What it is

Monoethanolamine at a glance

Monoethanolamine, usually shortened to MEA and also called ethanolamine or 2-aminoethanol, carries a primary amine and a primary alcohol on a two-carbon chain. That combination gives it the reactivity of a strong organic base with the water-miscibility and low volatility of a glycol.

It is a clear, viscous, hygroscopic liquid with a mild ammoniacal odour. It freezes at about 10 °C, so in cold climates and air-conditioned stores it needs warm storage or a heated line. It absorbs carbon dioxide and water from the air, which is why sealed packing and nitrogen blanketing matter for colour and assay.

Industrially, MEA is made by reacting ethylene oxide with aqueous ammonia. The reaction gives monoethanolamine, diethanolamine and triethanolamine together, and the ratio is steered by how much ammonia is used. The three are separated by vacuum distillation, which is why every MEA specification controls the DEA content.

Why buyers choose monoethanolamine

  • Highest amine per kilogram. At 61.08 g/mol it carries more amine per kilo than any other ethanolamine — the reason it dominates CO₂ capture.
  • Strong, low-volatility base. pKa 9.50 neutralises fatty and sulfonic acids cleanly without the odour or flammability of light amines.
  • Two reactive ends. Amine and hydroxyl groups both react, giving amides, esters, oxazolines and ethyleneamines.
  • Well-defined specification. Purity, DEA, water and colour are all controlled and reported.

Chemistry and reactivity

How monoethanolamine behaves in a formulation or reaction

Two groups explain almost everything MEA is used for: a primary amine that is a strong, reactive base, and a hydroxyl group that keeps it water-miscible and gives a second reactive site. These are the jobs process chemists and formulators buy it for.

Acid gas absorption

Reacts reversibly with CO₂ and H₂S in an aqueous solution, forming carbamate and bisulfide that release again on heating. This is the basis of amine gas treating and post-combustion carbon capture.

2 RNH₂ + CO₂ ⇌ RNHCOO⁻ + RNH₃⁺

Salt formation

Neutralises fatty acids, sulfonic acids and acidic herbicides to give water-soluble MEA salts — the route to MEA-LABSA in liquid detergents and to amine salts in agrochemical formulations.

RSO₃H + MEA → RSO₃⁻ MEAH⁺

Ethanolamide formation

Condenses with fatty acids or methyl esters to give fatty monoethanolamides, the thickeners and foam boosters used in shampoos and detergents.

RCOOCH₃ + MEA → RCONHCH₂CH₂OH

Corrosion inhibition

Raises pH and forms protective amine soaps and borates, which is why it appears in metalworking fluids, boiler treatment and coolants.

pKa 9.50 at 25 °C

Formaldehyde condensation

Reacts with formaldehyde to give hexahydro-tris(hydroxyethyl)-triazine, a widely used biocide for metalworking fluids and oilfield water.

3 MEA + 3 HCHO → triazine

Reductive amination

With ammonia and hydrogen over a catalyst it gives ethylenediamine and higher ethyleneamines — the main non-solvent industrial route from MEA.

MEA + NH₃ → EDA + H₂O

Complexation

Forms soluble complexes with copper and other metals, used in copper-amine wood preservatives and in metal cleaning.

Cu²⁺ + n MEA → [Cu(MEA)ₙ]²⁺

Esterification and sulfation

The hydroxyl group reacts with acids; sulfation followed by sulfonation is the industrial route from MEA to taurine.

MEA + H₂SO₄ → H₂NCH₂CH₂OSO₃H

Process notes. Neutralisation and amidation are exothermic, so add MEA under control and keep cooling available. MEA freezes at about 10 °C — keep lines traced and drums warm rather than heating a drum locally. In gas-treating units, oxygen, heat and acid gases slowly degrade MEA into heat-stable salts; reclaiming or bleeding the solvent keeps capacity up.

Discuss your process
How it is made

From ethylene oxide and ammonia to a finished drum

Practically all commercial MEA comes from the same route. Knowing how it is made explains why the specification always controls diethanolamine, water and colour — they come from the same reactor and the same distillation train.

Stage 1

Feedstock

Ethylene oxide is fed into aqueous ammonia. A large ammonia excess pushes the product split towards monoethanolamine.

Stage 2

Reaction

The exothermic reaction runs in the liquid phase under pressure, with temperature controlled to limit by-products.

Stage 3

Mixed ethanolamines

The reactor delivers MEA, DEA and TEA together with unreacted ammonia and water.

Stage 4

Separation

Ammonia is stripped and recycled, water is removed, and a vacuum distillation train separates MEA, DEA and TEA.

Stage 5

Finishing

Product is tested for purity, water and colour, then filled into drums, totes or tankers, ideally under nitrogen.

Why the impurity profile matters

Because all three ethanolamines leave the reactor together, the real quality question is not simply "how much MEA" but "what else came with it". Residual diethanolamine is a secondary amine that can form nitrosamines in some formulations, and water dilutes the amine and affects freezing behaviour.

Colour matters too: MEA darkens with heat and air, and a high APHA number can show up in water-white detergents and cosmetics. If your downstream use is colour- or DEA-sensitive, say so at enquiry stage and we will match the batch rather than send the standard commercial cut.

Storage life and colour

In sealed original packing, stored between about 15 and 35 °C and out of sunlight, MEA is normally used within twelve months, and we recommend a re-check of assay and colour after that before a critical batch. The product does not "go off" so much as drift: air and carbon dioxide form carbamate and raise the colour, and repeated opening of a part-used drum is the usual cause.

Keep drums closed between draws, blanket bulk tanks with dry nitrogen, and use gentle, even warming if the product has frozen — never a local hot spot. A retained sample of each batch is held here, so if a consignment is ever queried we can test against the original.

Choosing the right grade

Pure MEA, low-freeze MEA or a different ethanolamine?

This is the most common question at enquiry stage, and the answer is decided by your application and your climate rather than by price. Use the table to narrow it down, then send us the application and we will confirm.

A warning about abbreviations. DEA can mean diethanolamine or diethylamine, and TEA can mean triethanolamine or triethylamine — completely different products with different hazards. Triethanolamine is also sold as TEA 85 (with about 15% DEA) and TEA 99, which behave differently in cosmetics and cement. Always write the full chemical name, CAS number and grade on the enquiry and the purchase order.

Applications

Where monoethanolamine is used

Most MEA consumption sits in gas treating, detergents and metalworking fluids, with a long tail of chemical synthesis. Here is the full picture, sector by sector.

Gas treating and carbon capture

The benchmark solvent for removing CO₂ and H₂S from natural gas, refinery gas, syngas and flue gas, typically at 15–30% in water. Also the reference amine in post-combustion carbon capture.

Detergents and cleaners

Neutralises linear alkylbenzene sulfonic acid and fatty acids to make MEA salts that stay soluble and clear in concentrated liquid detergents, dishwash and hard-surface cleaners.

Personal care

Used as a pH adjuster and to make fatty monoethanolamides — cocamide MEA and lauramide MEA — that thicken and stabilise foam in shampoos and body washes.

Metalworking fluids and lubricants

Provides reserve alkalinity, corrosion inhibition and emulsion stability in soluble oils and synthetic coolants, often as MEA borate.

Cement and construction

A component of cement grinding aids and concrete admixtures, usually blended with TEA and glycols.

Agrochemicals and wood preservation

Forms water-soluble salts of acidic herbicides, and carries copper into timber in copper-amine wood preservatives.

Pharmaceuticals and fine chemicals

A building block for APIs and intermediates, the starting material for taurine, and a feedstock for ethyleneamines, oxazolines and aziridine chemistry.

Textiles, leather and coatings

Used in textile softeners and finishing agents, leather processing, waterborne paint neutralisation and as a dispersant for pigments.

Downstream chemistry

What gets made from monoethanolamine

If you are mapping a value chain or looking for the product one step down from where you are, this is where monoethanolamine ends up. Several of these are chemicals we can also source for you.

Handling, storage and safety

Corrosive, hygroscopic and worth respecting

Monoethanolamine is a corrosive base that causes severe skin burns and eye damage, and it is harmful if swallowed, inhaled or absorbed through the skin. The notes below are a summary for planning only — always work to the Safety Data Sheet supplied with your consignment and your own site risk assessment.

Storage

  • Cool, dry, ventilated store, kept above about 15 °C to prevent freezing.
  • Keep containers closed; nitrogen blanketing is preferred for bulk tanks.
  • Segregate from acids, oxidising agents, halogenated compounds and nitrites.
  • Bund the area and keep a spill kit with absorbent material nearby.

Materials of construction

  • Stainless steel and carbon steel are generally suitable; HDPE for drums and totes.
  • Avoid copper, copper alloys, brass, zinc, galvanised surfaces and aluminium.
  • Use gaskets and seals rated for amines, such as PTFE.
  • Use low-heat, even trace heating; avoid local overheating that darkens the product.

Personal protection

  • Chemical splash goggles and a face shield when decanting or sampling.
  • Chemical-resistant gloves, apron and closed footwear.
  • Local exhaust ventilation where mists or vapour can form, especially when hot.
  • Eyewash and safety shower within reach of the handling point.

What we need from a new buyer

  • Company registration and tax details — VAT, EIN, GST or the equivalent in your country.
  • Consignee and delivery-site details, with a named technical or purchase contact.
  • The application the material goes into, so we can match the grade.
  • Any import permit or registration the destination country requires.

Who we supply

  • Manufacturers, formulators and processors buying for industrial use.
  • Research institutions, universities and accredited testing laboratories.
  • Registered traders and distributors serving the same industrial base.
  • Supply is business to business only — we do not sell to individuals.

Documentation we can issue

  • Dangerous goods declaration where applicable, or a non-hazardous transport statement.
  • Certificate of origin and chamber-attested export documents.
  • REACH, non-GMO, allergen and animal-origin-free statements on request.
  • Country-specific declarations where your customs broker asks for them.

Because MEA is a dangerous good, export bookings need correct UN packaging, labelling and a dangerous goods declaration, and some destinations require importer registration or a chemical inventory listing such as REACH. Tell us the destination at enquiry stage and we will confirm what is needed before the shipment is booked.

Testing

What we check, and how

The numbers on a Certificate of Analysis are only useful if you know how they were produced. These are the methods behind the figures on ours, and the checks worth repeating at your own goods-inward.

Gas chromatography

Separates monoethanolamine from the related amines made in the same reactor, and gives the assay and impurity profile that matter most to your formulation.

Acid–base titration

An independent check on total amine content, useful as a quick goods-inward confirmation before a drum is released to production.

Karl Fischer

Water determination, which matters for anhydrous grades and confirms strength on aqueous grades.

APHA colour

A visual platinum–cobalt comparison. A rising colour value is the earliest sign that a pack has been exposed to air, heat or held too long.

Density and refractive index

Fast confirmation that the material is what the label says, and a simple way to spot dilution or the wrong pack.

Freezing point

A quick check on purity: diethanolamine and water both depress MEA's freezing point, so a low reading flags contamination before a full GC run.

Retained samples

A sample from every dispatched batch is held here, so a query months later can be settled against the original material rather than an argument.

Batch traceability

Batch number on the label ties back to the COA, the test record and the supply lot, which is what your auditor will ask to see.

Third-party testing

Where your customer or regulator needs an independent result, we can arrange analysis at a NABL-accredited laboratory before dispatch.

Why buy from us

What you get besides the chemical

Monoethanolamine is a commodity on a price list. What separates suppliers is grade flexibility, the paperwork and the answer you get when something is not routine.

One source for the whole amine list

Monoethanolamine sits alongside more than fifty other amines we stock, from ethanolamines to fatty amines. Your purchase team raises one enquiry, compares one quote and manages one vendor record instead of six.

The grade you need, not just the easy one

Different purities and supply forms of monoethanolamine are available, so you are not forced to redesign a formulation around the only grade your supplier happens to carry.

Paperwork that clears first time

COA, SDS, correct HSN and HS codes, transport declarations and certificates of origin are prepared with the consignment, not chased afterwards by your logistics team.

Specification matching

Tell us your limits on purity, related amines, water or colour and we quote against them, rather than sending the standard cut and letting your QC department find out.

Scheduled repeat supply

Once we know your monthly draw we hold and release material on a schedule, so you carry less inventory than you otherwise would.

Someone who knows the chemistry

Describe the application rather than the product code and we will tell you which grade fits — and say so plainly when a different amine would serve you better.

How to write an enquiry that gets a firm price

Most delays in quoting monoethanolamine come from a missing line in the enquiry, not from availability. Send these eight details and a firm price usually comes back the same day.

Include in your enquiry

  • Full name and CAS. Monoethanolamine, CAS 141-43-5 — never just the initials.
  • Grade. 99% commercial, low-DEA, aqueous 85%, or LR / AR.
  • Quantity and basis. State whether the tonnage is on product weight or on 100% active basis.
  • Specification limits. Any tighter limit on related amines, water or colour your process needs.
  • Pack size. Drum, IBC, tanker or ISO tank, and whether your site has heated storage.
  • Destination. Delivery address for road, or port and Incoterm for export.
  • Documents. Anything beyond COA and SDS that your site, customer or customs needs.
  • Frequency. One-off trial, monthly offtake or an annual contract.

Mistakes that cost money

  • Writing just "ethanolamine". Specify mono-, di- or tri-; they behave very differently.
  • Ignoring the freezing point. MEA freezes at about 10 °C — a cold store means a solid drum on delivery.
  • Comparing prices across grades. An 85% aqueous MEA is not the same price per kilo of amine as 99%.
  • Ignoring DEA content. Two quotes at the same price can carry very different DEA, which matters in cosmetics.
  • Using brass or copper fittings. Ethanolamines attack copper alloys; the pump fails, not the chemical.
  • Storing part-used drums open. Air and carbon dioxide raise colour and form carbamate.
  • Overheating a frozen drum. Local heat darkens the product; warm gently and evenly.
  • Ordering at the last minute. Dangerous goods bookings take longer than ordinary freight.

Not sure of some of it yet? Send what you have. A description of the application and an approximate monthly volume is enough for us to come back with a recommended grade, a pack plan and an indicative price.

A 99% minimum commercial grade, a low-DEA and low-colour grade for personal care and pharma, an 85% aqueous low-freeze grade for cold-climate storage, and LR and AR laboratory grades. Tell us your application and we will confirm the right one.
What is the difference between MEA, DEA and TEA?
They differ by how many hydroxyethyl groups sit on the nitrogen. MEA has one and is a primary amine, DEA has two and is secondary, TEA has three and is tertiary. All three are made together from ethylene oxide and ammonia and separated by distillation. MEA is the strongest base and absorbs CO₂ fastest; TEA is the weakest base and is mainly used in cement, cosmetics and metalworking.
How pure is your monoethanolamine?
Commercial grade is typically 99.0% minimum by GC, with diethanolamine at 0.5% maximum, water at 0.3% maximum and APHA colour of 15 or less. If your process needs tighter limits on DEA, water or colour, state them at enquiry and we will quote against your specification.
Why has my MEA turned solid?
Monoethanolamine freezes at about 10.3 °C, so drums stored in a cold warehouse or shipped in winter can arrive solid. This does not harm the product. Warm the drum gently and evenly — in a warm room or with a drum heater set to a low temperature — and mix before use. Avoid local hot spots, which darken the product.
How should monoethanolamine be stored and handled?
Store in a dry, ventilated area kept above about 15 °C, with containers closed and bulk tanks nitrogen blanketed. Keep it away from acids, oxidisers and nitrites. Use stainless or carbon steel and avoid copper, brass, zinc, galvanised surfaces and aluminium. Handle with splash goggles, a face shield, chemical-resistant gloves and an apron, with an eyewash and safety shower nearby. Work to the SDS supplied with your consignment.
Is monoethanolamine hazardous to transport?
Yes. It is a Class 8 corrosive dangerous good shipped under UN 2491, Ethanolamine, Packing Group III. Packs carry the corrosion pictogram and export consignments go in UN-specification packaging with a dangerous goods declaration.
What concentration of MEA is used in gas treating?
Gas-treating units commonly run MEA at about 15–30% by weight in water, with the exact strength set by the licensor or plant design to balance capacity against corrosion. We supply 99% MEA for site dilution, and can discuss pre-diluted product where that suits your logistics.
Which pack sizes are available?
Monoethanolamine is supplied in about 210 kg HDPE or MS drums, 1000 kg IBC totes, road tankers and ISO tanks. Laboratory grades are available from 500 mL to 25 L.
What is the HS code for monoethanolamine?
Monoethanolamine is classified under harmonised heading 2922 11, the heading for monoethanolamine and its salts. The same heading is the basis for national codes worldwide and appears as HSN 2922 11 on Indian invoices. Your country's full eight or ten digit code is stated on the export documents so customs clearance is not held up.
What documents come with an order?
Every dispatch carries a batch-wise Certificate of Analysis, the Safety Data Sheet, HSN details on the invoice, and labels showing the grade, net weight, batch number, manufacturing date and any transport hazard marking. Export orders also carry the shipping documentation for the destination.
Do you supply trial quantities of monoethanolamine?
Yes. A single drum or a small laboratory pack can be arranged so your team can qualify the material before placing a regular order. Request a sample with your application details.
Which countries do you supply monoethanolamine to?
We ship worldwide. Regular destinations include the Middle East and Africa, South and South East Asia, East Asia, Australia and New Zealand, Europe and the CIS, and North and South America, alongside domestic supply throughout India. Shipments move in container loads through Nhava Sheva and Mundra, and we quote on EXW, FOB, CFR, CIF or DAP terms. Send the grade, quantity and destination port and we will confirm lead time, freight and documentation.
What export documents do you provide?
A commercial invoice, packing list, certificate of origin, batch-wise Certificate of Analysis, Safety Data Sheet, any dangerous goods or non-hazardous transport declaration, and the bill of lading or airway bill. Country-specific declarations such as REACH, non-GMO or allergen statements can be issued on request — tell us what your customs broker needs at enquiry stage.
What is the minimum order quantity and the usual lead time?
A single drum is enough to start for trial and qualification work; production orders normally move in drums, IBC totes or container loads. Ex-stock domestic dispatches typically leave within a few working days of order confirmation, and export or made-to-specification orders need longer depending on packing, documentation and shipping schedules. We confirm the lead time on the quotation.
Which Indian states do you deliver monoethanolamine to?
