3-Amino-1-propanol

3-Aminopropan-1-ol · Propanolamine · 3-Hydroxypropylamine · 3-APOL

CAS156-87-6 Alkanolamine C3H9NO · 75.11 g/mol

The simplest linear propanolamine: an amine at one end, a hydroxyl at the other, three carbons apart. That spacing makes it a favourite molecular linker in pharmaceutical synthesis and a chain extender in polyurethane and dendrimer chemistry. Supplied in drums and IBCs with COA and SDS.

What 3-amino-1-propanol is

3-Amino-1-propanol is a bifunctional molecule with two independently addressable sites, so it is used wherever a short, flexible three-carbon bridge is needed between a nitrogen and an oxygen centre — selective O- or N-arylation and amidation routes rely on exactly that.

Note the melting point: it sets near 12 °C, so drums stored in a cool warehouse will solidify and need gentle warming before transfer. Plan for a heated transfer line in winter conditions.

Where it is used

Pharmaceutical synthesis

Molecular linker and precursor in selective O- or N-arylation and amidation routes to medicinally active compounds.

Polyurethanes

Chain extender and functionalising amine in polyurethane and poly(propyl ether imine) dendrimer preparation.

Corrosion inhibitors

Neutralising amine in metalworking fluids, coolants and boiler-water treatment.

Surfactants & auxiliaries

Intermediate for textile auxiliaries, emulsifiers and specialty esters.

Handling, packing and shipping

  • Corrosive — causes severe skin burns and serious eye damage; harmful if swallowed or in contact with skin (H302, H312, H314).
  • Neutralises acids exothermically; keep away from acids, acid chlorides and strong oxidisers.
  • Hygroscopic — keep containers tightly closed and dry to protect assay and colour.
  • Solidifies below about 12 °C; warm gently and uniformly, never with direct flame.
  • Use chemical goggles, nitrile gloves, apron and local exhaust ventilation when transferring.

Packing

200 kg HDPE or MS drums, 1000 L IBCs and 25 kg carboys. Heated or insulated despatch available for winter shipments.

Transport: UN 2735, Amines, liquid, corrosive, n.o.s., Class 8. Packing group varies by supplier classification — confirm on the current SDS before despatch.

Common questions

What is the CAS number of 3-amino-1-propanol?

3-Amino-1-propanol is registered under CAS number 156-87-6, EC number 205-864-4, with the molecular formula C3H9NO and a molecular weight of 75.11 g/mol.

What is 3-amino-1-propanol used for?

It is widely used as a molecular linker in pharmaceutical synthesis, as a chain extender in polyurethanes and dendrimers, as a neutralising amine in corrosion inhibitor and metalworking formulations, and as an intermediate for surfactants and textile auxiliaries.

Why does 3-amino-1-propanol solidify in the drum?

Its melting point is about 12 °C, so it sets in cool storage. Warm the drum gently and evenly before transfer; the material is unchanged once remelted.

Is 3-amino-1-propanol corrosive?

Yes. It is classified as corrosive and causes severe skin burns and serious eye damage, so chemical goggles, gloves and ventilation are required when handling it.

What packing sizes are available?

Chelora Amines supplies 3-amino-1-propanol in 200 kg drums, 1000 L IBCs and 25 kg carboys, with a certificate of analysis and safety data sheet on every despatch.
