2-Methylpropan-2-amine · 2-aminoisobutane · ≥99% commercial, LR and AR grades
tert-Butylamine is the most hindered of the four butylamine isomers: a primary amine whose nitrogen sits on a fully substituted carbon. It is the key raw material for TBBS, the delayed-action sulfenamide rubber accelerator, and a building block in pharmaceutical and agrochemical synthesis. Chelora Amines supplies it worldwide and across India, in UN-specification packaging with a batch-wise COA and SDS.
48.04 + 9.07 + 14.01 + 2.02 = 73.14 g/mol
tert-Butylamine, also written 2-methylpropan-2-amine or 2-aminoisobutane, is a clear, colourless, highly flammable liquid that boils at about 45 °C, mixes with water in all proportions and carries a strong ammoniacal odour.
Its defining feature is steric bulk. Three methyl groups crowd the nitrogen, so it behaves as a strong but hindered base and a selective nucleophile. That hindrance is exactly what makes it valuable in rubber chemistry, where the tert-butylamino group in TBBS controls the scorch delay of a vulcanisation system.
It is manufactured by amination of isobutylene or tert-butanol with ammonia over an acidic catalyst, and is also obtained through routes based on MTBE-derived feedstocks. Residual isobutylene, tert-butanol, water and other butylamine isomers are controlled in the specification.

tert-Butylamine is a strong, hindered primary amine: reactive enough for routine acylation and substitution, bulky enough to stop at the mono-substituted product, and easy to remove afterwards because of its low boiling point.
Reacts with 2-mercaptobenzothiazole under oxidation to give TBBS, the delayed-action rubber accelerator.
MBT + tBuNH₂ → TBBSReacts with acid chlorides and anhydrides to give N-tert-butyl amides used in pharma and agro synthesis.
RCOCl + tBuNH₂ → amideServes as a source of the tert-butylamino group in β-agonist style side chains and triazine herbicides.
Ar–Cl + tBuNH₂ → Ar–NHtBuWith a conjugate-acid pKa near 10.7 it holds pH steady and strips easily under vacuum.
pKa ≈ 10.7 at 25 °CAdds across isocyanates to give N-tert-butyl ureas, several used as herbicides.
RNCO + tBuNH₂ → ureaGives N-tert-butyl sulfonamides that resist hydrolysis, used in pharma synthesis.
RSO₂Cl + tBuNH₂ → sulfonamideOpens epoxides to give tert-butylamino alcohols, the motif of several β-agonists.
epoxide + tBuNH₂ → amino alcoholNeutralises acids to give tert-butylammonium salts used in resolution and formulation.
acid + tBuNH₂ → saltProcess notes. The amine boils at about 45 °C and has a flash point near −38 °C. Dose under control with cooling and a condenser rather than heating a closed vessel, and keep all transfers earthed and under nitrogen.
Discuss your processtert-Butylamine is made by catalytic amination, and the route sets the impurity profile: related amines from over- or under-reaction, and residual feedstock from incomplete conversion.
Isobutylene or tert-butanol is fed with a large excess of ammonia to a fixed-bed reactor.
Over an acidic zeolite or similar catalyst at elevated temperature and pressure, ammonia adds to the tertiary carbon to give the primary amine.
The reactor delivers tert-butylamine with unreacted ammonia, water, tert-butanol and traces of di-tert-butylamine and oligomers.
Ammonia is recovered and recycled; distillation separates the amine, and it forms a water azeotrope that has to be broken to reach anhydrous quality.
Product is dried, tested for assay, isomers, tert-butanol, water and colour, then filled under nitrogen into carboys, drums, totes or bulk containers.
Residual tert-butanol and isobutylene come from incomplete conversion, and other butylamine isomers carry through where a plant handles more than one. Water matters most: tert-butylamine is hygroscopic and forms a low-boiling azeotrope with it, so Karl Fischer water is one of the specification limits watched hardest.
For TBBS production the buyer's concern is usually water and colour, because both carry into the oxidative coupling step. Where a registration dossier or a validated process names limits, send them with the enquiry and we will match the batch rather than send the standard cut.
Twelve months in sealed original packing, kept cool and out of sunlight, is the normal working figure. With a boiling point near 45 °C the amine is easily lost from a warm or part-filled drum, so keep packs cool and closed.
Keep drums closed between draws, blanket tanks with nitrogen where you can, and re-check assay, water and colour before a critical batch from older stock. A retained sample of every batch is held here.
Tell us the reaction and the limits that matter and we will confirm the grade. Commercial grade covers most production use; LR and AR grades are available for laboratory, method development and analytical work.

Four isomers share the formula C₄H₁₁N. tert-Butylamine is the most hindered and lowest-boiling, so it is not a family where substitution is safe.

tert-Butylamine is checked before dispatch and each consignment leaves with the paperwork your QC, stores and accounts teams need on day one.
The numbers on a Certificate of Analysis are only useful if you know how they were produced. These are the methods behind the figures on ours, and the checks worth repeating at your own goods-inward.
Separates the amine from related amines and residual solvents in one run, and gives both the assay and the impurity profile that matter to your reaction.
An independent check on total amine content, useful as a quick goods-inward confirmation before a drum is released to production.
Water determination, which matters wherever the next step is moisture sensitive or the amine feeds an anhydrous reaction.
A visual platinum–cobalt comparison. A rising colour value is the earliest sign that a pack has been exposed to air or held too long.
Fast confirmation of identity and strength, and a simple way to spot a wrong pack or a contaminated drum.
Gravimetric residue and trace metal checks, which matter for catalytic steps and regulated formulations.
A sample from every dispatched batch is held here, so a query months later can be settled against the original material.
The batch number on the label ties back to the COA, the test record and the supply lot, which is what your auditor will ask to see.
Where your customer or regulator needs an independent result, we can arrange analysis at a NABL-accredited laboratory before dispatch.

tert-Butylamine is a line on a price list and a headache in a warehouse. What separates suppliers is the grade flexibility, the paperwork and the answer you get when something is not routine.
tert-Butylamine sits alongside the rest of our amine range, from ethanolamines to fatty amines. Your purchase team raises one enquiry, compares one quote and manages one vendor record instead of six.
Commercial, LR and AR material is available, so you are not forced to redesign a step around the only grade your supplier happens to carry.
COA, SDS, correct HSN and HS codes, dangerous goods declarations and certificates of origin are prepared with the consignment, not chased afterwards.
Tell us your limits on related amines, water or colour and we quote against them, rather than sending the standard cut and letting your QC find out.
Once we know your monthly draw we hold and release material on a schedule, so you carry less inventory of a hazardous product.
Describe the reaction rather than the product code and we will tell you which grade fits — and say so plainly when a different amine would serve you better.

Most delays in quoting tert-Butylamine come from a missing line in the enquiry, not from availability. Send these details and a firm price usually comes back the same day.
Not sure of some of it yet? Send what you have. A description of the reaction step and an approximate monthly volume is enough for us to come back with a recommended grade, a pack plan and an indicative price.
