What it is

N,N-Dimethylethanolamine at a glance

N,N-Dimethylethanolamine, usually shortened to DMEA and also called DMAE, deanol or 2-(dimethylamino)ethanol, is a tertiary amine with two methyl groups and one hydroxyethyl group on the nitrogen. It is a strong base, fully miscible with water and most organic solvents, and noticeably volatile.

It is a clear, colourless liquid with an amine odour, boiling at about 134 °C and freezing far below normal temperatures. Its flash point is about 39 °C, so DMEA is both corrosive and flammable — it ships as Class 8 with a Class 3 subsidiary risk and needs flammable-liquid controls on site.

DMEA is made by reacting ethylene oxide with dimethylamine and purifying the product by distillation. Because it is a tertiary amine it does not form amides or carbamates, but its hydroxyl group is reactive, which is how it becomes dimethylaminoethyl acrylate and methacrylate monomers.

Why buyers choose N,N-dimethylethanolamine

  • Volatile neutralising amine. Neutralises acrylic and alkyd binders in waterborne paints, then leaves the film as it dries.
  • Polyurethane catalyst. A tertiary amine that catalyses the urethane and blowing reactions, and reacts into the polymer through its hydroxyl.
  • Monomer raw material. The hydroxyl makes DMAEA and DMAEMA, the basis of cationic flocculants and coatings.
  • Low freezing point. Liquid in all normal climates — no heated storage.

Chemistry and reactivity

How N,N-dimethylethanolamine behaves in a formulation or reaction

A tertiary nitrogen and a free hydroxyl explain what DMEA is bought for: neutralising and catalysing without reacting at the nitrogen, while the hydroxyl gives esters, ethers and monomers.

Resin neutralisation

Neutralises carboxylic acid groups on acrylic, alkyd and polyester binders to make them water-dispersible; the amine then evaporates as the film dries.

binder–COOH + DMEA → salt

Polyurethane catalysis

Catalyses the isocyanate–polyol and isocyanate–water reactions in foams and coatings; its hydroxyl reacts into the polymer, reducing emissions.

R–NCO + R′–OH → urethane

Transesterification to monomers

Reacts with methyl acrylate or methyl methacrylate to give dimethylaminoethyl acrylate (DMAEA) and methacrylate (DMAEMA).

MMA + DMEA → DMAEMA + MeOH

Quaternisation

The nitrogen reacts with methyl chloride or other alkylating agents to give quaternary ammonium compounds, including cationic monomers and choline-type salts.

R₃N + CH₃Cl → R₃N⁺CH₃ Cl⁻

Etherification

The alkoxide or chloride derivative is used to attach a dimethylaminoethyl group to pharmaceutical molecules.

R–X + DMEA → R–OCH₂CH₂N(CH₃)₂

Neutralising amine

Volatile enough to travel with steam, DMEA raises condensate pH in boiler and steam systems.

pKa about 9.2

Acid scavenging

Mops up acids generated in reactions and in coatings, without forming amides.

R₃N + HCl → R₃NH⁺Cl⁻

Ion-exchange resins

Used to functionalise resins and polymers with tertiary amine and quaternary groups.

polymer–CH₂Cl + DMEA → quat

Process notes. DMEA is flammable as well as corrosive: earth and bond equipment, keep ignition sources away and use flammable-liquid storage. Neutralisation and quaternisation are exothermic. In coatings, its volatility is a feature — choose a less volatile amine if you need it to stay in the film.

Discuss your process
How it is made

From ethylene oxide and dimethylamine to a finished drum

Practically all commercial DMEA comes from the same route. Knowing how it is made explains why the specification controls water, colour and related amines.

Stage 1

Feedstock

Ethylene oxide is fed into dimethylamine, with a slight excess of amine.

Stage 2

Reaction

The exothermic reaction runs under pressure and controlled temperature.

Stage 3

Crude product

The reactor delivers DMEA with small amounts of higher ethoxylates, unreacted dimethylamine and water.

Stage 4

Separation

Dimethylamine is recovered and recycled, and distillation purifies the DMEA.

Stage 5

Finishing

DMEA is tested for purity, water and colour, then filled into UN drums, totes or tankers under nitrogen.

Why the impurity profile matters

The real quality question is "what else came with it". Water matters most for polyurethane and monomer users, because it reacts with isocyanates and interferes with transesterification. Higher ethoxylates and other amines change catalytic activity and odour.

For coatings and monomers, colour and odour matter too. If your use is sensitive to any of these, say so at enquiry stage and we will match the batch.

Storage life and colour

In sealed original packing, stored cool and away from heat and ignition sources, DMEA is normally used within twelve months, and we recommend a re-check of assay, water and colour after that before a critical batch.

Keep drums closed between draws and blanket bulk tanks with nitrogen — this limits moisture, CO₂ pick-up and flammable vapour in the headspace. A retained sample of each batch is held here, so any query can be tested against the original.

NMEA, DMEA and DEEA

The alkylethanolamines are made by adding ethylene oxide to methylamine, dimethylamine or diethylamine instead of ammonia. The alkyl groups on the nitrogen change basicity, volatility, flammability and what the amine can still react with.

What we check, and how

The numbers on a Certificate of Analysis are only useful if you know how they were produced. These are the methods behind the figures on ours, and the checks worth repeating at your own goods-inward.

Gas chromatography

Separates N,N-dimethylethanolamine from the related amines made in the same reactor, and gives the assay and impurity profile that matter most to your formulation.

Acid–base titration

An independent check on total amine content, useful as a quick goods-inward confirmation before a drum is released to production.

Karl Fischer

Water determination, which matters for anhydrous grades and confirms strength on aqueous grades.

APHA colour

A visual platinum–cobalt comparison. A rising colour value is the earliest sign that a pack has been exposed to air, heat or held too long.

Density and refractive index

Fast confirmation that the material is what the label says, and a simple way to spot dilution or the wrong pack.

Distillation range

Confirms the boiling range is tight around 134 °C, which flags light or heavy contaminants before a drum is released.

Retained samples

A sample from every dispatched batch is held here, so a query months later can be settled against the original material rather than an argument.

Batch traceability

Batch number on the label ties back to the COA, the test record and the supply lot, which is what your auditor will ask to see.

Third-party testing

Where your customer or regulator needs an independent result, we can arrange analysis at a NABL-accredited laboratory before dispatch.

Why buy from us

What you get besides the chemical

N,N-Dimethylethanolamine is a commodity on a price list. What separates suppliers is grade flexibility, the paperwork and the answer you get when something is not routine.

One source for the whole amine list

N,N-Dimethylethanolamine sits alongside more than fifty other amines we stock, from ethanolamines to fatty amines. Your purchase team raises one enquiry, compares one quote and manages one vendor record instead of six.

The grade you need, not just the easy one

Different purities and supply forms of N,N-dimethylethanolamine are available, so you are not forced to redesign a formulation around the only grade your supplier happens to carry.

Paperwork that clears first time

COA, SDS, correct HSN and HS codes, transport declarations and certificates of origin are prepared with the consignment, not chased afterwards by your logistics team.

Specification matching

Tell us your limits on purity, related amines, water or colour and we quote against them, rather than sending the standard cut and letting your QC department find out.

Scheduled repeat supply

Once we know your monthly draw we hold and release material on a schedule, so you carry less inventory than you otherwise would.

Someone who knows the chemistry

Describe the application rather than the product code and we will tell you which grade fits — and say so plainly when a different amine would serve you better.

How to write an enquiry that gets a firm price

Most delays in quoting N,N-dimethylethanolamine come from a missing line in the enquiry, not from availability. Send these eight details and a firm price usually comes back the same day.

Include in your enquiry

  • Full name and CAS. N,N-Dimethylethanolamine, CAS 108-01-0 — never just the initials.
  • Grade. Commercial ≥ 99.5%, low-water, or LR / AR.
  • Quantity and basis. State whether the tonnage is on product weight or on 100% active basis.
  • Specification limits. Any tighter limit on related amines, water or colour your process needs.
  • Pack size. UN drum, IBC, tanker or ISO tank.
  • Destination. Delivery address for road, or port and Incoterm for export.
  • Documents. Anything beyond COA and SDS that your site, customer or customs needs.
  • Frequency. One-off trial, monthly offtake or an annual contract.

Mistakes that cost money

  • Writing just "DMEA" or "DMAE". Write the full name and CAS; similar initials cover different amines.
  • Confusing DMEA with MDEA. N-methyldiethanolamine is a different, non-flammable gas-treating amine.
  • Ignoring the flash point. DMEA is flammable; store and transfer it as a flammable liquid.
  • Ignoring water content. Water reacts with isocyanates and upsets monomer production.
  • Using brass or copper fittings. Amines attack copper alloys.
  • Storing part-used drums open. Moisture and CO₂ pick-up change assay and colour.
  • Leaving out the end use. Export documentation needs the application.
  • Ordering at the last minute. Flammable, corrosive bookings take longer than ordinary freight.

Not sure of some of it yet? Send what you have. A description of the application and an approximate monthly volume is enough for us to come back with a recommended grade, a pack plan and an indicative price.

Questions buyers ask

N,N-Dimethylethanolamine FAQ

Short answers to what purchase, plant and QC teams ask us most about this product. Anything else, ask us directly.

What is N,N-dimethylethanolamine used for?
Mainly as a neutralising amine in waterborne coatings and inks, as a polyurethane catalyst, and as the raw material for dimethylaminoethyl acrylate and methacrylate monomers used in cationic flocculants. It is also used in boiler and steam treatment, pharmaceutical synthesis, ion-exchange resins and personal care.
Is DMEA the same as DMAE and deanol?
Yes. DMEA, DMAE, deanol and 2-(dimethylamino)ethanol are names for the same compound, CAS 108-01-0. It should not be confused with MDEA (N-methyldiethanolamine), which is a different gas-treating amine.
Which grades of DMEA do you supply?
A commercial grade of 99.5% minimum, a low-water grade for monomer production and moisture-sensitive steps, and LR and AR laboratory grades. Tell us your application and we will confirm the right one.
How pure is your N,N-dimethylethanolamine?
Commercial grade is typically 99.5% minimum by GC, with water at 0.2% maximum and APHA colour of 15 or less. Tighter water and colour limits can be quoted against your specification.
Is DMEA flammable?
Yes. DMEA has a flash point of about 39 °C, so it is a flammable liquid as well as a corrosive. Store it in a flammable-liquid area, earth and bond equipment during transfer, and keep ignition sources away.
How should DMEA be stored and handled?
Store in a cool, ventilated flammable-liquid area with containers closed and bulk tanks nitrogen blanketed, away from acids and oxidisers. Use stainless or carbon steel and avoid copper, brass, zinc, galvanised surfaces and aluminium. Handle with splash goggles, a face shield, chemical-resistant gloves and flame-retardant clothing, with an eyewash and safety shower nearby.
Is DMEA hazardous to transport?
Yes. It ships under UN 2051, 2-Dimethylaminoethanol, Class 8 with a Class 3 subsidiary risk, Packing Group II. Packs carry corrosion and flame pictograms, and export consignments go in UN-specification packaging with a dangerous goods declaration.
Which pack sizes are available?
N,N-Dimethylethanolamine is supplied in about 175 kg UN-approved steel drums, IBC totes of about 850 kg, tankers and ISO tanks. Laboratory grades are available from 500 mL to 25 L.
What is the HS code for N,N-dimethylethanolamine?
N,N-Dimethylethanolamine is classified under harmonised heading 2922 19, the heading for other amino-alcohols and their salts. The same heading is the basis for national codes worldwide and appears as HSN 2922 19 on Indian invoices. Your country's full eight or ten digit code is stated on the export documents so customs clearance is not held up.
What documents come with an order?
Every dispatch carries a batch-wise Certificate of Analysis, the Safety Data Sheet, HSN details on the invoice, and labels showing the grade, net weight, batch number, manufacturing date and any transport hazard marking. Export orders also carry the shipping documentation for the destination.
Do you supply trial quantities of N,N-dimethylethanolamine?
Yes. A single drum or a small laboratory pack can be arranged so your team can qualify the material before placing a regular order. Request a sample with your application details.
Which countries do you supply N,N-dimethylethanolamine to?
We ship worldwide. Regular destinations include the Middle East and Africa, South and South East Asia, East Asia, Australia and New Zealand, Europe and the CIS, and North and South America, alongside domestic supply throughout India. Shipments move in container loads through Nhava Sheva and Mundra, and we quote on EXW, FOB, CFR, CIF or DAP terms. Send the grade, quantity and destination port and we will confirm lead time, freight and documentation.
What export documents do you provide?
A commercial invoice, packing list, certificate of origin, batch-wise Certificate of Analysis, Safety Data Sheet, any dangerous goods or non-hazardous transport declaration, and the bill of lading or airway bill. Country-specific declarations such as REACH, non-GMO or allergen statements can be issued on request — tell us what your customs broker needs at enquiry stage.
What is the minimum order quantity and the usual lead time?
A single drum is enough to start for trial and qualification work; production orders normally move in drums, IBC totes or container loads. Ex-stock domestic dispatches typically leave within a few working days of order confirmation, and export or made-to-specification orders need longer depending on packing, documentation and shipping schedules. We confirm the lead time on the quotation.
