What it is

n-Propylamine at a glance

n-Propylamine, also written as propan-1-amine or mono-n-propylamine, is ammonia with one hydrogen replaced by an unbranched three-carbon chain. It is a clear, colourless, highly flammable liquid with the sharp ammoniacal smell common to the lower alkyl amines, and it mixes with water in all proportions.

Chemically it sits in a useful middle ground. It is more nucleophilic and more lipophilic than methylamine or ethylamine, so it reacts cleanly and the resulting molecule carries a little more oil solubility, yet the chain is still short enough that the amine stays water-miscible and easy to strip or distil out of a reaction mixture.

The straight chain matters. n-Propylamine and isopropylamine share a molecular formula and a molecular weight, but a linear propyl group and a branched isopropyl group behave differently: the linear amine is less hindered at nitrogen, reacts faster in alkylation and acylation, and gives a different crystal habit and melting point in the finished salt or amide. Buyers who substitute one for the other usually find out at the crystallisation step.

Commercially it is made by reacting n-propanol with ammonia over an acidic or metal catalyst, or by reductive amination of propionaldehyde. Both routes make the mono-, di- and tri-substituted amines together, so every specification controls di-n-propylamine, tri-n-propylamine and residual ammonia alongside the assay.

Why buyers choose n-propylamine

  • Clean, strong base. The conjugate acid has a pKa of roughly 10.7, so it neutralises acids and scavenges HCl dependably in synthesis.
  • Unhindered nitrogen. A linear chain leaves the lone pair accessible, which keeps alkylation and acylation rates high.
  • Water-miscible but strippable. It dissolves in aqueous systems and still comes off easily under vacuum at the end of a reaction.
  • Well-defined impurity profile. Di-n-propylamine, tri-n-propylamine, isopropylamine and free ammonia are all controlled and reported.

Chemistry and reactivity

How n-propylamine behaves in a reaction

Two properties explain almost everything n-propylamine is bought to do: the nitrogen lone pair makes it a strong base, and the straight, unhindered propyl chain keeps that nitrogen open and nucleophilic. These are the reaction types process chemists reach for it to run.

Salt formation

Reacts with mineral and organic acids to give water-soluble n-propylammonium salts, used to make crystalline intermediates easier to handle and to build liquid agrochemical formulations.

CH₃CH₂CH₂NH₂ + HCl → salt

Amide formation

With acid chlorides, anhydrides and esters it forms N-propyl amides — one of the most common single steps in pharmaceutical and crop-protection synthesis.

RCOCl + PrNH₂ → RCONHPr

Reductive amination

Condenses with aldehydes and ketones to give an imine that is reduced in situ to a secondary N-propyl amine, the standard route to many API side chains.

R₂C=O + PrNH₂ → R₂CH–NHPr

Nucleophilic substitution

Displaces halide from alkyl and activated aryl halides. Over-alkylation is the usual risk, controlled by running the amine in excess and keeping the temperature down.

R–X + PrNH₂ → R–NHPr

Urea and carbamate chemistry

Adds across isocyanates to give N-propyl ureas, and reacts with chloroformates and carbonates to give N-propyl carbamates used in agrochemical actives.

RNCO + PrNH₂ → urea

Sulfonamide formation

Reacts with sulfonyl chlorides to give N-propyl sulfonamides, a recurring motif in diuretics, herbicides and enzyme inhibitors.

RSO₂Cl + PrNH₂ → RSO₂NHPr

Ring opening of epoxides

Opens epoxides at the less hindered carbon to give N-propyl amino alcohols used in surfactants, chelants and coating additives.

epoxide + PrNH₂ → amino alcohol

Acid scavenging

With a conjugate acid pKa near 10.7 it mops up HCl and other acids released during a reaction, holding the pH where the main chemistry works.

pKa ≈ 10.7 at 25 °C

Process notes. Reactions with n-propylamine are exothermic, so add it under control with cooling available and allow for the heat of neutralisation when it meets an acid. The boiling point sits just below 50 °C, so a sealed vessel builds pressure quickly — vent, reflux or design for pressure rather than heating a closed drum. Where the reaction will not tolerate water, take the neat amine rather than an aqueous dilution.

Discuss your process
How it is made

From propanol and ammonia to a finished drum

Almost all commercial n-propylamine comes from one of two catalytic routes. Knowing which one made your batch explains the impurities the specification controls, because the by-products are made in the same reactor.

Stage 1

Feedstock

n-Propanol, or propionaldehyde for the reductive route, is vaporised and mixed with a large excess of ammonia to push the equilibrium towards the mono-substituted amine.

Stage 2

Catalytic amination

The mixture passes over an acidic alumina, zeolite or supported nickel, copper or cobalt catalyst at elevated temperature and moderate pressure, with hydrogen present on the reductive route.

Stage 3

Mixed amines

The reactor delivers n-propylamine together with di-n-propylamine, tri-n-propylamine, unconverted alcohol, water and unreacted ammonia.

Stage 4

Separation

Ammonia is recovered and recycled and a distillation train separates the mono, di and tri amines. Off-spec cuts return to the reactor rather than being discarded.

Stage 5

Finishing

Product is dried to specification, tested for assay, isomers, water and colour, then filled under nitrogen into carboys, drums, totes or bulk containers.

Why the impurity profile matters

Because all three propylamines leave the reactor together, the real quality question is not only how much n-propylamine is present but what came with it. Di-n-propylamine is a secondary amine that will react once and stop, tri-n-propylamine is tertiary and simply reports as unusable mass, and free ammonia competes for the same electrophile and can leave you with an unwanted primary amide.

Isopropylamine, where the plant also runs the branched product, is the other impurity worth naming in an enquiry. If your step is sensitive to any of these, state the limit and we will match the batch rather than send the standard commercial cut.

Storage life and colour

In sealed original packing, stored cool and out of sunlight, n-propylamine is normally used within twelve months, and we suggest a re-check of assay, water and colour after that before a critical batch. The material does not spoil so much as drift: air and carbon dioxide ingress raise the APHA colour and throw a carbamate haze, and repeatedly opening a part-used drum is the usual cause.

Keep drums closed between draws, blanket tanks with nitrogen where you can, and never store packs against a hot wall or in direct sun. A retained sample of every batch is held here, so a consignment queried months later can be tested against the original material.

Know the difference

n-Propylamine and isopropylamine are not interchangeable

They share a formula, a molecular weight and three letters in most abbreviations, which is exactly why the wrong one reaches the plant. The difference is where the nitrogen sits on the chain, and that changes reaction rate, steric access and the physical behaviour of everything made downstream.

Handling, storage and safety

Flammable, corrosive and worth respecting

n-Propylamine is a highly flammable, corrosive base with a flash point far below room temperature and a boiling point below 50 °C. The notes below are a summary for planning only — always work to the Safety Data Sheet supplied with your consignment and to your own site risk assessment.

Storage

  • Cool, dry, well-ventilated store away from direct sun, heat and every ignition source.
  • Keep containers tightly closed; nitrogen blanketing is preferred for tanks and part-used drums.
  • Segregate from acids, oxidising agents, halogens, hypochlorites and isocyanates.
  • Bund the area, earth the racking, and keep a spill kit with absorbent and neutralising material nearby.

Materials of construction

  • Stainless steel, carbon steel, HDPE and PTFE are generally suitable.
  • Avoid copper, copper alloys, brass, bronze, zinc and galvanised surfaces — amines attack them.
  • Use gaskets and seals rated for amines; PTFE and some fluoroelastomers work, natural rubber does not.
  • Earth and bond equipment during every transfer, because the vapour is flammable and heavier than air.

Personal protection

  • Chemical splash goggles and a face shield when decanting, sampling or connecting hoses.
  • Chemical-resistant gloves, apron or suit and closed footwear.
  • Local exhaust ventilation at the transfer point; respiratory protection where vapour may build up.
  • Eyewash and safety shower within ten seconds' reach of the handling point.

Testing

What we check, and how

The numbers on a Certificate of Analysis are only useful if you know how they were produced. These are the methods behind the figures on ours, and the checks worth repeating at your own goods-inward.

Gas chromatography

Separates n-propylamine from its isomers, homologues and residual ammonia in one run, and gives both the assay and the impurity profile that matter to your reaction.

Acid–base titration

An independent check on total amine content, useful as a quick goods-inward confirmation before a drum is released to production.

Karl Fischer

Water determination, which matters wherever the next step is moisture sensitive or the amine feeds an anhydrous reaction.

APHA colour

A visual platinum–cobalt comparison. A rising colour value is the earliest sign that a pack has been exposed to air or held too long.

Density and refractive index

Fast confirmation of identity and strength, and a simple way to spot a wrong pack or a contaminated drum.

Non-volatile matter and iron

Gravimetric residue and trace metal checks, which matter for catalytic steps and for any product going into a regulated formulation.

Retained samples

A sample from every dispatched batch is held here, so a query months later can be settled against the original material rather than an argument.

Batch traceability

The batch number on the label ties back to the COA, the test record and the supply lot, which is what your auditor will ask to see.

Third-party testing

Where your customer or regulator needs an independent result, we can arrange analysis at a NABL-accredited laboratory before dispatch.

Why buy from us

What you get besides the chemical

n-propylamine is a line on a price list and a headache in a warehouse. What separates suppliers is the grade flexibility, the paperwork and the answer you get when something is not routine.

One source for the whole amine list

n-Propylamine sits alongside the rest of our amine range, from ethanolamines to fatty amines. Your purchase team raises one enquiry, compares one quote and manages one vendor record instead of six.

Grades, not just the standard cut

Commercial, LR and AR material is available, so you are not forced to redesign a step around the only grade your supplier happens to carry.

Paperwork that clears first time

COA, SDS, correct HSN and HS codes, dangerous goods declarations and certificates of origin are prepared with the consignment, not chased afterwards by your logistics team.

Specification matching

Tell us your limits on isomers, water, ammonia or colour and we quote against them, rather than sending the standard cut and letting your QC department find out.

Scheduled repeat supply

Once we know your monthly draw we hold and release material on a schedule, so you carry less inventory of a flammable, corrosive product than you otherwise would.

Someone who knows the chemistry

Describe the reaction rather than the product code and we will tell you which grade fits — and say so plainly when a different amine would serve you better.

Buying guide

How to write an enquiry that gets a firm price

Most delays in quoting n-propylamine come from a missing line in the enquiry, not from availability. Send these details and a firm price usually comes back the same day.

Include in your enquiry

  • Full name and CAS. n-Propylamine, CAS 107-10-8 — never just the initials.
  • Grade. Commercial, LR or AR, plus any tighter limit your process needs.
  • Quantity and frequency. Trial pack, monthly offtake or an annual contract.
  • Pack size. Carboy, drum, IBC or bulk, and whether packs are returnable.
  • Destination. Delivery address for road, or port and Incoterm for export.
  • Key limits. Water, colour, isomer or ammonia limits your step is sensitive to.
  • Documents. Anything beyond COA and SDS that your site or customs needs.
  • Application. One line on the reaction helps us confirm the right grade.

Mistakes that cost money

  • Writing just “propylamine”. It is read as either the normal or the iso isomer — state n-propylamine and CAS 107-10-8.
  • Ignoring the isomer. Two quotes at the same price can carry very different isomer and homologue content.
  • Using brass or copper fittings. Amines attack copper alloys; the pump fails, not the chemical.
  • Storing part-used drums open. Air and carbon dioxide raise colour and form carbamate solids.
  • Heating a sealed container. The low boiling point means pressure builds far faster than operators expect.
  • Leaving out the end use. Dangerous goods and monitored chemicals cannot ship without it, so the order simply stops.
  • Ordering at the last minute. DG bookings, packaging and permits take longer than ordinary freight.
  • Skipping the sample. A 25 litre trial pack costs far less than a failed production batch.

Not sure of some of it yet? Send what you have. A description of the reaction step and an approximate monthly volume is enough for us to come back with a recommended grade, a pack plan and an indicative price.

Glossary

Terms used on this page

Plain definitions of the words that appear on a n-propylamine specification, label and shipping document.

Assay
The measured amount of the amine in the material, given as a percentage by weight or by GC area.
Anhydrous
Without water. Most alkyl amines are supplied neat, so water is controlled by Karl Fischer rather than by dilution.
APHA colour
A platinum-cobalt scale for how colourless a liquid is. Lower is better, and a rising number is the first sign of air exposure.
Primary amine
A nitrogen carrying one carbon group and two hydrogens, which leaves two N-H bonds free to react.
COA
Certificate of Analysis - the tested results for the specific batch you received.
SDS
Safety Data Sheet - hazards, handling, storage, spill response, first aid and disposal.
HSN and HS code
Tariff classification. HSN 2921 19 is used on Indian invoices for acyclic monoamines; the matching HS code appears on export papers.
IBC
Intermediate bulk container - the caged 1000 litre tote moved by forklift.
UN number
The four-digit transport identifier that fixes the label, packaging and segregation rules.
Packing group
The degree of transport danger within a hazard class. Group I is high, II medium and III low danger.
LR and AR grade
Laboratory reagent and analytical reagent - tighter impurity limits for laboratory and analytical work.
Karl Fischer
The standard titration for measuring water content in a chemical.
pKa
A measure of acid strength. For an amine it is quoted for the conjugate acid; a higher value means a stronger base.
Reductive amination
Making a larger amine from a carbonyl compound by forming an imine and reducing it in the same pot.
Acid scavenger
A base added to neutralise acid released during a reaction so the pH stays workable.
Flash point
The lowest temperature at which the liquid gives off enough vapour to ignite. Below room temperature means flammable-liquid controls apply.
Questions buyers ask

n-Propylamine FAQ

Short answers to what purchase, plant and QC teams ask us most about this product. Anything else, ask us directly.

What is n-propylamine used for?
It is used almost entirely as a synthesis intermediate. The main outlets are pharmaceutical intermediates carrying an N-propyl amide, sulfonamide or amine side chain, agrochemical actives and their formulation salts, rubber accelerators and antioxidants, dye and pigment intermediates, cationic water-treatment polymers, surfactants and corrosion inhibitors.
What is the difference between n-propylamine and isopropylamine?
They have the same formula, C₃H₉N, and the same molecular weight, but the nitrogen sits on the end carbon in n-propylamine and on the middle carbon in isopropylamine. The linear amine is less hindered and generally reacts faster, boils about 15 °C higher and gives different crystal behaviour in the resulting salts and amides. They are not interchangeable in a validated process — always order by full name and CAS number.
How pure is your n-propylamine, and what is controlled?
Commercial grade is typically 99.0% and above by GC, with di-n-propylamine at 0.5% maximum, tri-n-propylamine and isopropylamine at 0.2% maximum each, free ammonia at 0.2% maximum, water at 0.5% maximum by Karl Fischer and APHA colour of 15 or less. LR and AR grades carry tighter limits. If your step needs something tighter still, state it at enquiry and we will quote against your specification.
Which pack sizes are available?
25 litre HDPE carboys for trials and laboratory work, 160 kg MS or HDPE drums as the standard production pack, 1000 litre IBC totes for regular consumers, and bulk or ISO tank loads for continuous plants. Laboratory grades are also supplied in 2.5 L and 5 L packs.
How should n-propylamine be stored and handled?
Store in a cool, dry, well-ventilated and bunded area away from sunlight, heat and ignition sources, with containers closed and preferably nitrogen blanketed. Keep it away from acids, oxidisers, halogens and hypochlorites. Use stainless steel, carbon steel or HDPE with PTFE seals, and avoid copper, brass, zinc and galvanised surfaces. Handle with splash goggles, chemical-resistant gloves and an apron, with local exhaust ventilation and an eyewash and safety shower nearby.
Is n-propylamine hazardous to transport?
Yes. It ships under UN 1277 as a Class 3 flammable liquid with a subsidiary Class 8 corrosive risk, packing group II. Packs carry the flame and corrosion pictograms, and export consignments move in UN-specification packaging with the dangerous goods declaration and transport emergency information prepared with the shipment.
Why does my drum build pressure in summer?
The boiling point is only 47 to 49 °C and the vapour pressure is already a few hundred millibar at room temperature, so a warm store or direct sun raises the internal pressure quickly. Keep packs cool, shaded and ventilated, never apply heat to a sealed container, and open closures slowly and away from your face, ideally when the drum is at its coolest.
What is the HS code for n-propylamine?
It falls under harmonised heading 2921 19, which covers acyclic monoamines and their derivatives other than the methylamines. That heading is the basis for national codes worldwide and appears as HSN 2921 19 on Indian invoices for GST input credit. The destination country's full eight or ten digit code is stated on the export documents.
What documents come with an order?
A batch-wise Certificate of Analysis, the Safety Data Sheet, HSN details on the invoice, and labels showing net weight, batch number, manufacturing date and UN number. Export orders also carry the commercial invoice, packing list, certificate of origin, dangerous goods declaration and bill of lading.
Do you supply trial quantities?
Yes. A 25 litre carboy, or a smaller laboratory pack, can be arranged so your team can qualify the material before placing a production order. Request a sample with your application and specification details.
What is the shelf life of n-propylamine?
Twelve months in sealed original packing kept cool and out of sunlight is the normal working figure. The material drifts rather than spoils: air and carbon dioxide ingress raise the APHA colour and form a carbamate haze. Keep drums closed between draws, and re-check assay, water and colour before using older stock for a critical batch.
Which materials can I use for pumps, pipework and storage?
Stainless steel, carbon steel and HDPE are generally suitable, with PTFE gaskets and seals. Avoid copper, brass, bronze, zinc and galvanised surfaces, because amines attack copper alloys — the usual symptom is a failed pump seal or a discoloured product rather than any problem with the chemical. Earth and bond equipment during transfer.
Can you supply against our own specification?
Yes. Send the parameters and limits that matter — typically assay, di-n-propylamine, isopropylamine, ammonia, water and colour — and we will confirm whether we can meet them from stock or need to select a batch, and quote accordingly.
Which countries do you supply n-propylamine to?
We ship worldwide. Regular destinations include the Middle East and Africa, South and South East Asia, East Asia, Australia and New Zealand, Europe and the CIS, and North and South America, alongside domestic supply throughout India. Shipments move in container loads through Nhava Sheva and Mundra and are quoted on EXW, FOB, CFR, CIF or DAP terms.
What is the minimum order quantity and the usual lead time?
A single 25 litre carboy is enough to start for trial and qualification work; production orders normally move in drums, totes or container loads. Ex-stock domestic dispatches typically leave within a few working days of order confirmation, while export or made-to-specification campaigns take longer depending on packing, permits and sailing schedules. The lead time is confirmed on the quotation.
Which Indian states do you deliver to?
