Triethanolamine (TEA, 2,2′,2″-nitrilotriethanol, CAS 102-71-6) is a tertiary alkanolamine from the ethanolamines family, and it is used in cement grinding aids because it clings to freshly broken clinker surfaces, stops fine particles clumping and keeps them off the balls and liners. The mill then grinds faster, or reaches a higher Blaine at the same rate, while the same molecule gives a modest lift to early strength by speeding the reaction of the aluminate phase. That double role is why triethanolamine remains the reference active against which TIPA, DEIPA and glycols are judged. For a cement plant the stakes are practical: power per tonne, separator load, silo and packer flow, and the one-day and two-day results that decide whether a PPC or PSC batch clears the laboratory. This guide covers the mechanism, the alternatives, the grades on offer, winter handling and what to ask of a supplier.

If you are still choosing between ethanolamines, our companion guide MEA vs DEA vs TEA compares all three, and our technical guide on how monoethanolamine removes CO2 and H2S shows another large use of the same family.

Why Is Triethanolamine Used in Cement Grinding Aids?

The job of triethanolamine in cement grinding aids is to mask the surface charges that make freshly ground particles stick to each other and to the grinding media. Each impact opens new clinker surface with broken calcium–oxygen and silicon–oxygen bonds. In a hot, dry mill those charged sites pull the finest particles into loose clusters and plaster a thin layer onto balls and liner plates, so the media cushion each blow and energy turns into heat instead of fracture.

A TEA grinding aid works at the scale of single molecules. The nitrogen atom and three hydroxyl groups are strongly polar, so the molecule adsorbs onto active sites almost as soon as they form. With the charge neutralised, the powder flows freely and the separator draws finished product out of the circuit instead of returning clumped fines as rejects. Plants typically see less media coating and a lower circulating load.

In the mill

Fresh clinker→Charged sites→TEA adsorbs→Free flow→Output or Blaine up

After water is added

Water added→TEA + C3A + gypsum→Ettringite sooner→Early strength up

Grinding effect first, hydration effect second: the same molecule does both jobs.

What Is Triethanolamine, and Which Properties Matter in a Cement Mill?

Triethanolamine is a tertiary amine with three 2-hydroxyethyl arms on one nitrogen atom, which makes it both a weak base and a triol. Also sold under the pharmacopoeia name trolamine, it mixes with water in all proportions, has very low volatility and is syrupy at room temperature. Producers make it by reacting ethylene oxide with ammonia, then separate the resulting mono-, di- and tri-substituted amines by distillation.

Four properties matter to a cement maker. Low volatility lets the additive survive a hot closed-circuit mill. Strong polarity gives firm adsorption on clinker. Its ability to complex calcium, aluminium and iron ions lets it act on the cement phases once water is added. And water miscibility makes blending with glycols or acetic acid easy. The drawbacks follow from the same chemistry: it absorbs moisture, freezes in a cold store and can disturb setting when overdosed.

How Does a TEA Grinding Aid Affect Mill Output, Blaine Fineness and Early Strength?

A well-matched TEA grinding aid lets a plant either raise mill output at the same Blaine fineness or push fineness higher without losing throughput. Gains vary with clinker mineralogy, mill design, separator efficiency and the fly ash or slag share, so treat any figure quoted without a site trial with caution.

The strength effect is chemical. Once water is added, TEA speeds the reaction between tricalcium aluminate (C3A) and gypsum, so ettringite forms sooner, and it helps dissolve the ferrite phase (C4AF). That is why TEA-based products are linked with better early strength development at one and two days. At 28 days the benefit is smaller and can turn negative at high dose, because excess amine can slow the hydration of alite (C3S). Dose to a tested optimum, never on the assumption that more is better.

Because the additive disperses the powder, the same Blaine fineness reading can hide a different particle size distribution. A laser sizing check, or at least the 45 µm sieve residue, shows what the mill is really producing.

How Does Triethanolamine Compare with TIPA, DEIPA and Glycols?

TEA is the stronger early-strength performer, triisopropanolamine (TIPA) is favoured for later-age strength, diethanolisopropanolamine (DEIPA) sits between them, and glycols such as MEG and DEG mainly improve grinding efficiency. Most commercial grinding aids blend two or more of these to suit a particular clinker.

TEA vs TIPA

The TEA vs TIPA choice comes down to which age of strength matters more. TIPA’s bulkier isopropanol arms change how it binds iron and aluminium, so its benefit shows at seven and 28 days, especially in ferrite-rich cements. Some formulators report that TIPA raises air content in mortar and pair it with a defoamer. TEA acts earlier and is generally the cheaper active.

DEIPA and glycols

DEIPA carries two hydroxyethyl groups and one hydroxypropyl group, so it blends the behaviour of its two parents. Monoethylene and diethylene glycol were among the earliest grinding aids; they cut agglomeration well but do nothing for hydration, and MEG partly evaporates at mill temperatures. Some formulators also neutralise TEA with acetic acid to make TEA acetate. In short:

Reference active

TEA

Grinding efficiency plus early strength; the reference active.

Later-age strength

TIPA

Grinding efficiency plus seven- and 28-day strength; watch air content.

Middle path

DEIPA

A middle path between the two amines.

Low-cost flow aid

MEG and DEG

Grinding efficiency and powder flow at low cost; no strength effect.

How Is Triethanolamine Used in PPC and PSC Blended Cements in India?

In blended cements, triethanolamine helps offset the slower early strength that comes with replacing clinker by fly ash or ground granulated blast furnace slag. Indian output is led by Portland Pozzolana Cement (PPC) to IS 1489 (Part 1) and Portland Slag Cement (PSC) to IS 455, alongside Ordinary Portland Cement to IS 269. Diluting the clinker lowers one-day and three-day results unless finer grinding or a chemical activator compensates.

Slag is harder to grind than clinker, while fly ash tends to cluster with clinker fines around the separator. Using triethanolamine in cement grinding aids helps in both cases, and the aluminate effect partly restores early strength. Vertical roller mills need separate tuning, since powder flow affects bed stability. The trade-off shows up differently across plant types:

Plant typeWhereWhat the grinding aid has to solve
Fly-ash grinding unitsChhattisgarh, MaharashtraFly ash clusters with clinker fines around the separator
Slag grinding unitsBeside steel plants in Jharkhand and West BengalSlag is harder to grind than clinker
Integrated plantsRajasthan, Andhra Pradesh, TelanganaClinker dilution in blended cements lowers early strength

How Do You Run a Plant Trial of a Triethanolamine Grinding Aid?

Run a triethanolamine grinding aid trial as a controlled comparison against a stable baseline, with fineness and strength tested to IS 4031. Most Indian plants follow a sequence like this.

  1. Record a clean baseline.Run the mill without additive, or with the current product, for several stable shifts. Log throughput, kWh per tonne, Blaine, residue and circulating load.
  2. Set one clear target.Decide whether the aim is more output, higher fineness or better early strength in PPC or PSC.
  3. Qualify the raw material.Request a sample with a certificate of analysis and an SDS. Check assay, the balance component, water and colour before any liquid reaches the dosing tank.
  4. Install accurate dosing.Use a metering pump interlocked with the mill feed rate. Heat-traced lines help in winter, when the amine thickens and a volumetric pump can under-deliver.
  5. Step the dose.Start low and raise the dose in stages, letting the mill settle at each step.
  6. Test and approve.Compare setting time, soundness and compressive strength at the relevant ages against baseline samples tested in the same week. Once the optimum is confirmed, fix the grade and agree repeat-supply terms so the next lot matches the trial material.

What Should Buyers Check in a Triethanolamine Specification?

Buyers should check assay, the identity of the balance component, water content, colour and freezing behaviour, with batch test data for every lot. Two grades are commonly traded, and they are not interchangeable.

Triethanolamine 99%

  • The high-purity grade
  • Gives a clean, predictable active

Triethanolamine 85%

  • A cheaper commercial grade
  • Balance is usually diethanolamine
  • Some suppliers use a similar label for a water-diluted, low-freeze product
  • Assay and the diethanolamine split set the true dose per tonne.
  • Water dilutes the active content.
  • Colour (APHA): a sudden darkening can signal oxidation or poor storage.
  • Batch test data: ask for it with every lot and confirm the composition of each grade before you compare prices.
i

Note

When switching from triethanolamine 99% to triethanolamine 85%, or between two suppliers’ 85% products, find out what makes up the balance. Diethanolamine and water give very different active content per kilogram, so a formulation built on one grade will misdose if the other is dropped in unadjusted.

How Should Triethanolamine Be Stored and Handled at a Cement Plant?

Store triethanolamine in closed carbon steel or stainless steel tanks or drums, kept above its freezing point and protected from moisture. Drums reaching plants in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh or north India in December and January often arrive partly frozen; warm them evenly in a hot room, and give bulk tanks gentle heating and insulation. Keep copper and brass out of pumps and fittings, since amines attack them, and use a nitrogen blanket on bulk tanks where possible.

!

Important

Triethanolamine can cause serious eye irritation, and repeated skin contact can irritate the skin. Wear splash goggles, the gloves specified in the SDS and protective clothing. Keep it away from strong acids, oxidisers and nitrites or other nitrosating agents, which can form nitrosamines with ethanolamines. In case of exposure, follow the SDS and seek medical attention.

How Did Triethanolamine Become a Standard Cement Additive?

Charles-Adolphe Wurtz first described the ethanolamines around 1860, and Ludwig Knorr separated the individual amines in the 1890s. Bulk production followed industrial ethylene oxide manufacture in the twentieth century, and amines and glycols were adopted as grinding aids from around the 1930s.

India’s first cement factory opened in Madras in 1904, and output grew slowly under price and distribution controls. Partial decontrol in 1982 and full decontrol in 1989 allowed fast capacity growth, and India is now the world’s second-largest cement producer, with blended cements taking a growing share.

Today the pressure is regulatory as well as commercial. Cement sold in India must carry the BIS certification mark under the Cement Quality Control Order, against standards published by the Bureau of Indian Standards. Plants also fall under the Bureau of Energy Efficiency’s Perform, Achieve and Trade scheme and Pollution Control Board emission norms, so an additive that trims kWh per tonne helps on both counts.

How Do You Choose a Triethanolamine Supplier in India?

Choose a triethanolamine supplier in India who documents every lot, matches grade and packing to your process and keeps deliveries steady through winter. Much of India’s TEA is imported, so the ability to hold stock matters as much as price. Ask for the specification sheet, a recent certificate of analysis and the SDS before the first order.

What Do Buyers Ask About Triethanolamine in Cement?

What is triethanolamine used for in cement?

Triethanolamine is used in cement mainly as the active ingredient in grinding aids. In the mill it adsorbs onto fresh particle surfaces, cutting agglomeration and media coating, so the mill grinds faster or reaches a higher Blaine. After water is added, it speeds the aluminate reaction with gypsum, which supports early strength development. It is usually blended with glycols, TIPA or DEIPA and dosed at a very small fraction of cement weight, set by plant trials.

What is the CAS number of triethanolamine?

The CAS number of triethanolamine is 102-71-6, and it covers TEA sold as trolamine, tris(2-hydroxyethyl)amine or 2,2′,2″-nitrilotriethanol. Its molecular formula is C6H15NO3. The 85% commercial grade is usually a mixture with diethanolamine (CAS 111-42-2), so its SDS may list two registry numbers. Quote CAS 102-71-6 together with the grade on purchase orders so the supplier ships the intended composition.

Is triethanolamine hazardous?

It is a moderate hazard rather than a severe one. Many supplier SDSs classify it as causing serious eye irritation, and repeated skin contact can irritate the skin; classification varies, so follow the SDS that comes with your lot. It is combustible but not highly flammable, and should be kept away from strong acids, oxidisers and nitrosating agents. Wear goggles and gloves, and if exposure occurs, follow the SDS and seek medical attention.

Does a TEA grinding aid affect setting time or 28-day strength?

It can affect both if overdosed. At the right dose, triethanolamine improves early strength with little change to setting, but excess amine can shorten setting or, in some cements, slow alite hydration and reduce later-age strength. The optimum depends on clinker chemistry, gypsum form and the fly ash or slag share, so find it through a plant trial with full IS 4031 testing. Formulators often add TIPA or DEIPA when 28-day strength needs support.

Can I get a sample of triethanolamine before placing a volume order?

Yes. Chelora Amines provides samples for trial before volume orders, so a cement plant or formulator can check the grade in its own laboratory and mill.
