Dimethylamine supplier and exporter

DMA · N-methylmethanamine · 40% and 60% aqueous solution, and anhydrous liquefied gas

Dimethylamine is the simplest secondary aliphatic amine and one of the highest-volume amine intermediates in the world. It is a gas at ordinary temperature, so it is traded either as an aqueous solution — most commonly 40% w/w — or as an anhydrous liquefied gas in pressure containers. Almost none of it is used as such: it is consumed to make dimethylformamide, dimethylacetamide, DMAPA for betaine surfactants, dithiocarbamate rubber accelerators and water-treatment polymers. Chelora Amines supplies it across India and worldwide, with a batch-wise COA, SDS and the dangerous-goods paperwork each form requires.

What it is

Dimethylamine at a glance

Dimethylamine is a colourless gas at room temperature with a sharp, fishy ammoniacal odour detectable at very low concentration. It liquefies at 7 °C, so in practice it is handled either as a pressurised liquefied gas or, far more often, as a clear aqueous solution at 40% or 60% w/w.

It is the middle member of the methylamine family. Compared with Methylamine, which is primary, and Trimethylamine, which is tertiary and has no N–H at all, dimethylamine is the one with two alkyl groups donating electron density to nitrogen and a single hydrogen left to react. That combination gives it the highest basicity of the three — a conjugate-acid pKa near 10.7 — and makes it the preferred nitrogen source wherever a dimethylamino group has to be installed.

All three methylamines are produced together by reacting methanol with ammonia over an alumina or zeolite catalyst, then separated by distillation. Because the reaction gives a mixture, plants adjust the ammonia-to-methanol ratio and recycle to shift the split toward whichever amine is in demand.

Why buyers choose Dimethylamine

  • The strongest of the methylamines. Two methyl groups raise the conjugate-acid pKa to about 10.7, above both methylamine and trimethylamine.
  • One reactive N–H. It installs a dimethylamino group cleanly without the over-alkylation a primary amine invites.
  • Two supply forms. Aqueous solution for most users, anhydrous liquefied gas where water cannot be tolerated.
  • Backed by a full amine range. Downstream amines such as DMEA sit on the same price list.

Chemistry and reactivity

How Dimethylamine behaves in a reaction

Dimethylamine is a strong, compact secondary amine with exactly one N–H. Nearly all of its industrial chemistry is about transferring the dimethylamino group onto a larger molecule.

Amide formation

Reacts with carbon monoxide or methyl formate to give dimethylformamide, and with acetic anhydride to give dimethylacetamide — the two largest single outlets.

HCOOCH₃ + (CH₃)₂NH → DMF

Cyanoethylation

Adds across acrylonitrile and is then hydrogenated to DMAPA, the backbone of cocamidopropyl betaine surfactants.

CH₂=CHCN + DMA → DMAPN

Dithiocarbamate formation

Adds to carbon disulfide with a base or metal salt to give ZDMC, TMTD and related ultra-accelerators for rubber.

CS₂ + DMA → dithiocarbamate

Ethoxylation

Reacts with ethylene oxide to give N,N-dimethylethanolamine, the catalyst and neutralising amine.

EO + DMA → DMEA

Quaternisation

Alkylation of dimethylamino derivatives with methyl chloride or benzyl chloride gives quats for flocculants and biocides.

R–Cl + R′₂NMe → quat

Salt formation

Neutralises mineral and organic acids to dimethylammonium salts used as intermediates and phase-transfer agents.

HCl + DMA → salt

Mannich reaction

Condenses with formaldehyde and an enolisable carbonyl to install a dimethylaminomethyl group in one step.

HCHO + DMA + C–H → Mannich base

Nucleophilic substitution

Displaces halides and activated leaving groups to build dimethylamino-substituted intermediates for pharma and agro.

R–X + DMA → R–NMe₂

Process notes. Anhydrous DMA is a flammable gas handled only in pressure-rated, earthed equipment with nitrogen purging; the 40% solution is a flammable, corrosive liquid that still evolves amine vapour from the headspace. Dose into exothermic steps with cooling, keep the system closed, and remember that the solution's strength drifts if containers are left open.

Discuss your process
How it is made

From methanol to a finished drum

Dimethylamine is never made alone. It comes out of a methylamines plant alongside its mono and tri relatives, and the specification is mostly about how cleanly the three were separated.

Stage 1

Feedstock

Methanol and anhydrous ammonia, the two bulk feedstocks behind the whole methylamine family.

Stage 2

Amination

Over an alumina or shape-selective zeolite catalyst at elevated temperature and pressure, ammonia and methanol give mono-, di- and trimethylamine with water.

Stage 3

Crude mixture

The reactor delivers all three amines, unreacted ammonia and water in an equilibrium mixture.

Stage 4

Separation

An extractive distillation train recovers ammonia for recycle and splits the three amines; the unwanted ones are returned to the reactor.

Stage 5

Finishing

Product is taken as anhydrous liquefied gas or diluted to 40% or 60% w/w, tested, and filled into drums, cylinders or bulk containers.

Why the impurity profile matters

Residual monomethylamine and trimethylamine are the impurities to watch. Monomethylamine has two N–H bonds and can over-react in alkylation and amidation steps; trimethylamine has none and simply carries through as an odorous dead load that shows up in the finished product's smell.

Free ammonia is the other common carry-over, and it competes directly for electrophiles. Where your process or registration dossier sets limits on these, send them with the enquiry so the batch and the paperwork can be matched before dispatch rather than afterwards.

Strength, storage life and pressure

Twelve months in sealed original packing is the normal working figure for the aqueous solution, kept cool and tightly closed. The assay is a solution strength, not a purity, so an open or warm drum loses amine to the headspace and the solution drifts below specification.

Anhydrous material is a liquefied gas under its own vapour pressure: containers must be pressure-rated, protected from heat and never filled beyond their stated capacity. A retained sample of every batch is held here, so a query months later can be settled against the original material.

Dimethylamine against related amines

The three methylamines share a CAS heading, a plant and an abbreviation style, and they are ordered wrongly more often than almost any other amine group. The number of N–H bonds is what separates them in a reaction.

Handling, storage and safety

Flammable, corrosive and strongly odorous

Anhydrous dimethylamine is a flammable gas; the aqueous solution is a flammable corrosive liquid that gives off the same amine vapour. Both are detectable by smell far below harmful levels, which is useful but is not a substitute for monitoring. The notes below are a summary for planning only — work to the Safety Data Sheet supplied with your consignment and your own site risk assessment.

Storage

  • Cool, dry, well-ventilated store away from direct sun, heat and every ignition source.
  • Keep containers tightly closed — an open drum of solution loses amine strength to the headspace and fills the area with odour.
  • Segregate from acids, oxidising agents and halogenated compounds.
  • Pressure containers of anhydrous material must be upright, secured, shaded and never heated; store them outdoors or in a dedicated gas store.

Materials of construction

  • Stainless steel, carbon steel, HDPE and PTFE are generally suitable.
  • Avoid copper, copper alloys, brass, bronze, zinc and galvanised surfaces — amines attack them.
  • Use gaskets and seals rated for amines; PTFE works, natural rubber and some elastomers swell.
  • Earth and bond equipment during every transfer; the vapour is flammable and heavier than air.

Personal protection

  • Chemical splash goggles and a face shield when decanting, sampling or connecting hoses.
  • Chemical-resistant gloves rated for amines, apron or suit and closed footwear.
  • Local exhaust ventilation at the transfer point; respiratory protection with an amine-rated cartridge where vapour may build up.
  • Eyewash and safety shower within ten seconds' reach of the handling point.

Testing

What we check, and how

The numbers on a Certificate of Analysis are only useful if you know how they were produced. These are the methods behind the figures on ours, and the checks worth repeating at your own goods-inward.

Gas chromatography

Separates dimethylamine from its mono and tri relatives and from ammonia in one run, which is the only reliable way to see the amine split.

Acid–base titration

The working method for solution strength, and a quick goods-inward confirmation before a drum is released to production.

Karl Fischer

Water determination on anhydrous material, where even a small carry-over changes the behaviour of a moisture-sensitive step.

APHA colour

A visual platinum–cobalt comparison. A rising colour value is the earliest sign that a pack has been exposed to air or held too long.

Density

Fast confirmation of solution strength, and a simple way to spot a wrong pack or a drum that has lost amine to the headspace.

Non-volatile matter and iron

Gravimetric residue and trace metal checks, which matter for catalytic steps and regulated formulations.

Retained samples

A sample from every dispatched batch is held here, so a query months later can be settled against the original material.

Batch traceability

The batch number on the label ties back to the COA, the test record and the supply lot, which is what your auditor will ask to see.

Third-party testing

Where your customer or regulator needs an independent result, we can arrange analysis at a NABL-accredited laboratory before dispatch.

Why buy from us

What you get besides the chemical

Dimethylamine is a line on a price list and a headache in a warehouse. What separates suppliers is the form flexibility, the paperwork and the answer you get when something is not routine.

One source for the whole amine list

Dimethylamine sits alongside the rest of our amine range, from ethanolamines to fatty amines. Your purchase team raises one enquiry, compares one quote and manages one vendor record instead of six.

Both forms, not just the easy one

Aqueous solution at 40% or 60%, and anhydrous liquefied gas, so you are not forced to redesign a step around the only form your supplier happens to carry.

Paperwork that clears first time

COA, SDS, correct HSN and HS codes, dangerous goods declarations and certificates of origin are prepared with the consignment, not chased afterwards.

Specification matching

Tell us your limits on amine split, ammonia and colour and we quote against them, rather than sending the standard cut and letting your QC find out.

Scheduled repeat supply

Once we know your monthly draw we hold and release material on a schedule, so you carry less inventory of a hazardous product.

Someone who knows the chemistry

Describe the reaction or formulation rather than the product code and we will tell you which form fits — and say so plainly when a different amine would serve you better.

How to write an enquiry that gets a firm price

Most delays in quoting Dimethylamine come from a missing line in the enquiry, not from availability. Send these details and a firm price usually comes back the same day.

Include in your enquiry

  • Full name and CAS. Dimethylamine, CAS 124-40-3 — never just "DMA".
  • Form and strength. 40% solution, 60% solution or anhydrous.
  • Quantity and frequency. Trial pack, monthly offtake or an annual contract.
  • Pack size. Carboy, drum, IBC, cylinder or bulk, and whether packs are returnable.
  • Destination. Delivery address for road, or port and Incoterm for export.
  • Key limits. Limits on MMA, TMA, ammonia and colour that your step is sensitive to.
  • Documents. Anything beyond COA and SDS that your site or customs needs.
  • Application. One line on the reaction or formulation helps us confirm the right form.

Mistakes that cost money

  • Writing only "DMA". It is also used for dimethylacetamide and N,N-dimethylaniline; always quote the CAS number.
  • Confusing strength with purity. A 40% solution at 99% purity is normal — the two numbers mean different things.
  • Ordering anhydrous without pressure handling. The site has to be able to receive and empty a pressure container.
  • Using brass or copper fittings. Amines attack copper alloys; the pump fails, not the chemical.
  • Storing part-used drums open. Amine escapes to the headspace and the solution drifts below specification.
  • Heating a sealed container. Pressure builds far faster than operators expect.
  • Ordering at the last minute. DG bookings, packaging and permits take longer than ordinary freight.
  • Skipping the sample. A 25 litre trial pack costs far less than a failed production batch.

Not sure of some of it yet? Send what you have. A description of the reaction step and an approximate monthly volume is enough for us to come back with a recommended form, a pack plan and an indicative price.

For a solution, the percentage of amine dissolved in water. It is not the same as purity.
Anhydrous
Without water. For dimethylamine this means the liquefied gas rather than the aqueous solution.
APHA colour
A platinum-cobalt scale for how colourless a liquid is. Lower is better, and a rising number is the first sign of air exposure.
Amine class
Primary amines carry one carbon group on nitrogen, secondary two, tertiary three. It sets how many N–H bonds are free to react.
COA
Certificate of Analysis — the tested results for the specific batch you received.
SDS
Safety Data Sheet — hazards, handling, storage, spill response, first aid and disposal.
HSN and HS code
Tariff classification. HSN 2921 11 is used on Indian invoices for the methylamines; the matching HS code appears on export papers.
IBC
Intermediate bulk container — the caged 1000 litre tote moved by forklift.

Cyanoethylation
Addition of an amine across the double bond of acrylonitrile, the first step toward DMAPA.
Dithiocarbamate
The salt formed from an amine and carbon disulfide, used as a rubber accelerator and fungicide.
Questions buyers ask

Dimethylamine FAQ

Short answers to what purchase, plant and QC teams ask us most about this product. Anything else, ask us directly.

What is dimethylamine used for?
Almost entirely as an intermediate. The largest outlets are dimethylformamide and dimethylacetamide solvents, DMAPA for betaine surfactants, dimethyldithiocarbamate rubber accelerators, cationic water-treatment polymers and agrochemical actives and salts.
Is dimethylamine a gas or a liquid?
Both, depending on the form you buy. Anhydrous dimethylamine boils at 7 °C, so it is a gas at room temperature and is supplied as a liquefied gas in pressure containers. Most buyers take the 40% aqueous solution instead, which handles as an ordinary flammable corrosive liquid.
Should I order the 40% solution or anhydrous material?
Take the solution unless water interferes with your chemistry or you need the amine neat. The solution needs no pressure equipment, is far easier to store and dose, and covers the great majority of industrial use. Anhydrous is for moisture-sensitive reactions and for plants already set up for liquefied gas.
How is it different from methylamine and trimethylamine?
By the number of groups on the nitrogen. Methylamine is primary with two N–H bonds, dimethylamine is secondary with one, and trimethylamine is tertiary with none. Dimethylamine is the most basic of the three and is the one used wherever a dimethylamino group has to be installed cleanly.
Does 40% strength mean it is only 40% pure?
No. Strength and purity are different numbers. A 40% solution contains 40 grams of dimethylamine per 100 grams of solution, with the balance water; on an amine basis the material is still typically 99% and above dimethylamine, with residual mono- and trimethylamine controlled to specification.
How pure is your dimethylamine?
The standard aqueous grade is 40 ± 0.5% w/w with monomethylamine and trimethylamine each at 0.5% maximum on an amine basis and ammonia at 0.1% maximum. Anhydrous grade is 99% and above. Tighter limits are available against your specification.
Is it hazardous to transport?
Yes, and the two forms are classified differently. Anhydrous dimethylamine is UN 1032, Class 2.1 flammable gas. The aqueous solution is UN 1160, Class 3 with a corrosive subsidiary risk, packing group II. The SDS supplied with each batch confirms the classification.
What is the shelf life?
Twelve months in sealed original packing for the solution, kept cool and tightly closed. Re-check strength before a critical batch from older stock, because an imperfectly sealed drum loses amine to the headspace.
Why does it smell so strongly?
Dimethylamine has a sharp fishy odour detectable well below any harmful concentration, which is why a small leak is noticed immediately. Treat the smell as a prompt to check the system, not as a measure of exposure — use monitoring and ventilation rather than relying on it.
Which pack sizes are available?
25 litre HDPE carboys for trials, MS or HDPE drums as the standard production pack, 1000 litre IBC totes for regular consumers, and ISO tanks for bulk solution. Anhydrous material moves in pressure cylinders and tonners.
How should it be stored and handled?
Store cool, dry, ventilated and bunded, away from heat and ignition sources, containers closed, and segregated from acids and oxidisers. Use stainless steel, carbon steel or HDPE with PTFE seals; avoid copper, brass and zinc. Pressure containers of anhydrous material must be upright, secured and never heated.
What documents come with an order?
A batch-wise Certificate of Analysis, the Safety Data Sheet, HSN details on the invoice, and labels showing net weight, batch number, manufacturing date and UN number. Export orders also carry the commercial invoice, packing list, certificate of origin and dangerous goods declaration.
Do you supply trial quantities?
Yes. A 25 litre carboy of the solution can be arranged so your team can qualify the material before a production order. Request a sample with your application details.
What is the HS code?
It falls under harmonised heading 2921 11, covering methylamine, di- and trimethylamine and their salts, shown as HSN 2921 11 on Indian invoices. The destination country's full code is stated on the export documents.
Which materials can I use for pumps, pipework and storage?
Stainless steel, carbon steel and HDPE with PTFE gaskets and seals. Avoid copper, brass, bronze, zinc and galvanised surfaces because amines attack copper alloys. Earth and bond equipment during transfer, and use pressure-rated equipment for anhydrous material.
Which countries do you supply?
We ship worldwide — the Middle East and Africa, Asia Pacific, Europe and the CIS and the Americas — alongside road dispatch across India, through Nhava Sheva and Mundra on EXW, FOB, CFR, CIF or DAP terms.
Can you supply against our own specification?
Yes. Send the parameters that matter — typically strength, residual mono- and trimethylamine, ammonia and colour — and we will confirm whether we can meet them from stock or need to select or source a batch.
What is the minimum order quantity and the usual lead time?
A single 25 litre carboy is enough for trial and qualification work, while production orders move in drums, totes or container loads. Ex-stock domestic dispatches typically leave within a few working days; export and made-to-specification campaigns take longer.
How do I get a price?
Send the form, strength, quantity, pack size and delivery location through our contact page, by email to source@cheloraamines.com or by phone on +91 98191 11179. A complete enquiry usually gets a quote within 24 hours.
