What it is

Isophorone Diamine at a glance

Isophorone diamine, usually shortened to IPDA and also named 3-aminomethyl-3,5,5-trimethylcyclohexylamine, is a clear, colourless to pale yellow, low-viscosity liquid with a mild amine odour. It boils at about 247 °C, freezes at around 10 °C, and mixes with water, alcohols and most epoxy resins.

Like Cyclohexylamine it is cycloaliphatic, but it carries four reactive N–H hydrogens on two primary amino groups that react at different rates: the aminomethyl group is faster, the ring-bound amine slower and more hindered. That built-in stagger gives epoxy systems a workable pot life, a high glass transition temperature and good chemical resistance, and because there is no aromatic ring the cured film resists yellowing far better than aromatic or araliphatic hardeners.

It is made from isophorone, itself derived from acetone: adding hydrogen cyanide gives isophorone nitrile, which is converted to the diamine by reductive amination with ammonia and hydrogen. Purity, isomer ratio, the amino-alcohol by-product, water and colour are the controlled parameters.

Why buyers choose Isophorone Diamine

  • Light-stable cure. No aromatic ring, so coatings and floors resist yellowing better than with aromatic or araliphatic hardeners.
  • High Tg and chemical resistance. The rigid ring gives a dense network that stands up to solvents, acids and alkalis.
  • Workable pot life. The two amine groups react at different speeds, leaving time to mix and apply.
  • Controlled specification. Purity, isomer ratio, amine value, water and colour are all specified.

Chemistry and reactivity

How Isophorone Diamine behaves in a reaction

IPDA is a diamine with four reactive N–H hydrogens and two primary amino groups of different reactivity. Almost everything it is used for follows from that: crosslinking epoxy resins, building polyamides and ureas, and phosgenation to IPDI.

Epoxy curing

Each N–H opens an epoxide ring; with four per molecule IPDA builds a dense, rigid network.

AHEW ≈ 42.6 g/eq

Mix ratio

Against a standard liquid bisphenol-A resin (EEW ≈ 190), about 22–23 parts IPDA per 100 parts resin.

phr = AHEW × 100 ÷ EEW

Phosgenation to IPDI

Reaction with phosgene converts both amines to isocyanates, giving IPDI for light-stable polyurethanes.

IPDA + 2 COCl₂ → IPDI

Polyamide formation

Condenses with dicarboxylic acids to give amorphous, transparent polyamides.

diacid + IPDA → polyamide

Adduct formation

Pre-reacted with part of an epoxy resin to make adduct hardeners with lower volatility and less blush.

epoxy + excess IPDA → adduct

Mannich bases

Reacts with phenols and formaldehyde to Mannich-base hardeners for low-temperature and damp cure.

phenol + HCHO + IPDA → base

Ketimine blocking

Condenses with ketones such as MIBK to ketimines, moisture-triggered latent hardeners.

IPDA + 2 R₂CO → ketimine

Carbamation (blush)

Free amine at the surface reacts with CO₂ and moisture to form carbamates — the cause of blush and greasy films.

IPDA + CO₂ + H₂O → carbamate

Process notes. IPDA freezes at about 10 °C and reacts with atmospheric CO₂. Store and use it above 15 °C, keep containers closed and nitrogen blanketed, and mix epoxy formulations in controlled batch sizes — the cure is exothermic and large masses can overheat.

Discuss your process
How it is made

From feedstock to a finished drum

IPDA is made from isophorone in two catalytic steps, and the route sets the specification: the cis/trans ratio comes from the hydrogenation, and amino-alcohol and secondary-amine by-products from side reactions.

Stage 1

Feedstock

Isophorone, made by condensing acetone, is reacted with hydrogen cyanide to give isophorone nitrile (IPN).

Stage 2

Imination

IPN is reacted with excess ammonia, usually over an acidic catalyst, to convert the ketone into an imine.

Stage 3

Hydrogenation

Over a cobalt catalyst at elevated pressure, hydrogen reduces the imine and the nitrile together to give the diamine as a cis/trans mixture.

Stage 4

Separation

Ammonia is recycled; vacuum distillation takes the IPDA cut away from isophorone amino alcohol (IPAA), secondary-amine by-products and heavies.

Stage 5

Finishing

Product is tested for purity, isomer ratio, amine value, water and colour, then filled under nitrogen into drums, totes or bulk containers.

Why the impurity profile matters

The cis/trans ratio changes reactivity: cis-IPDA reacts faster in epoxy systems, so a shift in ratio shows up as a change in pot life and cure speed. Isophorone amino alcohol (IPAA), formed where the ketone is reduced instead of aminated, carries only two N–H hydrogens and dilutes the crosslink density.

Water and colour matter most to coating formulators, because both affect film appearance and blush. Where a formulation, a registration or a validated process names limits, send them with the enquiry and we will match the batch rather than send the standard cut.

Storage life and colour

Twelve months in sealed original packing, kept at 15–30 °C and out of sunlight, is the normal working figure. Below about 10 °C IPDA can crystallise; warm the whole drum gently and mix before use so the melt is uniform.

Keep drums closed between draws and blanket tanks with nitrogen — CO₂ pickup shows as haze or a crust at the drum mouth. Re-check purity, water and colour before a critical batch from older stock. A retained sample of every batch is held here.

Know the difference

Isophorone Diamine against related amines

Four amines dominate cycloaliphatic and araliphatic epoxy curing. They differ in equivalent weight, speed of cure and resistance to yellowing, so a formulation built on one does not transfer directly to another.

Handling, storage and safety

Corrosive and a skin sensitiser

IPDA is a corrosive base and a skin sensitiser. It is not flammable at normal handling temperatures — the flash point is about 117 °C — but it causes severe burns and can trigger allergic skin reactions that last for life. The notes below are a summary for planning only — work to the Safety Data Sheet supplied with your consignment and to your own site risk assessment.

Storage

  • Store at 15–30 °C in a dry, ventilated area away from heat and direct sun; it crystallises below about 10 °C.
  • Keep containers tightly closed and nitrogen blanketed; it absorbs CO₂ and moisture from air.
  • Segregate from acids, oxidising agents, isocyanates, epoxy resins and acid chlorides.
  • Bund the area and keep a spill kit with absorbent material; prevent entry to drains.

Materials of construction

  • Stainless steel, carbon steel, HDPE and PTFE are generally suitable.
  • Avoid copper, copper alloys, brass, bronze, zinc and galvanised surfaces — amines attack them.
  • Use gaskets and seals rated for amines; PTFE works, natural rubber does not.
  • Trace-heat or insulate outdoor lines and tanks in cold climates to prevent crystallisation.

Personal protection

  • Chemical splash goggles and a face shield when decanting, sampling or mixing.
  • Nitrile or butyl gloves, changed often — sensitisation usually starts from small, repeated skin contact.
  • Local exhaust ventilation where it is heated, sprayed or mixed in bulk; mist is irritating.
  • Eyewash and safety shower within ten seconds' reach of the handling point.

Testing

What we check, and how

The numbers on a Certificate of Analysis are only useful if you know how they were produced. These are the methods behind the figures on ours, and the checks worth repeating at your own goods-inward.

Gas chromatography

Separates the amine from related amines and residual solvents in one run, and gives both the assay and the impurity profile that matter to your reaction.

Acid–base titration

An independent check on total amine content, useful as a quick goods-inward confirmation before a drum is released to production.

Karl Fischer

Water determination, which matters wherever the next step is moisture sensitive or the amine feeds an anhydrous reaction.

APHA colour

A visual platinum–cobalt comparison. A rising colour value is the earliest sign that a pack has been exposed to air or held too long.

Density and refractive index

Fast confirmation of identity and strength, and a simple way to spot a wrong pack or a contaminated drum.

Non-volatile matter and iron

Gravimetric residue and trace metal checks, which matter for catalytic steps and regulated formulations.

Retained samples

A sample from every dispatched batch is held here, so a query months later can be settled against the original material.

Batch traceability

The batch number on the label ties back to the COA, the test record and the supply lot, which is what your auditor will ask to see.

Third-party testing

Where your customer or regulator needs an independent result, we can arrange analysis at a NABL-accredited laboratory before dispatch.

Why buy from us

What you get besides the chemical

Isophorone Diamine is a line on a price list and a headache in a warehouse. What separates suppliers is the grade flexibility, the paperwork and the answer you get when something is not routine.

One source for the whole amine list

Isophorone Diamine sits alongside the rest of our amine range, from ethanolamines to fatty amines. Your purchase team raises one enquiry, compares one quote and manages one vendor record instead of six.

Grades, not just the standard cut

Standard, low-colour and LR grades are available, so you are not forced to redesign a step around the only grade your supplier happens to carry.

Paperwork that clears first time

COA, SDS, correct HSN and HS codes, dangerous goods declarations and certificates of origin are prepared with the consignment, not chased afterwards.

Specification matching

Tell us your limits on purity, isomer ratio, amine value, water and colour and we quote against them, rather than sending the standard cut and letting your QC find out.

Scheduled repeat supply

Once we know your monthly draw we hold and release material on a schedule, so you carry less inventory of a hazardous product.

Someone who knows the chemistry

Describe the reaction or formulation rather than the product code and we will tell you which grade fits — and say so plainly when a different amine would serve you better.

How to write an enquiry that gets a firm price

Most delays in quoting Isophorone Diamine come from a missing line in the enquiry, not from availability. Send these details and a firm price usually comes back the same day.

Include in your enquiry

  • Full name and CAS. Isophorone Diamine, CAS 2855-13-2 — never just an abbreviation.
  • Grade. Standard, low-colour and LR, plus any tighter limit your process needs.
  • Quantity and frequency. Trial pack, monthly offtake or an annual contract.
  • Pack size. Carboy, drum, IBC or bulk, and whether packs are returnable.
  • Destination. Delivery address for road, or port and Incoterm for export.
  • Key limits. Limits on purity, isomer ratio, amine value, water and colour that your step is sensitive to.
  • Documents. Anything beyond COA and SDS that your site or customs needs.
  • Application. One line on the reaction or formulation helps us confirm the right grade.

Mistakes that cost money

  • Ordering by short name only. The amine family has many near-identical names; always quote the CAS number.
  • Ignoring the impurity profile. Two quotes at the same price can carry very different related-amine and water content.
  • Using brass or copper fittings. Amines attack copper alloys; the pump fails, not the chemical.
  • Storing part-used drums open. Air and carbon dioxide raise colour and form carbamate solids.
  • Guessing the mix ratio. Work it out from AHEW and resin EEW; off-ratio mixes cure soft or brittle and blush.
  • Leaving out the end use. Dangerous goods cannot ship without it, so the order simply stops.
  • Storing drums in the cold. It can freeze in winter warehouses; plan warm storage before the delivery arrives.
  • Skipping the sample. A 25 litre trial pack costs far less than a failed production batch.

Not sure of some of it yet? Send what you have. A description of the reaction step and an approximate monthly volume is enough for us to come back with a recommended grade, a pack plan and an indicative price.

Glossary

Terms used on this page

Plain definitions of the words that appear on a Isophorone Diamine specification, label and shipping document.

Assay
The measured amount of the amine in the material, given as a percentage by weight or by GC area.
Anhydrous
Without water. Most amines are supplied neat, so water is controlled by Karl Fischer rather than by dilution.
APHA colour
A platinum-cobalt scale for how colourless a liquid is. Lower is better, and a rising number is the first sign of air exposure.
Amine class
Primary amines carry one carbon group on nitrogen, secondary two, tertiary three. It sets how many N–H bonds are free to react.
COA
Certificate of Analysis - the tested results for the specific batch you received.
SDS
Safety Data Sheet - hazards, handling, storage, spill response, first aid and disposal.
HSN and HS code
Tariff classification. HSN 2921 30 is used on Indian invoices for cyclanic, cyclenic or cycloterpenic amines; the matching HS code appears on export papers.
IBC
Intermediate bulk container - the caged 1000 litre tote moved by forklift.
UN number
The four-digit transport identifier that fixes the label, packaging and segregation rules.
Packing group
The degree of transport danger within a hazard class. Group I is high, II medium and III low danger.
LR and AR grade
Laboratory reagent and analytical reagent - tighter impurity limits for laboratory and analytical work.
Karl Fischer
The standard titration for measuring water content in a chemical.
pKa
A measure of acid strength. For an amine it is quoted for the conjugate acid; a higher value means a stronger base.
Flash point
The lowest temperature at which the liquid gives off enough vapour to ignite.
AHEW
Amine hydrogen equivalent weight - the mass of hardener carrying one reactive N–H hydrogen; used with the resin EEW to set the mix ratio.
Amine blush
A greasy or cloudy surface film formed when free amine reacts with carbon dioxide and moisture during cure.
Questions buyers ask

Isophorone Diamine FAQ

Short answers to what purchase, plant and QC teams ask us most about this product. Anything else, ask us directly.

What is isophorone diamine used for?
Mainly as a hardener for epoxy flooring, protective coatings, composites and adhesives, and as the raw material for IPDI. It is also used in polyamides, polyureas and adduct hardeners.
How much IPDA do I need per 100 parts of epoxy resin?
Multiply the AHEW (about 42.6) by 100 and divide by the resin's EEW. For a standard liquid bisphenol-A resin with an EEW around 190, that is about 22–23 parts per hundred. Formulated systems with accelerators or adducts need their own calculation.
How is IPDA different from PACM, 1,3-BAC and MXDA?
All four cure epoxies, but they differ in equivalent weight, cure speed and light stability. IPDA sits in the middle for speed and gives good resistance to yellowing; MXDA cures faster but yellows more. Formulations do not transfer between them without adjustment.
How pure is your IPDA?
Standard grade is typically 99.5% and above by GC, with a cis/trans ratio between 70/30 and 80/20, water at 0.2% maximum and colour at 20 APHA maximum. Low-colour grade carries a tighter colour limit.
Is it hazardous to transport?
Yes. It is listed as UN 2289, Isophoronediamine, Class 8 corrosive, packing group III. The SDS supplied with each batch confirms the classification.
What is the shelf life?
Twelve months in sealed original packing, stored at 15–30 °C and out of sunlight. Re-check purity, water and colour before a critical batch.
Which pack sizes are available?
25 litre HDPE carboys for trials, MS or HDPE drums as the standard production pack, 1000 litre IBC totes for regular consumers, and bulk or ISO tank loads for larger campaigns.
How should it be stored and handled?
Store at 15–30 °C, dry, ventilated and bunded, with containers closed and nitrogen blanketed, and segregated from acids, oxidisers, isocyanates and epoxy resins. Use stainless steel, carbon steel or HDPE with PTFE seals; avoid copper, brass and zinc. Wear splash goggles and nitrile or butyl gloves — it is a skin sensitiser.
What documents come with an order?
A batch-wise Certificate of Analysis, the Safety Data Sheet, HSN details on the invoice, and labels showing net weight, batch number, manufacturing date and UN number. Export orders also carry the commercial invoice, packing list, certificate of origin and dangerous goods declaration.
Do you supply trial quantities?
Yes. A 25 litre carboy or a smaller laboratory pack can be arranged so your team can qualify the material before a production order. Request a sample with your application details.
Which countries do you supply?
We ship worldwide — the Middle East and Africa, Asia Pacific, Europe and the CIS and the Americas — alongside road dispatch across India, through Nhava Sheva and Mundra on EXW, FOB, CFR, CIF or DAP terms.
How do I get a price?
Send the grade, quantity, pack size and delivery location through our contact page, by email to source@cheloraamines.com or by phone on +91 98191 11179. A complete enquiry usually gets a quote within 24 hours.
What is the HS code?
It falls under harmonised heading 2921 30, covering cyclanic, cyclenic or cycloterpenic mono- or polyamines and their derivatives, shown as HSN 2921 30 on Indian invoices. The destination country's full code is stated on the export documents.
Which materials can I use for pumps, pipework and storage?
Stainless steel, carbon steel and HDPE with PTFE gaskets and seals. Avoid copper, brass, bronze, zinc and galvanised surfaces because amines attack copper alloys. Earth and bond equipment during transfer.
Why has my IPDA turned solid or cloudy?
It freezes at about 10 °C, so a drum stored cold can crystallise. Warm the whole drum gently and mix before use. Cloudiness or a crust at the drum mouth is usually carbamate from CO₂ in air — keep containers closed and blanketed.
Can you supply against our own specification?
Yes. Send the parameters that matter — typically purity, isomer ratio, amine value, water and colour — and we will confirm whether we can meet them from stock or need to select or source a batch.
What is the minimum order quantity and the usual lead time?
A single 25 litre carboy is enough for trial and qualification work, while production orders move in drums, totes or container loads. Ex-stock domestic dispatches typically leave within a few working days; export and made-to-specification campaigns take longer.
Do I need any permit or declaration to buy it?
We supply business to business only and ask for company credentials, consignee details and a signed end-use declaration before the first shipment, plus any import permit the destination country requires.
