Piperidine supplier and exporter

Hexahydropyridine · azinane · ≥99.5% commercial, LR and AR grades — supplied under end-use verification

Piperidine is the fully saturated, six-membered ring form of pyridine: a cyclic secondary amine and one of the strongest common industrial bases. It is a core building block for pharmaceuticals, local anaesthetics, rubber accelerators and corrosion inhibitors. It is also listed as a precursor chemical under international drug-control conventions, so every order is supplied against a verified end use. Chelora Amines supplies it worldwide and across India, in UN-specification packaging with a batch-wise COA, SDS and the declarations a controlled precursor requires.

What it is

Piperidine at a glance

Piperidine, also called hexahydropyridine or azinane, is a clear, colourless to pale yellow, highly flammable liquid with a strong pepper- and amine-like odour. It boils at 106 °C, freezes just below 0 °C, and mixes with water in all proportions.

It is the saturated ring version of pyridine, and the comparison with Cyclohexylamine is the useful one: both are cyclic secondary or primary amines with an unhindered nitrogen, but piperidine's nitrogen sits inside the ring rather than hanging off it, which makes it one of the strongest bases in routine industrial use — its conjugate acid pKa of about 11.2 is noticeably higher than the roughly 10.6 typical of primary alkylamines.

It is manufactured almost entirely by catalytic hydrogenation of pyridine, a large-volume coal-tar and synthetic feedstock. Because piperidine is also a listed precursor chemical for illicit drug manufacture, its trade is monitored internationally, and supply is restricted to buyers who can show a genuine industrial, pharmaceutical or research end use.

Why buyers choose Piperidine

  • An unusually strong base. Conjugate-acid pKa near 11.2 makes it a more forceful proton acceptor than most primary amines.
  • Compact and unhindered. The secondary ring nitrogen reacts readily in acylation, alkylation and catalytic steps.
  • A recognised pharma building block. The piperidine ring appears in a very large share of marketed small-molecule drugs.
  • Consistent, verified supply. Every batch moves with the paperwork a controlled precursor requires.

Chemistry and reactivity

How Piperidine behaves in a reaction

Piperidine reacts like a strong, unhindered secondary amine. Its main industrial value is as a nitrogen-donor building block: the ring becomes part of the target molecule rather than being consumed.

Amide and sulfonamide formation

Acylates readily with acid chlorides, anhydrides and sulfonyl chlorides to give N-acylpiperidines, common pharma intermediates.

RCOCl + C₅H₁₁N → amide

Enamine chemistry

Condenses with ketones and aldehydes bearing an alpha-hydrogen to form enamines, classic nucleophiles in C–C bond formation.

ketone + C₅H₁₁N → enamine

Dithiocarbamate formation

Adds to carbon disulfide and a metal salt to give piperidine pentamethylene dithiocarbamate, a rubber vulcanisation accelerator.

CS₂ + C₅H₁₁N → dithiocarbamate

Salt formation

Neutralises organic and mineral acids to piperidinium salts used as corrosion inhibitors and catalysts.

acid + C₅H₁₁N → salt

Curing agent chemistry

Used as an accelerator and catalyst in epoxy and phenolic resin curing at low addition levels.

catalytic, sub-stoichiometric

Nucleophilic substitution

Displaces halides and activated leaving groups to install the piperidine ring onto a target scaffold.

R–X + C₅H₁₁N → R–piperidine

Knoevenagel and Mannich catalysis

A classic organocatalyst base for Knoevenagel condensations and Mannich reactions in fine-chemical synthesis.

catalytic base

Acid scavenging

With a conjugate-acid pKa near 11.2 it neutralises acid generated in acylation and coupling steps more completely than a weaker base.

pKa ≈ 11.2 at 25 °C

Process notes. Piperidine has a flash point near 16 °C, so it is flammable at normal room temperature, and it is corrosive and toxic by skin contact. Handle it only against an approved, verified order — dose with cooling where reactions are exothermic, keep transfers closed, earthed and under nitrogen, and record consumption against the declared end use.

Discuss your process
How it is made

From feedstock to a finished drum

Piperidine is made in a single catalytic step from pyridine, so the specification is mainly about how completely the ring was saturated and how clean the pyridine feedstock was.

Stage 1

Feedstock

Pyridine, produced from coal tar or by synthetic routes from acetaldehyde and ammonia, is the sole practical feedstock.

Stage 2

Ring hydrogenation

Over a nickel, cobalt or palladium catalyst at elevated temperature and pressure, hydrogen saturates the aromatic ring to give piperidine.

Stage 3

Crude amine

The reactor delivers piperidine with unreacted pyridine, partially hydrogenated intermediates and water.

Stage 4

Separation

Distillation removes water and light ends and separates piperidine from residual pyridine and heavier by-products.

Stage 5

Finishing

Product is tested for assay, residual pyridine, water and colour, then filled under nitrogen into drums or smaller verified-buyer packs.

Why the impurity profile matters

Residual pyridine is the impurity that matters most: it is itself controlled in some jurisdictions and changes the odour and reactivity of a batch. Incomplete hydrogenation can also leave tetrahydropyridine intermediates, which behave differently in acylation and enamine chemistry.

Water content affects catalytic and moisture-sensitive uses. Where a registration dossier, a validated process or an import permit names limits, send them with the enquiry and we will match the batch and its paperwork rather than send the standard cut.

Storage life and colour

Twelve months in sealed original packing, kept cool, dry and away from every ignition source, is the normal working figure. Piperidine absorbs moisture and carbon dioxide from air, and open containers pick up colour quickly.

Because supply is verified, we also hold consumption records against the declared end use for every consignment. Keep drums closed between draws and re-check assay, water and colour before a critical batch from older stock. A retained sample of every batch is held here.

Grades and specification

Handling, storage and safety

Flammable, corrosive and a controlled precursor

Piperidine is a flammable, corrosive, toxic base with a flash point near 16 °C, and it is separately controlled as a drug precursor chemical. The notes below are a summary for planning only — work to the Safety Data Sheet supplied with your consignment, your own site risk assessment, and the import and end-use conditions that apply in your country.

Storage

  • Cool, dry, well-ventilated store away from direct sun, heat and every ignition source — treat it as you would a Class 3 flammable liquid.
  • Keep containers tightly closed; it absorbs moisture and carbon dioxide from air, and picks up colour once opened.
  • Segregate from acids, oxidising agents, acid chlorides and halogenated compounds.
  • Bund the area, earth the racking, restrict access to authorised personnel, and reconcile stock against the declared end use.

Materials of construction

  • Stainless steel, carbon steel, HDPE and PTFE are generally suitable.
  • Avoid copper, copper alloys, brass, bronze, zinc and galvanised surfaces — amines attack them.
  • Use gaskets and seals rated for amines; PTFE works, natural rubber and some elastomers swell.
  • Earth and bond equipment during every transfer, because the vapour is flammable and heavier than air.

Personal protection

  • Chemical splash goggles and a face shield when decanting, sampling or connecting hoses.
  • Chemical-resistant gloves (butyl or nitrile rated for amines), apron or suit and closed footwear — skin contact is a significant route of exposure.
  • Local exhaust ventilation at the transfer point; respiratory protection with an amine-rated cartridge where vapour may build up.
  • Eyewash and safety shower within ten seconds' reach of the handling point.

Testing

What we check, and how

The numbers on a Certificate of Analysis are only useful if you know how they were produced. These are the methods behind the figures on ours, and the checks worth repeating at your own goods-inward.

Gas chromatography

Separates the amine from related amines and residual solvents in one run, and gives both the assay and the impurity profile that matter to your reaction.

Acid–base titration

An independent check on total amine content, useful as a quick goods-inward confirmation before a drum is released to production.

Karl Fischer

Water determination, which matters wherever the next step is moisture sensitive or the amine feeds an anhydrous reaction.

APHA colour

A visual platinum–cobalt comparison. A rising colour value is the earliest sign that a pack has been exposed to air or held too long.

Density and refractive index

Fast confirmation of identity and strength, and a simple way to spot a wrong pack or a contaminated drum.

Non-volatile matter and iron

Gravimetric residue and trace metal checks, which matter for catalytic steps and regulated formulations.

Retained samples

A sample from every dispatched batch is held here, so a query months later can be settled against the original material.

Batch traceability

The batch number on the label ties back to the COA, the test record and the supply lot, which is what your auditor will ask to see.

Third-party testing

Where your customer or regulator needs an independent result, we can arrange analysis at a NABL-accredited laboratory before dispatch.

Why buy from us

What you get besides the chemical

Piperidine is a line on a price list and a headache in a warehouse. What separates suppliers is the grade flexibility, the paperwork and the answer you get when something is not routine.

One source for the whole amine list

Piperidine sits alongside the rest of our amine range, from ethanolamines to fatty amines. Your purchase team raises one enquiry, compares one quote and manages one vendor record instead of six.

Grades, not just the standard cut

Commercial, LR and AR grades are available, so you are not forced to redesign a step around the only grade your supplier happens to carry.

Paperwork that clears first time

COA, SDS, correct HSN and HS codes, dangerous goods declarations and certificates of origin are prepared with the consignment, not chased afterwards.

Specification matching

Tell us your limits on assay, residual pyridine, water and colour and we quote against them, rather than sending the standard cut and letting your QC find out.

Scheduled repeat supply

Once we know your monthly draw we hold and release material on a schedule, so you carry less inventory of a hazardous product.

Someone who knows the chemistry

Describe the reaction or formulation rather than the product code and we will tell you which grade fits — and say so plainly when a different amine would serve you better.

How to write an enquiry that gets a firm price

Most delays in quoting Piperidine come from a missing line in the enquiry, not from availability. Send these details and a firm price usually comes back the same day.

Include in your enquiry

  • Full name and CAS. Piperidine, CAS 110-89-4 — never just an abbreviation.
  • Grade. Commercial, LR and AR, plus any tighter limit your process needs.
  • Quantity and frequency. Trial pack, monthly offtake or an annual contract.
  • Pack size. Carboy, drum, IBC or bulk, and whether packs are returnable.
  • Destination. Delivery address for road, or port and Incoterm for export.
  • Key limits. Limits on assay, residual pyridine, water and colour that your step is sensitive to.
  • Documents. Anything beyond COA and SDS that your site or customs needs.
  • Application. One line on the reaction or formulation helps us confirm the right grade.

Mistakes that cost money

  • Ordering by short name only. The amine family has many near-identical names; always quote the CAS number.
  • Ignoring the impurity profile. Two quotes at the same price can carry very different related-amine and water content.
  • Using brass or copper fittings. Amines attack copper alloys; the pump fails, not the chemical.
  • Storing part-used drums open. Air and carbon dioxide raise colour and form carbamate solids.
  • Heating a sealed container. Pressure builds far faster than operators expect.
  • Leaving out the end use. Dangerous goods cannot ship without it, so the order simply stops.
  • Ordering at the last minute. DG bookings, packaging and permits take longer than ordinary freight.
  • Skipping the sample. A 25 litre trial pack costs far less than a failed production batch.

Not sure of some of it yet? Send what you have. A description of the reaction step and an approximate monthly volume is enough for us to come back with a recommended grade, a pack plan and an indicative price.

Glossary

Terms used on this page

Plain definitions of the words that appear on a Piperidine specification, label and shipping document.

Assay
The measured amount of the amine in the material, given as a percentage by weight or by GC area.
Anhydrous
Without water. Most amines are supplied neat, so water is controlled by Karl Fischer rather than by dilution.
APHA colour
A platinum-cobalt scale for how colourless a liquid is. Lower is better, and a rising number is the first sign of air exposure.
Amine class
Primary amines carry one carbon group on nitrogen, secondary two, tertiary three. It sets how many N–H bonds are free to react.
COA
Certificate of Analysis - the tested results for the specific batch you received.
SDS
Safety Data Sheet - hazards, handling, storage, spill response, first aid and disposal.
HSN and HS code
Tariff classification. HSN 2933 32 is used on Indian invoices for piperidine and its salts; the matching HS code appears on export papers.
IBC
Intermediate bulk container - the caged 1000 litre tote moved by forklift.
UN number
The four-digit transport identifier that fixes the label, packaging and segregation rules.
Packing group
The degree of transport danger within a hazard class. Group I is high, II medium and III low danger.
LR and AR grade
Laboratory reagent and analytical reagent - tighter impurity limits for laboratory and analytical work.
Karl Fischer
The standard titration for measuring water content in a chemical.
pKa
A measure of acid strength. For an amine it is quoted for the conjugate acid; a higher value means a stronger base.
Flash point
The lowest temperature at which the liquid gives off enough vapour to ignite.
Precursor chemical
A chemical controlled in trade because it can also be used, alongside its legitimate purposes, to manufacture a controlled drug.
Enamine
A nitrogen-substituted alkene formed from a secondary amine and a ketone or aldehyde, widely used as a nucleophile in synthesis.
Questions buyers ask

Piperidine FAQ

Short answers to what purchase, plant and QC teams ask us most about this product. Anything else, ask us directly.

What is piperidine used for?
Mainly as a building block for pharmaceutical intermediates, and as a feed for rubber accelerators, corrosion inhibitors and fine-chemical catalysis. The ring itself becomes part of the target molecule in most of these uses.
Why does piperidine need extra paperwork to buy?
Piperidine is listed internationally as a precursor chemical because of a documented history of misuse in illicit drug manufacture. Legitimate industrial, pharmaceutical and research buyers can still source it, but we verify company credentials and the stated end use before the first shipment, and keep the records that regulators expect.
How is it different from cyclohexylamine or pyridine?
All three are six-membered ring amines, but piperidine's nitrogen sits inside a fully saturated ring, cyclohexylamine's amino group hangs off a carbocyclic ring, and pyridine is aromatic and far less basic. Piperidine is the strongest base of the three by a wide margin.
How pure is your piperidine?
Commercial grade is typically 99.5% and above by GC, with residual pyridine at 0.3% maximum and water at 0.2% maximum. LR and AR grades carry tighter limits.
Is it hazardous to transport?
Yes. It is classed as a flammable liquid with a corrosive subsidiary risk, UN 2401, packing group II. The SDS supplied with each batch confirms the classification.
What is the shelf life?
Twelve months in sealed original packing, kept cool, closed and away from ignition sources. Re-check assay, water and colour before a critical batch.
Which pack sizes are available?
25 litre HDPE carboys for trials, MS or HDPE drums as the standard production pack, 1000 litre IBC totes for regular consumers, and bulk or ISO tank loads for larger campaigns.
How should it be stored and handled?
Store cool, dry, ventilated and bunded, away from heat and ignition sources, with containers closed, and segregated from acids, oxidisers and halogens. Use stainless steel, carbon steel or HDPE with PTFE seals; avoid copper, brass and zinc. Wear splash goggles, amine-resistant gloves and an apron — it is corrosive and toxic by skin contact.
What documents come with an order?
A batch-wise Certificate of Analysis, the Safety Data Sheet, HSN details on the invoice, and labels showing net weight, batch number, manufacturing date and UN number. Export orders also carry the commercial invoice, packing list, certificate of origin and dangerous goods declaration.
Do you supply trial quantities?
Yes. A 25 litre carboy or a smaller laboratory pack can be arranged so your team can qualify the material before a production order. Request a sample with your application details.
Which countries do you supply?
We ship worldwide — the Middle East and Africa, Asia Pacific, Europe and the CIS and the Americas — alongside road dispatch across India, through Nhava Sheva and Mundra on EXW, FOB, CFR, CIF or DAP terms.
How do I get a price?
Send the grade, quantity, pack size and delivery location through our contact page, by email to source@cheloraamines.com or by phone on +91 98191 11179. A complete enquiry usually gets a quote within 24 hours.
What is the HS code?
It falls under harmonised heading 2933 32, covering piperidine and its salts (heterocyclic compounds with nitrogen hetero-atoms only), shown as HSN 2933 32 on Indian invoices. The destination country's full code is stated on the export documents.
Which materials can I use for pumps, pipework and storage?
Stainless steel, carbon steel and HDPE with PTFE gaskets and seals. Avoid copper, brass, bronze, zinc and galvanised surfaces because amines attack copper alloys. Earth and bond equipment during transfer.
What information do you need before you can quote piperidine?
Your company registration, the process or product it goes into, delivery details and, for export, any import permit your country requires for a scheduled precursor chemical. We cannot quote or ship without a credible end use on file.
Can you supply against our own specification?
Yes. Send the parameters that matter — typically assay, residual pyridine, water and colour — and we will confirm whether we can meet them from stock or need to select or source a batch.
What is the minimum order quantity and the usual lead time?
A single 25 litre carboy is enough for trial and qualification work, while production orders move in drums, totes or container loads. Ex-stock domestic dispatches typically leave within a few working days; export and made-to-specification campaigns take longer.
Do I need any permit or declaration to buy it?
We supply business to business only and ask for company credentials, consignee details and a signed end-use declaration before the first shipment, plus any import permit the destination country requires.
