.

APHA colour

A visual platinum–cobalt comparison. A rising colour value is the earliest sign that a pack has been exposed to air, heat or held too long.

Density and refractive index

Fast confirmation that the material is what the label says, and a simple way to spot dilution or the wrong pack.

Freezing point

Pure DEA freezes at about 28 °C; a low freezing point flags water or related amines, and confirms the grade before a drum is released.

Retained samples

A sample from every dispatched batch is held here, so a query months later can be settled against the original material rather than an argument.

Batch traceability

Batch number on the label ties back to the COA, the test record and the supply lot, which is what your auditor will ask to see.

Third-party testing

Where your customer or regulator needs an independent result, we can arrange analysis at a NABL-accredited laboratory before dispatch.

Why buy from us

What you get besides the chemical

Diethanolamine is a commodity on a price list. What separates suppliers is grade flexibility, the paperwork and the answer you get when something is not routine.

One source for the whole amine list

Diethanolamine sits alongside more than fifty other amines we stock, from ethanolamines to fatty amines. Your purchase team raises one enquiry, compares one quote and manages one vendor record instead of six.

The grade you need, not just the easy one

Different purities and supply forms of diethanolamine are available, so you are not forced to redesign a formulation around the only grade your supplier happens to carry.

Paperwork that clears first time

COA, SDS, correct HSN and HS codes, transport declarations and certificates of origin are prepared with the consignment, not chased afterwards by your logistics team.

Specification matching

Tell us your limits on purity, related amines, water or colour and we quote against them, rather than sending the standard cut and letting your QC department find out.

Scheduled repeat supply

Once we know your monthly draw we hold and release material on a schedule, so you carry less inventory than you otherwise would.

Someone who knows the chemistry

Describe the application rather than the product code and we will tell you which grade fits — and say so plainly when a different amine would serve you better.

How to write an enquiry that gets a firm price

Most delays in quoting diethanolamine come from a missing line in the enquiry, not from availability. Send these eight details and a firm price usually comes back the same day.

Include in your enquiry

  • Full name and CAS. Diethanolamine, CAS 111-42-2 — never just the initials.
  • Grade. 99% commercial, DEA 85% low-freeze, low-colour, or LR / AR.
  • Quantity and basis. State whether the tonnage is on product weight or on 100% active basis.
  • Specification limits. Any tighter limit on related amines, water or colour your process needs.
  • Pack size. Drum, IBC or heated ISO tank, and whether your site can melt drums.
  • Destination. Delivery address for road, or port and Incoterm for export.
  • Documents. Anything beyond COA and SDS that your site, customer or customs needs.
  • Frequency. One-off trial, monthly offtake or an annual contract.

Mistakes that cost money

  • Writing just "DEA". It also means diethylamine, a flammable and very different product.
  • Forgetting the melting point. Pure DEA is solid below about 28 °C; plan melting or choose DEA 85%.
  • Comparing prices across grades. DEA 85% carries about 15% water — compare on the 100% basis.
  • Ignoring nitrites. Secondary amines form nitrosamines; keep nitrites out of the process.
  • Using brass or copper fittings. Ethanolamines attack copper alloys.
  • Overheating a drum. Local heat darkens DEA; warm evenly and gently.
  • Not stating the end market. Cosmetic use of DEA is restricted in many markets.
  • Ordering at the last minute. Heated ISO tanks and melting take planning.

Not sure of some of it yet? Send what you have. A description of the application and an approximate monthly volume is enough for us to come back with a recommended grade, a pack plan and an indicative price.

Questions buyers ask

Diethanolamine FAQ

Short answers to what purchase, plant and QC teams ask us most about this product. Anything else, ask us directly.

What is diethanolamine used for?
Mainly for refinery and natural gas treating, for fatty diethanolamides in cleaners, in textile auxiliaries and metalworking fluids, for DEA salts of herbicides, and as an intermediate for morpholine, iminodiacetic acid and polyurethane polyols. It is also used in corrosion inhibitors and some cement additives.
Which grades of diethanolamine do you supply?
A 99% minimum commercial grade, DEA 85% low-freeze grade with about 15% water, a low-colour grade for surfactant producers, and LR and AR laboratory grades. Tell us your application and storage conditions and we will confirm which suits you.
Why is my DEA solid, and how do I melt it?
Pure diethanolamine melts at about 28 °C, so it is solid in most stores. Warm the closed drum evenly to about 40–50 °C in a heated room or with a low-temperature drum heater, then mix before drawing. Avoid flames and local hot spots, which darken the product. If melting is impractical, DEA 85% stays liquid at normal temperatures.
What is the difference between MEA, DEA and TEA?
They differ by how many hydroxyethyl groups sit on the nitrogen: one for MEA (primary amine), two for DEA (secondary) and three for TEA (tertiary). DEA sits in the middle for basicity and reactivity, keeps one N–H for amide and ring formation, and is the one most associated with nitrosamine concerns because it is a secondary amine.
How pure is your diethanolamine?
Commercial grade is typically 99.0% minimum by GC, with MEA and TEA each at 0.5% maximum, water at 0.3% maximum and APHA colour of 20 or less on the molten product. Tighter limits can be quoted against your specification.
Is diethanolamine allowed in cosmetics?
DEA is restricted or prohibited in cosmetic products in the EU and several other markets because, as a secondary amine, it can form N-nitrosodiethanolamine. Check the rules for your target market. For personal care, many formulators use MEA, TEA or isopropanolamines instead.
How should diethanolamine be stored and handled?
Store cool and dry with containers closed, or in a heated, nitrogen-blanketed tank for molten product. Keep it away from acids, oxidisers and nitrites. Use stainless or carbon steel and avoid copper, brass, zinc, galvanised surfaces and aluminium. Handle with splash goggles, a face shield, chemical-resistant gloves and an apron, with an eyewash and safety shower nearby.
Is diethanolamine hazardous to transport?
Diethanolamine is generally not regulated as a dangerous good for road, sea or air transport, although it carries GHS hazard labelling for supply. The SDS for your batch confirms the transport classification.
Which pack sizes are available?
Diethanolamine is supplied in about 220 kg HDPE or MS drums, 1000 kg IBC totes for DEA 85%, and heated ISO tanks for molten bulk. Laboratory grades are available from 500 g to 25 kg.
What is the HS code for diethanolamine?
Diethanolamine is classified under harmonised heading 2922 12, the heading for diethanolamine and its salts. The same heading is the basis for national codes worldwide and appears as HSN 2922 12 on Indian invoices. Your country's full eight or ten digit code is stated on the export documents so customs clearance is not held up.
What documents come with an order?
Every dispatch carries a batch-wise Certificate of Analysis, the Safety Data Sheet, HSN details on the invoice, and labels showing the grade, net weight, batch number, manufacturing date and any transport hazard marking. Export orders also carry the shipping documentation for the destination.
Do you supply trial quantities of diethanolamine?
Yes. A single drum or a small laboratory pack can be arranged so your team can qualify the material before placing a regular order. Request a sample with your application details.
Which countries do you supply diethanolamine to?
We ship worldwide. Regular destinations include the Middle East and Africa, South and South East Asia, East Asia, Australia and New Zealand, Europe and the CIS, and North and South America, alongside domestic supply throughout India. Shipments move in container loads through Nhava Sheva and Mundra, and we quote on EXW, FOB, CFR, CIF or DAP terms. Send the grade, quantity and destination port and we will confirm lead time, freight and documentation.
What export documents do you provide?
A commercial invoice, packing list, certificate of origin, batch-wise Certificate of Analysis, Safety Data Sheet, any dangerous goods or non-hazardous transport declaration, and the bill of lading or airway bill. Country-specific declarations such as REACH, non-GMO or allergen statements can be issued on request — tell us what your customs broker needs at enquiry stage.
What is the minimum order quantity and the usual lead time?
A single drum is enough to start for trial and qualification work; production orders normally move in drums, IBC totes or container loads. Ex-stock domestic dispatches typically leave within a few working days of order confirmation, and export or made-to-specification orders need longer depending on packing, documentation and shipping schedules. We confirm the lead time on the quotation.
Which Indian states do you deliver diethanolamine to?
