Triazole intermediates
Ring building block for fine chemicals, pharmaceutical and agrochemical actives based on the aminotriazole core.
Amitrole · ATA · 3-AT · 1H-1,2,4-Triazol-3-amine · Aminotriazole
A small, water-soluble aminotriazole: four nitrogens in an 84 g/mol molecule. It is used as a ring building block for triazole chemistry, as the laboratory reagent 3-AT, and as a registered herbicide active in markets that still permit it. Supplied in 25 kg packs with COA and SDS.

Amitrole is made by condensing formic acid with aminoguanidine and purified by recrystallisation. The ring carries an exocyclic amine and three ring nitrogens, so it chelates several metals and is itself corrosive to iron, copper and aluminium in solution — plastic-lined handling equipment is preferred.
In the laboratory the same molecule is known as 3-AT, a competitive inhibitor used in yeast two-hybrid and histidine-selection work, and as a catalase inhibitor. Grade matters: reagent and technical qualities are not interchangeable.
Ring building block for fine chemicals, pharmaceutical and agrochemical actives based on the aminotriazole core.
Known as 3-AT; used in histidine-pathway selection and as a catalase inhibitor in biochemical work.
Chelating and corrosion-inhibiting additive in surface treatment and photographic chemistry.
Non-selective herbicide and cotton defoliant where local registration permits its use.

3-Amino-1,2,4-triazole, also called amitrole, is registered under CAS number 61-82-5, EC number 200-521-5, with the molecular formula C2H4N4 and a molecular weight of 84.08 g/mol.
It is used as a ring building block for triazole fine chemicals, as the laboratory reagent 3-AT in histidine-selection and catalase-inhibition work, in metal surface treatment and photographic chemistry, and as a non-selective herbicide active where local registration permits.
Yes. Amitrole, aminotriazole, ATA and 3-AT are all common names for the same substance, CAS 61-82-5.
It dissolves readily, around 280 g per litre at room temperature, giving a near-neutral solution with a pH of about 6.4 to 7.4 at 100 g/L.
It is suspected of damaging the unborn child and may affect the thyroid after prolonged exposure, so dust control, gloves, goggles and a documented risk assessment are required. It is also toxic to aquatic life, so spills must never reach drains.
