What it is

Isobutylamine at a glance

Isobutylamine, or 2-methylpropan-1-amine, is a clear, colourless, flammable liquid with the ammoniacal odour of the lower alkyl amines. It is miscible with water and with common organic solvents, and boils at about 68 °C, roughly ten degrees below n-butylamine because of the branch in the chain.

Structurally it is the compromise isomer. The methyl branch sits on the second carbon, not on the carbon bearing the nitrogen, so the amine is still a primary amine at a terminal position and reacts almost as readily as the straight-chain isomer, while the finished molecule gains the compact, fat-soluble isobutyl group that improves membrane permeability in drug design and rainfastness in crop protection.

That is why isobutylamine appears where the straight chain would be too flexible and the secondary or tertiary isomers would be too hindered: in API side chains, in sulfonamide and amide intermediates, in rubber accelerators, and in the ester and amide chemistry behind several flavour and fragrance materials.

It is manufactured by reductive amination of isobutyraldehyde, or by reaction of isobutanol with ammonia over a catalyst. Both routes give diisobutylamine and triisobutylamine alongside the primary amine, and the specification controls them together with residual ammonia, water and colour.

Why buyers choose isobutylamine

  • Branched, but not hindered. The methyl branch is one carbon from the nitrogen, so reactivity stays close to that of n-butylamine.
  • Designed-in structural feature. The isobutyl group is a deliberate choice in many actives, not a substitute for n-butyl.
  • Convenient boiling point. At about 68 °C it refluxes easily and strips cleanly at the end of a batch.
  • Controlled isomer profile. Diisobutylamine, n-butylamine, ammonia, water and colour are all specified and reported.

Chemistry and reactivity

How isobutylamine behaves in a reaction

Isobutylamine reacts like a straight-chain primary amine because the branch is one carbon removed from the nitrogen. The difference shows up downstream, in the shape and solubility of whatever it is built into.

Amide formation

Reacts with acid chlorides, anhydrides and esters to give N-isobutyl amides, a recurring intermediate step in API and crop-protection synthesis.

RCOCl + iBuNH₂ → RCONHiBu

Sulfonamide formation

Gives N-isobutyl sulfonamides with sulfonyl chlorides, used in enzyme-inhibitor and herbicide chemistry.

RSO₂Cl + iBuNH₂ → sulfonamide

Reductive amination

Condenses with aldehydes and ketones, reduced in situ to secondary isobutyl amines used in API side chains and surfactants.

R₂C=O + iBuNH₂ → amine

Urea and carbamate chemistry

Adds across isocyanates to give N-isobutyl ureas, and reacts with chloroformates to give carbamates for agrochemical actives.

RNCO + iBuNH₂ → urea

Dithiocarbamate formation

With carbon disulfide and a base gives isobutyl dithiocarbamates used as rubber accelerators and flotation collectors.

CS₂ + iBuNH₂ → dithiocarbamate

Nucleophilic substitution

Displaces halide from alkyl and activated aryl halides to install the isobutylamino group, with excess amine controlling over-alkylation.

R–X + iBuNH₂ → R–NHiBu

Schiff base formation

Condenses with aldehydes to give stable imines used as intermediates, corrosion inhibitors and ligands in catalysis.

RCHO + iBuNH₂ → imine

Salt formation

Neutralises acids to give isobutylammonium salts used in formulations, extraction and as crystalline handling forms.

acid + iBuNH₂ → salt

Process notes. Additions are exothermic, so dose under control with cooling. The flash point of about −20 °C means vapour is flammable at ambient, and every transfer needs earthing, bonding and ventilation. Where a crystallisation is being developed, remember that the isobutyl group often gives a different crystal habit and melting point from the n-butyl analogue — this is usually the reason it was chosen.

Discuss your process
How it is made

From isobutyraldehyde and ammonia to a finished drum

Isobutylamine is produced by catalytic amination, and the route determines the by-products that the specification controls — mainly diisobutylamine, residual ammonia and traces of the starting aldehyde or alcohol.

Stage 1

Feedstock

Isobutyraldehyde, or isobutanol on the alcohol route, is mixed with a large excess of ammonia, with hydrogen fed in for the reductive route.

Stage 2

Catalytic amination

The mixture passes over a supported nickel, cobalt or copper catalyst, or an acidic alumina, at elevated temperature and pressure.

Stage 3

Mixed amines

The reactor produces isobutylamine together with diisobutylamine, water, unreacted ammonia and traces of unconverted aldehyde or alcohol.

Stage 4

Separation

Ammonia is recovered and recycled and a distillation train separates the primary amine from the secondary and heavier fractions, with off-spec cuts returned.

Stage 5

Finishing

Product is dried, tested for assay, isomers, water and colour, then filled under nitrogen into carboys, drums, totes or bulk containers.

Why the impurity profile matters

Diisobutylamine is the main by-product, and as a hindered secondary amine it behaves quite differently from the product you ordered: in an acylation it gives a tertiary amide, and in a reductive amination it simply does not react. Residual isobutyraldehyde is the other impurity worth naming, because it condenses with the amine itself to give imines that appear as colour and as a slowly rising APHA number.

n-Butylamine carry-over matters where a registered process specifies the branched isomer. If your step, or your registration dossier, is sensitive to any of these, state the limit at enquiry and we will match the batch rather than send the standard commercial cut.

Storage life and colour

Twelve months in sealed original packing, cool and out of sunlight, is the normal working figure, with a re-check of assay, water and colour before a critical batch from older stock. Carbon dioxide pickup from repeated opening is the usual cause of a rising colour value and a carbamate haze.

Keep drums closed between draws, nitrogen blanket tanks where possible, and store away from heat and sunlight. A retained sample of every batch is held here so a later query can be settled against the original material.

Handling, storage and safety

Flammable, corrosive and worth respecting

Isobutylamine is a highly flammable, corrosive base with a flash point around −20 °C. The notes below are a summary for planning only — always work to the Safety Data Sheet supplied with your consignment and to your own site risk assessment.

Storage

  • Cool, dry, well-ventilated store away from direct sun, heat and every ignition source.
  • Keep containers tightly closed; nitrogen blanketing is preferred for tanks and part-used drums.
  • Segregate from acids, oxidising agents, halogens, hypochlorites and isocyanates.
  • Bund the area, earth the racking, and keep a spill kit with absorbent and neutralising material nearby.

Materials of construction

  • Stainless steel, carbon steel, HDPE and PTFE are generally suitable.
  • Avoid copper, copper alloys, brass, bronze, zinc and galvanised surfaces — amines attack them.
  • Use gaskets and seals rated for amines; PTFE and some fluoroelastomers work, natural rubber does not.
  • Earth and bond equipment during every transfer, because the vapour is flammable and heavier than air.

Personal protection

  • Chemical splash goggles and a face shield when decanting, sampling or connecting hoses.
  • Chemical-resistant gloves, apron or suit and closed footwear.
  • Local exhaust ventilation at the transfer point; respiratory protection where vapour may build up.
  • Eyewash and safety shower within ten seconds' reach of the handling point.

Testing

What we check, and how

The numbers on a Certificate of Analysis are only useful if you know how they were produced. These are the methods behind the figures on ours, and the checks worth repeating at your own goods-inward.

Gas chromatography

Separates isobutylamine from its isomers, homologues and residual ammonia in one run, and gives both the assay and the impurity profile that matter to your reaction.

Acid–base titration

An independent check on total amine content, useful as a quick goods-inward confirmation before a drum is released to production.

Karl Fischer

Water determination, which matters wherever the next step is moisture sensitive or the amine feeds an anhydrous reaction.

APHA colour

A visual platinum–cobalt comparison. A rising colour value is the earliest sign that a pack has been exposed to air or held too long.

Density and refractive index

Fast confirmation of identity and strength, and a simple way to spot a wrong pack or a contaminated drum.

Non-volatile matter and iron

Gravimetric residue and trace metal checks, which matter for catalytic steps and for any product going into a regulated formulation.

Retained samples

A sample from every dispatched batch is held here, so a query months later can be settled against the original material rather than an argument.

Batch traceability

The batch number on the label ties back to the COA, the test record and the supply lot, which is what your auditor will ask to see.

Third-party testing

Where your customer or regulator needs an independent result, we can arrange analysis at a NABL-accredited laboratory before dispatch.

Why buy from us

What you get besides the chemical

isobutylamine is a line on a price list and a headache in a warehouse. What separates suppliers is the grade flexibility, the paperwork and the answer you get when something is not routine.

One source for the whole amine list

Isobutylamine sits alongside the rest of our amine range, from ethanolamines to fatty amines. Your purchase team raises one enquiry, compares one quote and manages one vendor record instead of six.

Grades, not just the standard cut

Commercial, LR and AR material is available, so you are not forced to redesign a step around the only grade your supplier happens to carry.

Paperwork that clears first time

COA, SDS, correct HSN and HS codes, dangerous goods declarations and certificates of origin are prepared with the consignment, not chased afterwards by your logistics team.

Specification matching

Tell us your limits on isomers, water, ammonia or colour and we quote against them, rather than sending the standard cut and letting your QC department find out.

Scheduled repeat supply

Once we know your monthly draw we hold and release material on a schedule, so you carry less inventory of a flammable, corrosive product than you otherwise would.

Someone who knows the chemistry

Describe the reaction rather than the product code and we will tell you which grade fits — and say so plainly when a different amine would serve you better.

Buying guide

How to write an enquiry that gets a firm price

Most delays in quoting isobutylamine come from a missing line in the enquiry, not from availability. Send these details and a firm price usually comes back the same day.

Include in your enquiry

  • Full name and CAS. Isobutylamine, CAS 78-81-9 — never just the initials.
  • Grade. Commercial, LR or AR, plus any tighter limit your process needs.
  • Quantity and frequency. Trial pack, monthly offtake or an annual contract.
  • Pack size. Carboy, drum, IBC or bulk, and whether packs are returnable.
  • Destination. Delivery address for road, or port and Incoterm for export.
  • Key limits. Water, colour, isomer or ammonia limits your step is sensitive to.
  • Documents. Anything beyond COA and SDS that your site or customs needs.
  • Application. One line on the reaction helps us confirm the right grade.

Mistakes that cost money

  • Treating it as n-butylamine. The isobutyl group is usually a design choice — substituting the straight chain changes the product.
  • Ignoring the isomer. Two quotes at the same price can carry very different isomer and homologue content.
  • Using brass or copper fittings. Amines attack copper alloys; the pump fails, not the chemical.
  • Storing part-used drums open. Air and carbon dioxide raise colour and form carbamate solids.
  • Heating a sealed container. The low boiling point means pressure builds far faster than operators expect.
  • Leaving out the end use. Dangerous goods and monitored chemicals cannot ship without it, so the order simply stops.
  • Ordering at the last minute. DG bookings, packaging and permits take longer than ordinary freight.
  • Skipping the sample. A 25 litre trial pack costs far less than a failed production batch.

Not sure of some of it yet? Send what you have. A description of the reaction step and an approximate monthly volume is enough for us to come back with a recommended grade, a pack plan and an indicative price.

Glossary

Terms used on this page

Plain definitions of the words that appear on a isobutylamine specification, label and shipping document.

Assay
The measured amount of the amine in the material, given as a percentage by weight or by GC area.
Anhydrous
Without water. Most alkyl amines are supplied neat, so water is controlled by Karl Fischer rather than by dilution.
APHA colour
A platinum-cobalt scale for how colourless a liquid is. Lower is better, and a rising number is the first sign of air exposure.
Primary amine
A nitrogen carrying one carbon group and two hydrogens, which leaves two N-H bonds free to react.
COA
Certificate of Analysis - the tested results for the specific batch you received.
SDS
Safety Data Sheet - hazards, handling, storage, spill response, first aid and disposal.
HSN and HS code
Tariff classification. HSN 2921 19 is used on Indian invoices for acyclic monoamines; the matching HS code appears on export papers.
IBC
Intermediate bulk container - the caged 1000 litre tote moved by forklift.
UN number
The four-digit transport identifier that fixes the label, packaging and segregation rules.
Packing group
The degree of transport danger within a hazard class. Group I is high, II medium and III low danger.
LR and AR grade
Laboratory reagent and analytical reagent - tighter impurity limits for laboratory and analytical work.
Karl Fischer
The standard titration for measuring water content in a chemical.
pKa
A measure of acid strength. For an amine it is quoted for the conjugate acid; a higher value means a stronger base.
Reductive amination
Making a larger amine from a carbonyl compound by forming an imine and reducing it in the same pot.
Acid scavenger
A base added to neutralise acid released during a reaction so the pH stays workable.
Flash point
The lowest temperature at which the liquid gives off enough vapour to ignite. Below room temperature means flammable-liquid controls apply.
Questions buyers ask

Isobutylamine FAQ

Short answers to what purchase, plant and QC teams ask us most about this product. Anything else, ask us directly.

What is isobutylamine used for?
It is a synthesis intermediate. Typical uses are pharmaceutical intermediates carrying an isobutylamino, isobutyl amide or sulfonamide group, agrochemical actives where a branched alkylamino group is specified, rubber accelerators and antioxidants, surfactants and quaternary ammonium compounds, corrosion inhibitors, fuel additives, dye intermediates, and flavour and fragrance chemistry.
How is isobutylamine different from n-butylamine?
Both are primary amines with the formula C₄H₁₁N, but isobutylamine carries a methyl branch on the second carbon. It boils about ten degrees lower, is a slightly weaker base, and gives derivatives with different solubility, crystal habit and biological behaviour. In a registered pharmaceutical or agrochemical process the two are not interchangeable.
How pure is your isobutylamine, and what is controlled?
Commercial grade is typically 99.5% and above by GC, with diisobutylamine at 0.3% maximum, n-butylamine at 0.2% maximum, free ammonia at 0.2% maximum, residual isobutyraldehyde at 0.1% maximum, water at 0.3% maximum by Karl Fischer and APHA colour of 15 or less. LR and AR grades carry tighter limits.
Which pack sizes are available?
25 litre HDPE carboys for trials and laboratory work, 165 kg MS or HDPE drums as the standard production pack, 1000 litre IBC totes for regular consumers, and bulk or ISO tank loads for larger campaigns.
How should isobutylamine be stored and handled?
Store cool, dry, ventilated and bunded, away from sunlight, heat and ignition sources, with containers closed and preferably nitrogen blanketed, and segregated from acids, oxidisers, halogens and hypochlorites. Use stainless steel, carbon steel or HDPE with PTFE seals and avoid copper, brass, zinc and galvanised surfaces. Handle with splash goggles, chemical-resistant gloves and an apron, with local exhaust ventilation, an eyewash and a safety shower nearby.
Is isobutylamine hazardous to transport?
Yes. It ships under UN 1214 as a Class 3 flammable liquid with a subsidiary Class 8 corrosive risk, packing group II. Packs carry the flame and corrosion pictograms, and export consignments move in UN-specification packaging with the dangerous goods declaration prepared with the shipment.
Why does my batch develop colour?
Residual isobutyraldehyde and carbon dioxide are the usual causes. The aldehyde condenses with the amine to give imines that absorb light, and carbon dioxide forms carbamate. Both come from air ingress, so keep packs closed, blanket bulk storage with nitrogen and avoid decanting into part-filled containers that will sit open.
What is the HS code for isobutylamine?
It falls under harmonised heading 2921 19, covering acyclic monoamines and their derivatives. That heading is the basis for national codes worldwide and appears as HSN 2921 19 on Indian invoices. The destination country's full code is stated on the export documents.
What documents come with an order?
A batch-wise Certificate of Analysis, the Safety Data Sheet, HSN details on the invoice, and labels showing net weight, batch number, manufacturing date and UN number. Export orders also carry the commercial invoice, packing list, certificate of origin, dangerous goods declaration and bill of lading.
Do you supply trial quantities?
Yes. A 25 litre carboy or a smaller laboratory pack can be arranged so your team can qualify the material before a production order. Request a sample with your application and specification details.
What is the shelf life of isobutylamine?
Twelve months in sealed original packing kept cool and out of sunlight is the normal working figure. Re-check assay, water and colour before using older stock for a critical batch, and keep drums closed between draws to slow carbon dioxide pickup.
Which materials can I use for pumps, pipework and storage?
Stainless steel, carbon steel and HDPE with PTFE gaskets and seals. Avoid copper, brass, bronze, zinc and galvanised surfaces because amines attack copper alloys. Earth and bond equipment during transfer, because the vapour is flammable at ambient temperature.
Can you supply against our own specification?
Yes. Send the parameters that matter — usually assay, diisobutylamine, n-butylamine, aldehyde, ammonia, water and colour — and we will confirm whether we can meet them from stock or need to select a batch, then quote accordingly.
Which countries do you supply isobutylamine to?
We ship worldwide, with regular destinations across the Middle East and Africa, South and South East Asia, East Asia, Australia and New Zealand, Europe and the CIS, and North and South America, alongside domestic supply throughout India. Shipments move through Nhava Sheva and Mundra on EXW, FOB, CFR, CIF or DAP terms.
What is the minimum order quantity and the usual lead time?
A single 25 litre carboy is enough for trial and qualification work, while production orders move in drums, totes or container loads. Ex-stock domestic dispatches typically leave within a few working days of confirmation; export and made-to-specification campaigns take longer depending on packing, permits and sailing schedules.
Which Indian states do you deliver to?
