What it is

Triethylamine at a glance

Triethylamine, almost always written TEA in a plant, is ammonia with all three hydrogens replaced by ethyl groups. It is a tertiary amine: the nitrogen still carries a lone pair and is a strong base, but there is no N–H bond, so it cannot be acylated and cannot end up in your product. That is not a limitation — it is the whole point. An acid scavenger has to take up HCl and then be washed away as a salt, and triethylamine does exactly that.

It is a colourless, mobile liquid boiling at 89.5 °C with a strong fishy ammoniacal odour, supplied neat at 99 to 99.5 percent rather than as a solution. One unusual property is worth knowing: its solubility in water falls as the temperature rises, so a solution that is clear in a cold vessel can turn cloudy and separate on warming.

Industrially it is made by reacting ethanol with ammonia over a catalyst. The reactor produces mono-, di- and triethylamine together and the three are separated by distillation — which is why the same producers usually supply all three, and why a triethylamine specification always states the diethylamine content.

Why buyers choose triethylamine

  • It scavenges acid and leaves. The hydrochloride salt filters or washes out, so the amine never contaminates the product.
  • Strong base, moderate nucleophile. The conjugate acid has a pKa near 10.75, and the three ethyl groups shield the nitrogen enough to limit side reactions.
  • A liquid at room temperature. Ordinary drum and tote handling, with no pressure equipment.
  • Volatile enough to strip. Excess amine is removed by distillation rather than an extra wash stage.

Chemistry and reactivity

How triethylamine behaves in a reaction

One property explains almost everything triethylamine is used for: a strongly basic nitrogen with no hydrogen on it. It takes protons, catalyses reactions and forms salts, but it is never built into the product — so it can be added in excess and removed afterwards.

Acid scavenging

The headline use. In acylation, sulfonylation, silylation and phosphorylation, HCl is released and must be taken out of the way. Triethylamine binds it as the hydrochloride, which precipitates from most organic solvents and filters off.

RCOCl + R'OH + Et₃N → ester + Et₃N·HCl

Base catalysis

Catalyses esterification, transesterification, aldol and Knoevenagel condensations, and epoxy and urethane cure. Because it is not consumed, a few mole percent is often enough.

pKa 10.75 at 25 °C

Foundry cold-box catalysis

Dosed as a vapour in carrier gas, it cures a phenolic urethane core binder in seconds at room temperature. This is one of the largest single industrial outlets for the product.

vapour-phase cure, seconds

Salt formation

Forms triethylammonium salts with mineral and organic acids. These are used to solubilise acidic actives, as phase-transfer intermediates and as buffer components in preparative chromatography.

Et₃N + HCl → Et₃NH⁺Cl⁻

Dehydrohalogenation

Strips HX from alkyl halides to form alkenes, and from acid chlorides to generate ketenes in situ — a standard method in cycloaddition and beta-lactam chemistry.

R–CH₂CH₂X + Et₃N → alkene

Quaternisation

Alkyl halides attack the lone pair to give tetraalkylammonium salts, used as phase-transfer catalysts, electrolytes and antistatic additives.

Et₃N + R–X → R(Et)₃N⁺X⁻

Chromatography modifier

Added at low concentration to HPLC mobile phases to suppress peak tailing on basic analytes, and as triethylammonium acetate buffer in oligonucleotide purification.

mobile-phase additive

What it will not do

With no N–H bond, triethylamine does not form amides, ureas, carbamates, imines or sulfonamides. If your step needs any of those, you want diethylamine or ethylamine instead — and we will say so.

no N–H, no acylation

Process notes. Neutralisation is exothermic, so add triethylamine under control and keep cooling available. The hydrochloride is only sparingly soluble in most organic solvents, which is useful for filtration but can block a transfer line if the slurry is allowed to settle. Water content matters in acid chloride work, and the inverse water solubility means an aqueous wash behaves differently hot and cold — plan the work-up temperature deliberately.

Discuss your process
How it is made

From ethanol and ammonia to a finished drum

Practically all commercial triethylamine comes from a catalytic amination route. Knowing how it is made explains why the specification always controls diethylamine and water — they come from the same plant.

Stage 1

Feedstock

Ethanol and ammonia are vaporised and mixed, with the feed ratio set to favour the fully substituted product.

Stage 2

Catalytic amination

The mixture passes over an acidic alumina, zeolite or metal-promoted catalyst at elevated temperature and pressure.

Stage 3

Mixed amines

The reactor delivers mono-, di- and triethylamine together with unreacted ammonia, ethanol and water.

Stage 4

Separation

A distillation train, including an extractive column to break the azeotropes, splits the three ethylamines. Off-spec cuts and unreacted feed are recycled to the reactor.

Stage 5

Finishing

Product is dried to the water specification, tested, then filled into cans, drums or totes under nitrogen and labelled for dispatch.

Why the impurity profile matters

Triethylamine is bought precisely because it has no N–H bond, so the impurity that matters most is the one that does. Residual diethylamine is a secondary amine: it will react with your acid chloride, isocyanate or sulfonyl chloride and produce an amide impurity in the product the scavenger was supposed to stay out of. At 0.5 percent that is a real peak in a chromatogram, which is why tighter grades carry a lower limit.

Water is the second number to watch, for the same reason: it destroys the electrophile before your chemistry happens. If your step is sensitive to either, say so at enquiry stage and we will match the batch rather than send the standard commercial cut.

Storage life and colour

In sealed original packing, stored cool and out of sunlight, triethylamine is normally used within twelve months, and we recommend a re-check of assay, water and colour after that before a critical batch. The material does not "go off" so much as drift: air and carbon dioxide ingress form carbonate and raise the APHA colour, and repeated opening of a part-used drum is the usual cause.

Keep drums closed between draws, blanket bulk tanks with nitrogen where you can, and avoid storing part-used packs next to a heat source. A retained sample of each batch is held here, so if a consignment is ever queried we can test against the original.

Grades and specification

Four grades, matched to your process

Tell us the step you are running and how much water and secondary amine it tolerates, and we will confirm the grade. Commercial grade covers most production use; tighter grades exist for regulated and moisture-sensitive work.

Choosing a base

Triethylamine or something else?

Most enquiries here are really a question about which base to scavenge acid with. Triethylamine is the default for good reasons, but it is not always the right answer — this is the honest comparison.

Triethylamine fits when…

  • You need a cheap, strong base in stoichiometric quantity.
  • The hydrochloride can be filtered or washed out cleanly.
  • Excess base can be stripped, because it boils at 89.5 °C.
  • You are catalysing a urethane, epoxy or foundry binder cure.

Look elsewhere when…

  • Your step needs an N–H bond — use diethylamine or ethylamine.
  • The base itself is being alkylated and forming a quat impurity.
  • A weaker base would give better selectivity.
  • The reaction is biphasic and an inorganic base is cheaper.

Practical points

  • Budget slightly over one equivalent per equivalent of acid released.
  • Keep the salt slurry moving — it settles and blocks lines.
  • Watch water content in acid chloride work.
  • Remember the inverse water solubility during a hot wash.

A warning about "TEA". In the chemical trade those three letters are used for both triethylamine and triethanolamine, CAS 102-71-6, which is an entirely different product — a viscous, high-boiling amino alcohol used in cement grinding aids and cosmetics, not a volatile flammable base. The same trap sits on the other two: DEA can mean diethanolamine or diethylamine, and MEA can mean monoethanolamine or monoethylamine. Always write the full chemical name with the CAS number on the enquiry and the purchase order.

Applications

Where triethylamine is used

Most triethylamine consumption sits in two places: as an acid scavenger in pharmaceutical and agrochemical synthesis, and as the gaseous catalyst in foundry core making. Here is the full picture, sector by sector.

Pharmaceuticals and APIs

The standard base for acylation, sulfonylation, silylation and peptide coupling steps, for salt formation and pH adjustment, and as a mobile-phase modifier in analytical and preparative chromatography.

Foundry core making

The amine cold-box process uses triethylamine vapour to cure phenolic urethane binders in seconds, producing dimensionally accurate sand cores for automotive and engineering castings.

Agrochemicals

An acid binder in the manufacture of herbicide, insecticide and fungicide actives, and a base used to form water-soluble salts for liquid formulations.

Polyurethane and coatings

A catalyst for flexible foam, adhesives and coatings, an amine neutraliser for water-borne resin systems, and a curing accelerator in epoxy and acrylic chemistry.

Quaternary ammonium compounds

Alkylated to give tetraalkylammonium salts used as phase-transfer catalysts, electrolytes for capacitors and batteries, and antistatic and conditioning additives.

Water treatment and industrial fluids

An intermediate for corrosion inhibitors and scale control chemistry, and a pH regulator in metalworking fluids and industrial cleaning formulations.

Dyes, textiles and paper

Used as an acid binder in dye and pigment synthesis, as a levelling and fixing auxiliary, and in the chemistry behind sizing and wet-end additives.

Laboratory and analytical use

A standard reagent base on every synthetic bench, a peak-tailing suppressor in reversed-phase HPLC, and the amine in triethylammonium acetate buffer for oligonucleotide purification.

Downstream chemistry

What triethylamine makes possible

Unlike the primary and secondary amines, triethylamine is mostly consumed as a reagent rather than built into a product. These are the derivatives it does form, and the product classes it enables.

Handling, storage and safety

Highly flammable, corrosive and worth respecting

Triethylamine has a flash point around −11 °C and a vapour that is heavier than air. The notes below are a summary for planning only — always work to the Safety Data Sheet supplied with your consignment and your own site risk assessment.

Storage

  • Flammable-liquid store: cool, dry, well ventilated, away from direct sun and heat.
  • Keep containers tightly closed; nitrogen blanketing is preferred for bulk tanks.
  • Segregate from acids, oxidising agents, halogens and hypochlorites.
  • Bund the area and keep a spill kit with absorbent and neutralising material nearby.

Materials of construction

  • Stainless steel, carbon steel and HDPE are generally suitable.
  • Avoid copper, copper alloys, brass, zinc and galvanised surfaces — amines attack them.
  • Use gaskets and seals rated for amines, such as PTFE.
  • Earth and bond all equipment when transferring; vapour is heavier than air and travels.

Personal protection

  • Chemical splash goggles and a face shield when decanting or sampling.
  • Chemical-resistant gloves, apron and closed footwear.
  • Local exhaust ventilation; respiratory protection where vapour may build up.
  • Eyewash and safety shower within reach of the handling point — vapour can cause temporary blurred vision.

Testing

What we check, and how

The numbers on a Certificate of Analysis are only useful if you know how they were produced. These are the methods behind the figures on ours, and the checks worth repeating at your own goods-inward.

Gas chromatography

Separates triethylamine from diethylamine, monoethylamine and ammonia in one run. The diethylamine number is the one your process chemist will look at first.

Karl Fischer

Water determination, which for acid chloride and isocyanate chemistry often decides the yield before any other variable.

Acid–base titration

An independent check on total amine content, useful as a quick goods-inward confirmation before a drum is released to production.

Distillation range

A boiling range of 88 to 91 °C confirms identity and shows up lighter amines or solvent carry-over.

APHA colour

A visual platinum–cobalt comparison. A rising colour value is the earliest sign that a pack has been exposed to air or held too long.

Density and refractive index

Fast confirmation that the material is what the label says, and a simple way to spot dilution or the wrong pack.

Non-volatile matter and iron

Gravimetric residue and trace metal checks, which matter for catalytic steps and for any product going into a regulated formulation.

Retained samples

A sample from every dispatched batch is held here, so a query months later can be settled against the original material rather than an argument.

Third-party testing

Where your customer or regulator needs an independent result, we can arrange analysis at a NABL-accredited laboratory before dispatch.

Why buy from us

What you get besides the chemical

Triethylamine is a commodity on a price list and a headache in a warehouse. What separates suppliers is the grade flexibility, the paperwork and the answer you get when something is not routine.

One source for the amine list

Triethylamine sits alongside the other ethylamines, methylamines, ethanolamines and fatty amines we supply. Your purchase team raises one enquiry, compares one quote and manages one vendor record instead of six.

The diethylamine limit taken seriously

The secondary amine impurity is the one that shows up as an amide in your product, so it is quoted and certified against your limit rather than left at a generic commercial figure.

Paperwork that clears first time

COA, SDS, correct HSN and HS codes, dangerous goods declarations and certificates of origin are prepared with the consignment, not chased afterwards by your logistics team.

Foundry and pharma both served

Technical grade for cold-box core making and tighter grades for regulated synthesis come from the same vendor record, so one supplier covers both plants.

Scheduled repeat supply

Once we know your monthly draw we hold and release material on a schedule, so you carry less inventory of a highly flammable product than you otherwise would.

Someone who knows the chemistry

Describe the reaction rather than the product code and we will tell you which grade fits — and say so plainly when a different base would serve you better.

Buying guide

How to write an enquiry that gets a firm price

Most delays in quoting triethylamine come from a missing line in the enquiry, not from availability. Send these eight details and a firm price usually comes back the same day.

Include in your enquiry

  • Full name and CAS. Triethylamine, CAS 121-44-8 — never just the initials.
  • Grade. Technical, commercial, low-water, LR, AR or HPLC-suitable.
  • Water and diethylamine limits. The two numbers that decide the grade.
  • Quantity. Per dispatch and per month, so packing can be planned.
  • Pack size. Can, drum, IBC or bulk, and whether packs are returnable.
  • Destination. Delivery address for road, or port and Incoterm for export.
  • Documents. Anything beyond COA and SDS that your site or customs needs.
  • Frequency. One-off trial, monthly offtake or an annual contract.

Mistakes that cost money

  • Writing "TEA". It also means triethanolamine, a completely different product.
  • Buying TEA for an amide step. There is no N–H bond, so the reaction cannot work.
  • Ignoring the diethylamine limit. That impurity does form amides, in your product.
  • Under-dosing the base. Budget slightly over one equivalent per equivalent of acid released.
  • Using brass or copper fittings. Amines attack copper alloys; the pump fails, not the chemical.
  • Letting the hydrochloride settle. The salt slurry blocks transfer lines if it is not kept moving.
  • Forgetting the inverse water solubility. A wash that works cold can separate differently hot.
  • Ordering at the last minute. Dangerous goods bookings and permits take longer than ordinary freight.

Not sure of some of it yet? Send what you have. A description of the reaction step and an approximate monthly volume is enough for us to come back with a recommended grade, a pack plan and an indicative price.

A measure of acid strength. For an amine it is quoted for the conjugate acid; about 10.75 here means a strong base.

Triethylamine FAQ

Short answers to what purchase, plant and QC teams ask us most about this product. Anything else, ask us directly.

What is triethylamine used for?
Mostly as an acid scavenger and base catalyst in pharmaceutical, agrochemical and fine chemical synthesis, and as the vapour-phase catalyst in the foundry amine cold-box core-making process. It is also used in polyurethane and coating catalysis, quaternary ammonium manufacture, corrosion inhibitor packages, dye synthesis, and as an HPLC mobile-phase modifier.
Is triethylamine the same as triethanolamine?
No, and this is the most common mix-up in the family. Triethylamine (CAS 121-44-8) is a volatile, highly flammable liquid base boiling at 89.5 °C. Triethanolamine (CAS 102-71-6) is a viscous, high-boiling amino alcohol used in cement grinding aids, cosmetics and metalworking fluids. Both get shortened to "TEA", so always write the full name and CAS number on the order.
Why is triethylamine the default acid scavenger?
Three reasons. It is a strong base with a conjugate acid pKa near 10.75, so it takes up HCl reliably. It has no N–H bond, so it cannot be acylated and cannot end up in the product. And its hydrochloride is poorly soluble in most organic solvents, so it drops out and filters off, while excess amine strips away at 89.5 °C. Cost per mole is low, which settles the argument for routine work.
In which grades do you supply triethylamine?
Technical grade at 99% and above for foundry and general catalysis, commercial grade at 99.5% and above for pharmaceutical and agrochemical synthesis, a low-water grade for acid chloride and isocyanate chemistry, and LR, AR or HPLC-suitable laboratory grades in small packs.
How pure is your triethylamine, and what is controlled?
Assay is typically 99.5% and above, with diethylamine at 0.3% maximum, monoethylamine at 0.1% maximum, water at 0.2% maximum by Karl Fischer, APHA colour of 15 or less and a distillation range of 88 to 91 °C. If your process needs a tighter water or diethylamine limit, state it at enquiry and we will quote against your specification.
Why does the diethylamine content matter so much?
Because diethylamine is a secondary amine with an N–H bond, and that is precisely what triethylamine is chosen for not having. In an acylation the diethylamine present will react with your acid chloride and produce an N,N-diethyl amide impurity in the product. At a few tenths of a percent that is a visible peak, which is why regulated work specifies a tighter limit.
Which pack sizes are available?
25 litre tinplate cans and HDPE carboys for trials, 200 litre MS drums holding about 145 kg net for production use, 1000 L IBC totes for weekly consumption, and ISO tanks or road tankers for bulk foundry and plant supply. Laboratory grades are available in 2.5 L, 5 L and 25 L packs.
How should triethylamine be stored and handled?
Treat it as a highly flammable liquid: cool, dry, well-ventilated flammable-liquid store, containers closed, area bunded, no ignition sources, and equipment earthed and bonded during transfer. Keep it away from acids, oxidisers, halogens and hypochlorites. Use stainless steel, carbon steel or HDPE and avoid copper, brass, zinc and galvanised surfaces. Handle with splash goggles, chemical-resistant gloves and an apron, with local exhaust ventilation, an eyewash and a safety shower nearby.
Is triethylamine hazardous to transport?
Yes. It ships under UN 1296 as a Class 3 flammable liquid with a subsidiary Class 8 corrosive risk, packing group II. Packs are labelled accordingly and export consignments go in UN-specification packaging with the correct hazard labelling and paperwork.
What is the HS code for triethylamine?
Triethylamine is classified under harmonised heading 2921 19, which covers other acyclic monoamines and their derivatives. National tariffs add a further two to four digits, and the full code for your destination is stated on the export documents and on the domestic invoice so GST input credit and customs clearance are not held up.
Why does my triethylamine solution go cloudy when it warms up?
Because its solubility in water falls as temperature rises, which is the opposite of most chemicals. A solution that is clear in a cold vessel can separate into two phases on warming and clear again on cooling. It is not a quality problem, but it does mean the temperature of an aqueous wash should be chosen deliberately rather than left to the weather.
What documents come with an order?
Every dispatch carries a batch-wise Certificate of Analysis, the Safety Data Sheet, HSN details on the invoice, and labels showing the grade, net weight, batch number, manufacturing date and UN number. Export orders also carry the shipping documentation for the destination.
Do you supply trial quantities of triethylamine?
Yes. A 25 litre can or a small laboratory pack can be arranged so your team can qualify the material before placing a regular order. Request a sample with your application and water-limit details.
What is the shelf life of triethylamine?
In sealed original packing kept cool and out of sunlight, twelve months is the normal working figure. The material does not spoil so much as drift — air and carbon dioxide ingress raise the APHA colour and form carbonate, and moisture picks up from a part-used drum — so keep packs closed between draws and re-check assay, water and colour before a critical batch from older stock.
Do you also supply triethylamine hydrochloride?
Yes, triethylamine hydrochloride (CAS 554-68-7) can be supplied on request. It is the solid salt form, used as a reagent and catalyst in synthesis and easier to weigh and store than the liquid. Ask for it by name and quantity and we will quote pack sizes and lead time.
What is the minimum order quantity and the usual lead time?
A single 25 litre can is enough to start for trial and qualification work; production orders normally move in drums, IBC totes, container loads or ISO tanks. Ex-stock domestic dispatches typically leave within a few working days of order confirmation, and export or made-to-specification campaigns need longer depending on packing, permits and shipping schedules. We confirm the lead time on the quotation.
Which materials can I use for pumps, pipework and storage?
Stainless steel, carbon steel and HDPE are generally suitable, with PTFE gaskets and seals. Avoid copper, brass, bronze, zinc and galvanised surfaces — amines attack copper alloys, and the usual symptom is a failed pump or discoloured product rather than any problem with the chemical itself. Earth and bond equipment during transfer, because the vapour is flammable and heavier than air.
Which countries do you supply triethylamine to?
We ship worldwide. Regular destinations include the Middle East and Africa, South and South East Asia, East Asia, Australia and New Zealand, Europe and the CIS, and North and South America, alongside domestic supply throughout India. Shipments move in container loads or ISO tanks through Nhava Sheva and Mundra, packed to UN specification with the correct hazard labelling, and we quote on EXW, FOB, CFR, CIF or DAP terms.
